Red Flag Laws = Gun Confiscation Orders. Just because they aren't using the most accurate terms doesn't mean I am editorializing the article. Look at their implementation in the states.

All of these laws have the same ends, gun confiscation before due process. Maybe the due process takes place in a week, maybe it takes place in a year, in any case, these are gun confiscation orders with no conviction of a crime and in many cases, no evidence that a crime has even occurred.

Red Flag Laws = Gun Confiscation Orders.

Those are my feelings too.. I understand how the public can be swayed by inaccurate media representations, but it's Y Combinator which seems to portray itself as a source of intelligent people.

I agree with what you're saying, but I don't think the "liberal mentality" is a problem.

Plenty of liberals realize they are actually pro-gun if you just sit them down and explain the restrictions which are already in place. The democratic party has been hijacked by Bloomberg dollars through Everytown, which is why the candidates all went way further left of the overton window.

At the end of the day, people believe in self-preservation, but they've been misguided by the media to believe that gun laws are something they are not. Basic facts can cut through their lies, the hard part is promoting that message without billionaire funding.

The Onion is typically an unreliable source, why not listen to 538 writers who did the research?

'I used to think gun control was the answer. My research told me otherwise.[1]'

You're right, he said the ice caps would be gone by 2014 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsioIw4bvzI). How are they looking?

The problem is that people hold vaccines and "herd immunity" so dearly to themselves that they're afraid to accept that they have side effects just like any other medication. Gardasil (HPV Vaccine) for example is responsible for a slew of well-documented side effects (paralysis, GBS, etc) causing countries like Japan to stop recommending them. Add in it's inefficiencies at actually vaccinating against HPV and that the big risk of catching HPV is through an elective behavior and it's clear it shouldn't be mandatory.

Individual vaccines can be argued against their own merits, but unfortunately as you say the "Overton Window" is rife with people who are swallowing down opioids like candy and believe anything that comes in the form of a pharmaceutical is gold. The reality is most medications have extensive side effects, and vaccines are no exception. Unfortunately nobody can have an honest conversation on which ones are worth it and which ones aren't because of the uneducated stigma associated with the average anti-vax beliefs.

I'd cater that the same thing is the case with climate change. I read some comments today from people who unironically believe that humanity will be wiped out within 12 years. Al Gore said that 20 years ago and here we still are.

I'd advise people to be more open minded and try and convert the anti-vaxxers to the correct side. Of course you can admit that measles isn't so bad of a disease while still promoting it's vaccines, and surely that will garner more support than advocating strapping anti-vaxxers to a table and shoving a needle in their arm.

wowzap··on Amazon Pulls Books That Promote Unscientific Autism ‘Cures’
You can do that if you want, "fire in a movie theater" was an argument in an overturned Supreme Court ruling.
wowzap··on Reddit is raising a huge round near a $3B valuation
Seriously? I just assume most people on there are in high school, it seems like a place where the lowest common denominator ideas get upvoted and everything else gets nailed.
wowzap··on Innocent New York man billed $4,600 for police rectal probe
I went to Syracuse University and the police force there are a joke. They're your average overpaid, overworked hillbillies who will smoke a cigar in your face while issuing you a ticket and send everything less than a SWAT team to break up a house party.
wowzap··on Amazon driver arrested after taking GPS 'bait' package off Washington Co. porch
I hope railroading this guy assures that none of my amazon packages are ever stolen in this kind of scheme again. I don't feel bad for him whatsoever. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
wowzap··on Walt Mossberg Quits Facebook
Um. Yes? What has this guy done in the past 5 years? All the linked commenters saying how great his work is posted 10 year old videos of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

Maybe the better question is, is Walt Mossberg still relevant to the technology scene?

wowzap··on Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rise Like a ‘Speeding Freight Train’ in 2018
Reducing carbon emissions sounds good until you consider that you could actually just save up some money, move somewhere away from the shore, and live out the rest of your life.

What incentives are the carbon-reducing crowds providing for the common man? Are they going to finally get it together and build affordable housing in our coastal cities? Are they going to let us park electric vehicles or do we have to ride the bike? Can we still use cash or does every business have to be cash free? Are they going to assure that my water is safe to drink or just ban plastic water bottles and let me die? Can we be responsible for our own safety or do we have to live in a police state?

There is there no semblance of choice on the opposing side. It's all or nothing "REDUCE WASTEFUL BEHAVIORS NOW" (but look the other way as we allow business to do whatever they like). Who would ever submit to that? I'd rather plan my contingency now than become a slave to whatever future the bureaucrats decide for us.

You should do some reading on pre-public education America, there actually wasn't much demand for it and private education served communities very well.

