wuunderbar··on Honda Monkey Breaks World Record Covering 4,183 Km on Single Tank
Guessed wrong, they definitely found it to be an issue: "After a grueling 304-lap test, Acerbis found they needed to use sponges to combat the sloshing inside the tank at the expense of losing some volume. The final tank weighed 15.2 kg (33.5 lbs) and could hold 108 liters."
wuunderbar··on Ask HN: Good programming streamers / content creators?
The Cherno's C++ guides were absolutely crucial in helping me get up to speed with C++ quickly. And a good reference for things I came across which I did not understand well.

wuunderbar··on Apple to Apple Comparison: M1 Max vs. Intel
There's two components to a Zoom call:

- Encoding: your own camera input.

- Decoding: decoding multiple streams of video.

Your CPU needs to do work on each on these, and depending on what codecs are used (and whether your CPU supports it) hardware acceleration may or may not be supported.

wuunderbar··on Ask HN: Advice about aging parents
> Many elderly people die of loneliness.

How does this work exactly? Medically speaking.

wuunderbar··on Amazon recruiter invites CTO of Azure to apply for SDE II
What's to say this isn't an automated email?
wuunderbar··on Why extraterrestrial life may not seem alien
> Earth lifetime is nothing on the grand scale of things.

Nit: Isn't the estimated age of the universe 14 billion and earth 4.5 billion? I wouldn't call that nothing.

wuunderbar··on macOS Big Sur
Sounds great. Only thing really holding me back is no Safari for Windows. I use Windows for about 20% of my screentime, and I'd like for my browser to be synced across every single device I use.
wuunderbar··on Dropbox Converts to Permanent WFH
> I am super disappointed by some of the comments here that show a total lack of empathy for people who aren't like you.

I've noticed as of late HN has been riddled with comments such as: here is my extremely strong thoughts on X with my personal anecdotal experience Y, and therefore this is how the world should work.

> I believe it will be especially bad for those early in their careers

Agreed. I think it can be equally has bad for someone midway into their career who is thinking about taking on more leadership opportunities.

wuunderbar··on Google says it doesn't monopolize digital ad market – senators don't buy it
And then how do US companies then compete with overseas companies that don’t have this setback?
wuunderbar··on Parents got more time off, then the backlash started
This is just very reflective of hip start-ups. A large amount of tech companies (i.e., more established ones) have standard 15-21 day PTO accrual policies.

I've gotten paid out twice for my PTO and one of them actually happened to be a "hip start-up" who didn't believe in "unlimited PTO".

Do you need to play Witcher 1 & 2?
wuunderbar··on Gmail and Google Drive Outage
> Moral of this story is - always own your mission critical infrastructure.

Sure, if you have the time and money to own it properly. How far do you need to go to say you own it? Multi-regional servers located on properties that you own?

wuunderbar··on Welders set off Beirut blast while securing explosives
> mechanical failure of my car

That's scary. What was the failure if you don't mind me asking?

wuunderbar··on Stanford cancels plans to bring half of undergrads back to campus
> The ones joining frats, partying constantly, playing sports and all that must have trivial classes.

Not true at all. Perhaps they may not end up with the best GPA but they'll do good enough to get a useful degree while having a strong network. It may not have been the healthiest lifestyle for the time being, but they made it out fine.

wuunderbar··on Facebook fired an employee who posted evidence of preferential treatment
Buzzfeed (News) has been doing some decent investigate reporting for a while:

wuunderbar··on Facebook Fired Employee Who Collected Evidence of Potential Political Bias
There's 2 things here to keep in mind to go down your train of logic:

1) The company is actually doing evil things

2) The employee is aware of the purported evil things the company is doing, and agrees with that claim

Now we can debate all we want how evil Facebook is or not, but how many employees do you think check off box 2?

wuunderbar··on Google Music shutdown starts this month, music deleted in December
Why would they care, or firstly how would they know if it's just for personal use?
wuunderbar··on Airbus' self-flying plane just completed taxi, take-off, and landing tests
$250,000 pilot cost per year (including their benefits and training, correct me if I'm too low) 261 working days 1 long-haul flight a day 300 seats in a 777 (disregarding class)

Comes out to ~$7 cost savings for two pilots per flight. Doesn't seem that impressive for a long-haul unless I'm missing something.

wuunderbar··on Google to keep employees home until summer 2021
While I agree with the notion, this is fairly short sighted. There are a lot of TVCs or "non-tech" employees of FAANG for whom free food makes a huge impact on their livelihood in high CoL areas.
wuunderbar··on Pentagon's UFO Unit to Disclose Some of Its Findings to the Public
> The actual footage and pilot accounts are consistent with submarine launched weather balloons, halo artifacts on IRST systems, and similar banal explanations.

Consistent according to whom? And is that already a forgone conclusion?

wuunderbar··on KDE Slimbook: Linux Laptop with Ryzen 4000
> Typing IP addresses + gateways + DNS servers.

What line of work are you in? A cross between hardware and software?

If one is in pure software it seems extremely error-prone to be typing in numbers all the time manually.

wuunderbar··on What if aviation doesn’t recover?
You may be technically right in a couple aspects but in the context of the real world this notion is ridiculous. Tell me of another method of transport that moves you around in a timely manner, particularly over oceans.
wuunderbar··on YouTube deleted an electronics repair channel [video]
> don't rely on the cloud as the only copy of your data

The real moral: don't think of YouTube (a public video discovery platform) as a cloud backup tool. They don't pretend to be and you shouldn't think of it as so.

wuunderbar··on TikTok app to stop accessing user clipboards after being caught in the act
Can someone answer why iOS even allows the ability to read the clipboard buffer in the first place? Just seems like poor privacy and security design.
wuunderbar··on Google Acquires North
Think the watches are primarily suppose to be used on the go. Like working out, walking around town or glancing at while driving.

Not sitting at a desk with a Mountain Dew in one hand and your mouse in the other. Synced desktop notification or smartphone on a stand seems like a better option for that.

wuunderbar··on Apple and Facebook
I think they care, but they don't necessarily equate using Apple over Google as to be being more secure and private (the premise in this thread).

They likely see both as secure enough.

wuunderbar··on The End of OS X
I may be missing something here, but why would you need to change the stock installed tools in /usr/bin? Seems like an easy way to screw up your OS installation. And it's not like a VM where you can rollback to a snapshot or relaunch.

If there really was an issue there then you either need to file a bug and have them mainline a fix, or yes hack/shim a fix on top for your needs. Perhaps leveraging PATH precedence.

wuunderbar··on Show HN: Learn Regular Expressions with simple, interactive exercises
Agreed. Went through it twice and that combined with a bit of real-world practice made me pretty proficient at RegEx.

Fantastic site.

wuunderbar··on After 10 years in tech isolation, I’m now outsider to things I once had mastered
Fair points.

For me it was just interesting to read about his views about himself (implicitly) and how he observed everything happening in the last decade. It's quite a unique and informative perspective as a sort of culture piece.
