xaranke··on Online Dating in the Bay Area, Gender Ratios by City and Age – Match.com
Without context on how this data was gathered it's mostly meaningless.
xaranke··on H-1B: As immigration furor roils Silicon Valley, Canada smooths way for techies
Which is why getting an equally-skilled workforce in the same timezone at a fraction of the cost would be a huge selling point, would it not?

Add to that less friction around growing this workforce by bringing in new talent from abroad and it seems like a slam dunk.

xaranke··on Disappearing videos and disappointed grandmothers
Cookpad?
xaranke··on The Man Who Could Own Aviva France (2015)
Maybe this is a dumb question, but it what stops Aviva from publishing new prices every minute or every second?

> prices for the funds were published each Friday, and clients were allowed to switch funds at those prices anytime before the next price was published, even if markets moved in the meantime.

Publishing prices every Friday just seems like a formality, from what I can gather it isn't written in the contract.

xaranke··on Silicon Valley's Keystone Problem: A Monoculture of Thought
> The cities considered the global "Big Four" fashion capitals of the 21st century are Milan, London, New York and Paris.

It does have fashion, but it's not the biggest by any stretch.

xaranke··on I lived in a Tokyo coworking space
So random to bump into a fellow Terrace House fan on HN.
xaranke··on Silicon Valley's Keystone Problem: A Monoculture of Thought
LA is not a fashion capital: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion_capital.
xaranke··on Show HN: A list of programmers coding live
Looks good, but not a big fan of the autoplaying video.

If I could click a button and start playing the video instead that would be great.

xaranke··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
A Map for Saturday, definitely opened my eyes to spending a gap year traveling the world. Maybe some day.

xaranke··on Is “data scientist” the new “programmer”?
Can you elaborate more on the "algorithms in JS" bit? What libraries/tools are they using? Why JS versus Python or JVM languages?
xaranke··on Companies worry more about access to software developers than capital
Midwest US - Columbus < Minneapolis < Chicago

Southern US - Raleigh < Atlanta = Austin

xaranke··on Why I’m Bullish on the New York Startup Ecosystem
Right, but without an HQ there is no anchor.
xaranke··on Why I’m Bullish on the New York Startup Ecosystem
I don't know if you can have a successful startup ecosystem without anchor BigCo companies that bring people to the area and eventually when these people leave they become VCs/founders/CTOs etc.
xaranke··on Beleaguered Didi Is Said to Lose $585M in Just Six Months
I hate talking on the phone, I'd much rather prefer an app.

The fact that The Oatmeal[1] has a comic on this means that it's more than just me.

xaranke··on Two Years Ago, India Lacked Fast, Cheap Internet – One Billionaire Changed That
That's only part of the story, India greatly benefits from population density in urban areas.
xaranke··on Elastic files for an IPO
The results for ElasticSearch are from 2015, curious to see how relevant they are now especially given that the team has been working on addressing these issues in the interim.
xaranke··on Elastic files for an IPO
Is it just me, or does 33 pages of risk factors seem pretty high?
xaranke··on Google Dataset Search
Placeholder comment to calculate the time before Google inevitably shuts this down.
xaranke··on How to Make a Big Decision
This was great, thanks for sharing!
xaranke··on Ask HN: Why is MacOS so popular among developers?
You can adjust the F-keys in the preferences. That and remapping caps lock to control is something I always do.
xaranke··on Ask HN: Have you ever used PL/pgSQL – the PostgreSQL programming language?
Cool, will take a look. Thanks!
xaranke··on Ask HN: Why is MacOS so popular among developers?
Until recently, MacOS was the only OS with all of the following available natively: a Unix shell, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite. The fact that they made great hardware also helped.

I guess at this point it's just inertia, but if there were a comparable alternative I'd love to move.

xaranke··on Ask HN: Have you ever used PL/pgSQL – the PostgreSQL programming language?
Very cool. Out of curiosity, what would be the best way to get involved in Nominatim?
xaranke··on India Pushes Back Against Tech ‘Colonization’ by Internet Giants
That's not true, anecdotally I know people who did and if you search you can find many more examples.
xaranke··on Why startups are leaving Silicon Valley
You seem to be contradicting yourself: how is growth over 2 decades "explosive"?
xaranke··on Why startups are leaving Silicon Valley
Right, but that's because Microsoft hasn't seen the kind of explosive growth that Amazon has so it's easier to plan. Also they've been around a lot longer.
xaranke··on Ask HN: What do you struggle with?
To piggyback off this comment, my company is always looking for all types of developers. If you're interested my email is in my bio.