Be careful - in some states like New York this can cost you the ability to ever purchase a gun and be able to defend your life.
wowzap··on Facebook Betrayed America
Books are incredibly powerful mind viruses and we have done a really great job of weaponizing them over the past thousand years.

Yes, soy destroys almost all sexual organ/sexual development facets of the human experience. Just last week they found that women who were fed soy formula when they were babies have a higher risk of experiencing bad cramps during their period.
wowzap··on Hackers targeting election networks across country prior to midterms
Guessing or using social engineering to get into a Campaign manager's email account is easier than executing a hack across hundreds of counties in a different country.

Palin's email account was hacked in 2008... do we think that election was hacked as well?

wowzap··on NY Man Arrested for Cutting Wires to Red Light Cameras (2016)
Do you have a link to General Malcolm Stewart's argument? I'd like to read up on it to learn more about this perspective.
wowzap··on NY Man Arrested for Cutting Wires to Red Light Cameras (2016)
Somebody actually ran on this ticket a few years back and lost - their campaign signs said something along the lines of "RED LIGHT CAMERAS ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL". The revenue question is more a matter of ideology. You could always tell them that before the sixteenth amendment the only revenue our government needed came from excise taxes and tariffs... it's not like there's no precedent for funding a country without red-light cameras, or income tax for that matter.
wowzap··on NY Man Arrested for Cutting Wires to Red Light Cameras (2016)
Oh Christ. Why is Citizen's United bad? All it says is you can make a political film leading up to an election and the production of that film shouldn't count as a campaign contribution. It's a perfect example of freedom of speech.
wowzap··on NY Man Arrested for Cutting Wires to Red Light Cameras (2016)
Yes I know - I grew up in Suffolk County. The people continue voting for politicians that allow these initiatives to occur. It's a feel good solution because at least some people believe the traffic light cameras solve the problem of car accidents at red lights. If they were educated everybody would know about the study that said that auto incidents increase and take it into account at the polls. But unfortunately they do not educate themselves on these issues and vote accordingly to fire the people responsible, instead they almost always just vote party-line no matter who is on the ballot and what they stand for.
wowzap··on NY Man Arrested for Cutting Wires to Red Light Cameras (2016)
I don't think this is a good example of government corruption. It's just a population stunned by lack of education trying a feel-good solution to a problem that works against their best interests. It's the same as most laws in our society - gun control, marijuana prohibition, the list goes on and on.
wowzap··on My Parents Give Me $28k a Year
It's a beautiful quote and sentiment. But seriously, how unrealistic is that? The bad guys are still going to be here three generations from now and the world is still going to need people with hard skills.
wowzap··on Waking up early serves capitalism
I find this article bizarre. I wake up at 5AM so that I can juggle personal goals - fitness, hobbies, etc with my workday which goes from ~10-5. I typically can work out in the morning, beat my coworkers to work (start work at 7:30, they get in at 10), wrap whatever I had to for the day before my 10AM meeting, spend time during working hours exercising more, playing piano, or flying drones, then do a bit more work, cook AND STILL be in bed by 9:30PM to support my sleep.

Yes, many early risers who are "cultish" are total dorks that are sleep-depriving themselves and evangelize their wakeup time to appear "elite", but if I miss sleep I know it immediately - I feel mentally drunk all day and get mood swings, make simple mistakes, forget things, and oversimplify tasks. As such, I try to be in bed by 9/9:30 to get ~7 hours of sleep which still irritates my tension headaches, increases my workday stress and comes with a whole slew of compromises.

Regardless, I wouldn't trade my rising early lifestyle for the alternative - oversleeping (11->8), getting into work at 10, feeling tired all day, getting 30% as much done, no hobbies, no exercise... no thank you.

wowzap··on Two in Three Americans Now Support Legalizing Marijuana
1. Drinking in public in California is a $100 fine, smoking marijuana in public is $250.

2. Probable cause - "our drug dog is trained to detect over 30 grams of Marijuana.", "I smelled marijuana and suspected an open container, asked to see the open container to verify it was legal, open container held over 30 grams."

3.You're right about alcohol... fun fact - it's still federally illegal to distill spirits.

wowzap··on Two in Three Americans Now Support Legalizing Marijuana
I just hope we don't end up like California and keep hundreds in fines for smoking in public, open containers in cars, having more than 30 grams, etc. People should be allowed to possess any amount they want, grow as many plants as they want, etc. What's the point of legalization if a police officer can still stop you and search to make sure you have under 30 grams? What's the point of legalization if smoking weed still prevents you from buying a gun or holding down a federal job?

I like Larry Sharpe's viewpoint here - Marijuana should be regulated like onions.
