xbar··on "They had no concept of a duty of care to their users."
Oh my. This set of principles is appropriate for malware.
xbar··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Represence.
xbar··on OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals
Missouri Governor Mike Parson publicly labeled St. Louis Post-Dispatch journalist Josh Renaud a "hacker" for such a "breach." He launched a multi-month criminal investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, threatening criminal and civil prosecution. My take was that such action was idiotic. Renaud was never charged.

AI agents are going to find things that you put on the public Internet without authentication. If you put sensitive things in there, you have created an AI-attractive-nuisance (IMHO/IANAL).

xbar··on An update on Wayback Machine access
Thank you for the Wayback Machine. It is immensely powerful for good.
xbar··on A single firm is behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta hacking scandals
Security-yolo-clowns play with dangerous toys and hurt people. Many used to get sent to jail.
xbar··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
Their solution is to drive demand for domestically-produced oil at ever increasing volumes and prices.
xbar··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
I agree that the idea that some number of teleporting ships scales past the ability to bring enough chaotic asteroids to bear on them seems like a design problem. For me, that was six ships on wave 14. The field is rapidly emptied of threats.
xbar··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
How can OpenAI figure out how to be trustworthy?
xbar··on Thanks to Siri Recaps, your Apple Watch is always listening
Um. Apple?
xbar··on No Man's Sky Cosmos
I am grateful that the devs and their commitment to continuously improving the game have long left those people behind.

The gameplay is completely engaging and this update looks like it fills in even more spaces than were hoped for.

xbar··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
I disagree.

Ready-made UI components and templates have been million-dollar businesses for a lot of companies for a long, long time.

Finding space in a development ecosystem to provide a set of purpose-built tools is a common and healthy software business pattern.

xbar··on .name Termination
I can only assume ICANN was co-opted by Verisign some decades ago.
xbar··on Creating Backup Storage Sucks
I liked the post because it tells a true story about one of the remaining problems that are hard to solve well without a 3rd party.
xbar··on METR Report on OpenAI / Hugging Face Hacking Incident
How did German solar panels end up adapting?
xbar··on Hang on to Your Firefox
Firefox still works fine for me. Sometimes it gets greedy with some activities. I smack it around and it seems to respond. I worry that Mozilla is starving it compared to other activities.
xbar··on 25,000 Lbs. Of Chicken Products Recalled in 5 States: USDA
Time to break up Big Food.
xbar··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
Yup. Samsung & Sonys too. Dumb mode, no internet, Apple TV.

Doesn't solve the malware on Windows PCs installed by LG monitors problem. My only solution to that remains to not buy Lucky Goldstar ever since their 14" 640x480 VGA monitor died inside of warranty but they refused to fix it.

xbar··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Well said. Now I just need a universal way to maintain consistency of my F-keys across all applications, including various browsers.
xbar··on Hilariously Fast Volume Computation with the Divergence Theorem (2018)
What a fun post! My vector calculus is rusty so it was a pleasant little derivation.

I liked getting to the end an find A.R. as the author. It made me appreciate this part of the journey that eventually got us some Asahi Linux graphics.

xbar··on Just the rumour of a bug is enough to find an exploit these days
Hm. I wonder if you can force an exploit into existence with a false rumor of a bug?
xbar··on Taylor Farms: How One Company's Reach Became a National Risk
Time to break up Big Food.
xbar··on Claudette: Make Claude stop talking like a BuzzFeed article
Every time I engage with Claude I am reminded how bad it is at communicating to its human.
xbar··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
The author clearly understood this part of the topic and agrees. There are multiple reasons that software is slow.

As you imply, some of them are not because spending time on optimization seems relatively expensive compared to value. But some of them are.

xbar··on Banksy works cost public almost £150k
The Banksy cost-benefit and clean-protect loops are part of my favorite modern civic dialogs. I like it when the BBC takes the obvious side of the establishment because it is honest.
xbar··on Fast Remediation Is the New Trust Model (JFrog and OpenAI Zero-Day Findings)
No, that is not the new trust model.
xbar··on Judge Rejects Google's Attempt to DMCA Its Way Out of Being Scraped
Hypocrisy-rich.
xbar··on 98.css
Thank you for the library. I was about to ask after 2 of these design spaces.
xbar··on John C. Dvorak has died
He was a thoughtful and insightful writer. I eagerly awaited his PC Magazine article every single week.
xbar··on Recreating the math behind the first stealth aircraft
Thanks. I needed that reminder to sometimes NOT just solve a matrix of 3000 * 3000 equations and merely make an assumption and take an integral, metaphorically.
