worik··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
Yes, mostly true

But there is still journalism.

* Propublica

* The Economist

* The Guardian

* 404 Media

Life is much harder for journalist now, and joining g the "darkside" of PR is the best/lucrative career path, but it exists

worik··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
When? Where?
worik··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
Yes, it is a tool.

"Normal"?

It will cause huge disruption on its way to increasing efficiency, and if we maintain our freedoms, increasing welfare.

But:

AI cannot do your job

Your boss bought AI to do your job

You're fired

How long is it we had private bedrooms?

Not that long ago we would all have been very used to watching people have sex.

worik··on The Potomac River Midair Collision
I have just finished chapter 2.

About congress overriding safety concerns for their personal convenience

Air traffic controllers' concerns were shutdown by the FAA because of "politics"

I am gobsmacked. Where was the air traffic controllers' union? They could have used industrial action to address the unsafe conditions

I am yet to finish the document. I am expecting to see the ATCs and the pilots blamed by the authorities, I hope not.

> Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

An economist....

worik··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
> so I’m a bit odd I guess

No. You, and I, are sensible....

worik··on Dubious research tied to Red Bull has shaped energy drink policy
I drink black coffee, no sugar

I'm not "going nuts" over energy drinks, but the key ingredient is not caffeine, it is sugar

The evidence has been mounting for decades, sugary drinks are devastating public health

worik··on Big Food vs. the People
This report is about something completely different
worik··on Big Food vs. the People
Good on them. More civilised than their northern neighbors
worik··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
Totally depends on what you define money as.

If "money" is the some function of all outstanding credit, then yes, it is created (mostly) by bank lending

If you define money as a web of trust then it is mostly created by those that create the rules. The state

worik··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
> The airline industry since its birth has had a collective net loss

True. But it has added enormous benefits to many other parts of the economy.

Airlines do not capture that value.

That is where the AI companies are. Adding value they cannot capture

worik··on The AI trade now runs on borrowed money, and the lenders are repricing it
> As a retail investor, you should buy an index fund and then forget about it.

That definitely was true.

I am unsure it is still true. Index funds have taken so much of the trade volume the are becoming momentum strategies

So long as you are happy following the market wherever it goes, and if the recent past is a guide then up is the direction, then yes.

But given the nepotism and corruption in the highest reaches of USAnian society (e.g. Trump's crypto currency scams and the blatant inside dealing and rule ignoring of the Space X float) the future looks much less certain than the past

worik··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
> unprecedented amounts of corruption...

Yes I hear about that a lot. Yuk

But I also hear that FIFA puts a lot of resources into developing the game in African countries.

I am asking: Is that true in your experience?

> To be fair, everything is Chinese made

Yes. Chinese manufacturing is quite a phenomenon, useful and everywhere

But to be completely fair, a $40 video projector has a warning label. The price

> If it is legal for a human to learn from a book...

True, if the human's access to the book was legal

A great deal of training was on the open web, no one should complain.

But at least Meta and Anthropic were caught red handed taking copyrighted works, illegally, for training

I think international IP laws are too strick and onerous, but they were broken to train these models

The "Tech Bros" have shown such a lack of moral fiber and ethics the burden of proof is on you

> Systems that rely on good people to work...

...are the only systems that are available for free, democratic societies (like what I want to live in) to function

worik··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
Open AI and Anthropic are in a battle of "scary press release"

The warriors are PR people.

They are desperate to generate as much fear as possible so AI is heavily regulated, so they are protected, from Chinese competition

What a sad state for very cleaver people

worik··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Capitalism, hoisted on its own petard

So determined to own the means of production, enormous amounts of money have been poured into building the frontier models

But there is not much special, except for capital density, about those very models

Surely these models should be treated as public utilities? Like power stations or water infrastructure. Absolutely necessary for a modern economy, but indistinguishable from one another

Pass the popcorn

worik··on LEDs’ potential to save our night skies
We have been working hard on this in New Zealand, in the South Island

We started in Tekapo (https://www.darkskyproject.co.nz/) which being rural with a very low population density, and mountainous and with existing observatories to protect

In recent years the effort has moved into the cities (https://www.dunedin.govt.nz/council/policies,-plans-and-stra...)

Interestingly people who live on hills, overlooking the suburbs, complain the lovely view of the sparkling streets was going dark!

But not only does it preserve the stars it is much cheaper, so not going back

Point is: this can be done and the nighttime rewards and financial rewards make it worthwhile

> The term neoliberalism has no meaning, it's purely used in a pejorative way by leftists.

Wrong

It is used pejorativly but that does not make it devoid of meaning

It refers to the social policies instituted in the 1980s that (attempted to) inserted competition into every facet of human relationships

It was instituted by liberals

It was new (and a dreadful policy that has lead to the discrediting of liberalism generally)

Hence "neo-liberal

You are welcome

worik··on Is this the end of the once-mighty GoPro?
> China wants to deindustrialize non-Chinese industries for strategic and/or natsec reasons,

No. Not even close

China wants its place at the table.

With Erope and USA

People seem to think a developed China is a threat. But they are not staying in rural poverty for ever for our sake. That is not a threat.

They are not trying to "deindustrialise" anybody, just finding a place amongst equals

Yes. It is useful for the scam artists:
