xNeil··on Changing its name tanked X's downloads in App Store and Play Store
App Store rankings most definitely cannot be taken to be a reliable indicator for anything. Max is at No. 3, while Netflix is at No. 29 - this doesn't actually tell you anything, except that Max has more downloads at the moment.

Threads is obviously going to rank high, because the vast majority of Instagram users haven't used it yet - they're going to download it now, and so it's at No. 2. Looking at how badly the platform seems to have tanked from launch, I'm not keeping my hopes up on it being a competitor to X in any meaningful way.

Hard agree. Twitter used to be actively bad for me - the for you page is simply incredible, and dialogue on the platform enriches my life every day I use it. It's the first time in my experience I actually feel like a social network is a net positive to my life. Opening X (Twitter) genuinely gives me joy.
xNeil··on Without belief in a god, but never without belief in a devil
*every successful presidential campaign is a personality cult.
xNeil··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
While owning a jet is a valid point, in his case I'm willing to believe its efficiency related as opposed to some luxury purchase (the time savings are simply insane, that's why Warren Buffett has one - would you call him indulgent?)

> Several supercars in the past Valid point - I remember seeing him crash his McLaren. That was, however, 20 years ago, and have seen no indications of him indulging in any supercars or anything of the sorts in the past 10 years.

>Goes on stage with a famous comedian Seems to be more of an attention-seeking thing as opposed to a luxury lifestyle.

xNeil··on Job Corps: free, residential training and education for low-income young adults
Per my experience, I can't attest to that of cannabis, but the percentage of students drinking alcohol underage is significantly higher than 50% in every college I have heard of or visited.
xNeil··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
I'm sure it is - but sleeping in his friend's mansion is most definitely not indicative of Elon needing money to fund his 'uber-rich' lifestyle.

You haven't refuted my points of him not owning anything indicative of his 'uber-rich' lifestyle, and considering the amount of work he is very visibly doing, I see no reason to somehow assume he's just laying around buying stuff for the heck of it.

xNeil··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
because someone familiar with coding discussion will likely have a basic grasp on logic and maths.

this alone makes them more ‘well read’ than the average X user, especially considering all the conspiracy theories (and groupthink) floating around on the site.

xNeil··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
what uber rich lifestyle? he owns no mansions, no yachts, and i’m not sure he has any super cars. this is a man who sleeps at the office on several occasions.
xNeil··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
can the internet please decide whether SpaceX is an autocracy, or if (as several media outlets put it) Elons companies succeeded in spite of him as opposed to because of him.

both of these cannot be true at the same time.

xNeil··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
i remember i think back when jack dorsey stepped down and parag agrawal was slated to be the next ceo all of HN was doing nothing but talking about how the only viable path for twitter was to put the entire thing behind a subscription because there was too much garbage.

now that elon is actually instating a paywall (that isn’t compulsory, and still lets you use it for free) all of HN seems to be thinking it’s the wrong decision.

i’d understand if something substantially happened in the intervening time period to give you the impression the subscription model was NOT the way to go, but nothing of the sorts has actually happened at all.

while it’s better than most sites, the groupthink on HN is insane.

also - i might be wrong if dorsey stepping down was the time when everyone was saying this, but i do remember it very clearly, and i only joined in 2020.

xNeil··on Jeffrey Epstein Advised Sergey Brin with Tax Shelter
I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone that has networked close to as much (and maybe as well) as Jeffrey Epstein. I mean - it's mind-boggling how many people he knew.
xNeil··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
That's a very valid point! I simply assumed due to the subject matter (coding discussion, in depth tech industry discussions), the average HN reader would be more well read as opposed to your average X user.
xNeil··on Tell HN: t.co is adding a five-second delay to some domains
I came to HN because it seemed to be a place of free dialogue.

> It's certainly under no obligation to promote right-wing propaganda and hate.

It's certainly under no obligation to promote any propaganda or hate. That's what makes the site great. The HN crowd is not your average layman - it's largely well read and educated people. Why not let them decide what is propaganda and what's not (as opposed to some arbitrary authority deciding this)?

xNeil··on Webvan: The dotcom bubble’s biggest bust
Interesting! Think I read an article a while back (we're talking several years here) that said the Dotcom Bubble's biggest bust was a company called theGlobe.com - I think the founder was the grandson of the founder of Nestle or something along those lines.
xNeil··on Akin’s Laws of Spacecraft Design
What's a line of blame?
xNeil··on Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor LK-99 preprint revision 2
All of a sudden it seems the commenters have started name-calling and stereotyping the poster (realjhol) without any evidence or links to dispute his statements. Maybe replying in good faith would be a more helpful discussion, with links to support/deny his arguments?
xNeil··on Space junk: India says object found in Australia is theirs
Not who you were replying to, but thank you - I'm on the floor laughing :)
xNeil··on Mac Mouse Fix
I'd assume they mean the mice that connect to the PC via Bluetooth, but you have to connect a separate (tiny) USB to the PC first in order for the two to connect.
xNeil··on Why is c the symbol for the speed of light? (1997)
I mean, if you go back I'd assume you didn't find the answer. If you close the tab, that's a different thing, and tells me you did, in fact, find what you were looking for.
xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
Thank you very, very much for the link sir! Learnt a whole lot from it.
xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
Again a valid point, but there's an incredible variety of languages Indians speak. But you may be right - Hindi, Tamil and Telugu seem to be extraordinarily popular languages.

Actually, now that I think about it, with the raw number of people speaking every language, you may be exactly right! I've been thinking in terms of percentages (x% of the population speaks y language, so it's probably not language that's the binding factor), but with India's sheer size, just the raw population (that x% might be 300 million people), it doesn't matter!

xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
Why would they want to split up?
xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
A lot of the response in India regarding overpopulation came about during the 1970s, when the Prime Minister's son, worried about overpopulation, started a Compulsory Sterilisation Program, the horrors off which I have heard a lot about.

xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
They do share a common religion though - I think that might be the source for what we call "Indian culture"? Like Islamic culture is a thing, even though Muslims are all over the world and vary widely. In much the same way, I think "Indian culture" (Hindu culture) is recognisable, even if people speak different languages and belong to different races.
xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
While your point is quite interesting (I didn't know Romanis originated from India!), they did emigrate around 1000 CE, or 1000 years ago. I'm not sure whether you can even call them of Indian origin anymore?
xNeil··on India’s diaspora is bigger and more influential than any in history
While that's a very good point, I also wonder about other countries. Indian origin residents have had major impacts in countries throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East as well, to an extent I believe greater than that of the Chinese. I don't think it's just the CCP baggage, there's got to be something more (maybe cultural).
xNeil··on Brave is a fork, not a Chromium reskin
I mean, it's optional. Don't remember what the default is, but you can opt out of their ads.
xNeil··on Google vs. the Open Web
I guess I can see why you feel that way - you intended to say a company that seems strong may be at risk of failing just like any other company (in this case, just because Google seems large does not mean they are not failing) - which is something I (sort of) agree with!

But doesn't it logically follow that the same truth holds for any other 'strong' company, thereby rendering our perception of it (or any other company) worthless? I'm sorry you're disappointed, but I just made a logical continuation, that's all.

xNeil··on Exxon bets carbon will be the new oil
Haha :) I meant in a grammatical sense.
xNeil··on Google vs. the Open Web
While that's a very nice saying, and I appreciate you applying in this context, what you're basically saying is we can never ever assess any organization as strong whatsoever, since every organization that breaks up seems strong at some point.
