xbeta··on Ghostty 1.0
Great stuff! Does it have a Session/Workspace concept? Maybe we can learn from how Alacritty does it integrating with tmux?
xbeta··on Cantonese Font with Pronunciation
Isn't true that Cantonese has 9 tones?
xbeta··on Facebook’s Bridge to Nowhere
State-wide railway system is definitely something only Fed can help on, I don't think even as big as Meta/Google can do much with them.
xbeta··on My experience with check fraud
What's the Americans obsession with checks? I worked and lived in other countries , including Asia, Europe and Latin America. Most of them moved on to digital payment (especially China) where I found the US and Canada still heavily relied on a piece of paper to process a large amount of funds with no security.

In US, I realized even buying groceries they accept checks written at the counter.

Why can't the US just move on from checks?

xbeta··on Ventura Issues
So what about your company's IT? I am sure they want to push every updates to you as soon as it is released.
xbeta··on Gitea – a painless self-hosted Git service
One of my previous companies use their self-hosted Gitea. That's all good and stuff, but they don't have a dedicated DevOps person, so we actually have to spend extra maintenance on it.

Moreover, we were going through SOC-2 auditing at that time and it is much easier to just store our source code in one of the SaaS option like Github/GitLab/Bitbucket for our auditors to check without having me to screenshot everything for them.

xbeta··on Apache Log4j bug: China’s industry ministry pulls support from Alibaba Cloud
Jiang and Hu both stepped down after 2 terms. So yes they agreed to it.
xbeta··on Apple Daily: Hong Kong pro-democracy paper announces closure
I don't even know why would anyone "dream" or "think" they have a chance to do business with CCP after what happened in what they did to Alibaba, etc.
xbeta··on Apple Daily: Hong Kong pro-democracy paper announces closure
I realize all of their social media accounts disappear as well - FB, Instagram, YouTube, etc. Honestly I feel so bad for their employees and most HK people.
xbeta··on European Super League collapsing as all six English clubs withdraw
I am a football guy. Anyone said we tolerate UEFA/FIFA's corrupted system is because ESL is not any better. ESL lacks of a real relegation/promotion system with other teams, and that's a huge blow to European's traditions of "competitiveness" and "dream" about having a small team going all the way to the top tier competition and even beat them. (Check out the year when Leicester won the English Premier League)

The ESL is simple a closed system, similar to what NBA in US in that there is not relegation/promotion from other lower division leagues, and that means they only play against themselves. Poorly performed team do not need to worry about getting relegated, hence there's really no competition there. And that kills the sporting spirit and the fundamental value behind sports.

Do we believe in UEFA/FIFA? Hell no, but we do believe in football pyramid system and ESL just don't have it. ESL is not the solution to the current problem in European football. It also creates a barrier to not let smaller teams to be part of the competition.

xbeta··on Pro1 X: A Linux smartphone with slideout keyboard
I still think the best keyboard smartphone were my BlackBerries, and I still miss typing on a HW keyboards.
xbeta··on Show HN: Split Keyboards Gallery
I have been looking for a keyboard, but fails to find one. - ergonomics - wireless (bluetooth or a tiny USB dongle is OK) - mechanical keys - mac cmd-key - below $200 USD

I am not sure why it is so difficult to find one like that :-(

xbeta··on How to revert HP printer’s ban on 3rd-party ink cartridges
Slightly off-topic: Any recommendation on a good wifi printer + scanner combo for home office? Works for macOS, Linux and Windows too.
xbeta··on A 40KB Optimization Saved Us 50TB of Bandwidth
I hated it until the day I have to go through every SaaS service vendors that I have and this is the quickest way I can actually "chat" with a real person about some questions. Help desk support tickets took 24hrs turn-around, and emails took even longer.

The problem I think it is harder and harder to reach to "real person" for support and questions these days.

xbeta··on MixedName – Bilingual baby name finder
Yep, absolutely. These constraints probably yield nothing in return. We have take compromise in some of these.
xbeta··on MixedName – Bilingual baby name finder
I did the same with two of my kids, and we have more than two languages to consider. We want something simple to write, spell, and pronounce in all 2 languages + dialects: Cantonese, Mandarin, English.

It is super challenging. And some of my relatives are super into 八字 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Pillars_of_Destiny) that also need to make sure the characters written in Chinese can align with that too.

xbeta··on Ask HN: Can DevOps/Infra/SRE engineers share their startup founding stories?
Would you be OK sharing your startup journey? What makes you want to build this product? How did you meet you cofounders? What are some challenges you have faced compare with regular fullstack/frontend startups?
xbeta··on Android isn't based on Linux. It's based on DangerOS
On a side note, I used to work very closely with Marty at Samsung before his retirement. He is an inspiration for me and I really loved working with him at that time. At that time, lots of ex-Danger folks joined Samsung and later joined Google to work on Android OS.
xbeta··on Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019)
Engineering is always an interesting space that simplistic, lean, great documentation, easily replaceable components and simple UX win.

This sounds like the book The Toyota Way describe.

xbeta··on Building Uber’s Go Monorepo with Bazel
They just had a laid-off recently, and still not profitable given how much $$$ they have burnt over the years. I am not sure if you wanna work there.

FANG such as FB and Google has some big monorepos, and you can try that if you are interested.

xbeta··on Uber lays off 3700 employees via Zoom
I think that makes sense if you assume the manager were not let go. But in a layoff case, they usually chop the entire org, which is as huge as 100+ people.
xbeta··on Startup financial models – Templates compared for SaaS
Casual is awesome! I would like to learn more, Do you guys also hire?
xbeta··on Uber discusses plan to lay off about 20% of employees
It's bound to happen when the business is at a complete halt for a few months. :-(
xbeta··on Facebook is giving $1k to every employee
How about giving out some masks which are more effective than just money? We can't even find any masks to buy in the Bay Area, and we are at risk.
xbeta··on Joplin – a note taking and to-do application with synchronization capabilities
No-Go for me when there isn't mobile support, but once that's there, I am very happy to switch to that.
xbeta··on Uber lays off around 350 more across Eats, self-driving and other departments
The lays off this wave is mostly operations, marketing, and other areas. Not in core engineering.
xbeta··on Uber lays off around 350 more across Eats, self-driving and other departments
They said this is a "final wave"
xbeta··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
I agree with you, but I have to correct myself as well. I mean compare US to other countries where national free health care is available. These are basic human rights which simply ignord by the government in the US.

Workers need benefits which is understandable because they can't even go to doctors when they are sick.

xbeta··on California passes bill that classifies gig economy workers as employees
Workers have no choice but to get W2 status to get health care insurance, retirement compensation, etc.

And they fix it by simply moving them as FT employees, because to the State of California that's the easiest thing they can do. Single-payer free healthcare for all - which is the right thing to do is too much for the State.

This is just how bad the State of California is being run.

xbeta··on I Quit Social Media for a Year
Upvote mad on this. This is exactly what I have been saying to all of my friends who quitted social media. One of aspects was also the narrow view social media creates for bipolarizing spectrum of one's opinions using extremistic news and probably fakes news.
