worik··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
Yes

And the statements of the "doomers" tells us a lot about them, and nothing about the technology

worik··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
On the face of it this is establishment forces looking after each other to hold back data they fear could have value when it should be in the (French) public domain

But, we are hearing from one side, one perspective. The museum has not had a fair expression of their side here.

Court proceedings can look unfairly bizarre when unfairly reported. I am not saying this report is definitely unfair, but it is impossible to tell

worik··on Anthropic IPO prospectus lays bare deep dependence on Big Tech partners
I do not understand how this continues. It seems the top end or USAnian business has become dominated by optimists that have lost touch with reality

There is not enough money in the world for three trillion dollar AI companies, AFAICT

Then there are the principles claiming that there is a "10% chance" of their products causing human extinction, and continuing in business. Either they are liars, or they have obscenely little human decency

What strange times we are living through

worik··on Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video]
Yes, true enough.

But there is a "dead middle".

If you have a big cash flow to go with "...lots of users and [rising] hosting costs" then, yes, you're spot on

But if there is insufficient cash flow then costs are rising and you are a bit stuck.

worik··on Goodbye Google
You are missing the point of religion.

It is not about objectivity or belief.

It is about being.

worik··on Goodbye Google
Someone says that they believe there is a 0.1 probability of their worsening human life in a decade

Then they say they are going to keep doing it...

Forgive me for alerting you: they are liars

worik··on Goodbye Google
I recall when Google was the exciting bleeding edge frontier

Then came so much money, and by being chaotic evil even more money..

Still makes me sad. I was so sweetly naive

worik··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
How is this a good idea? How can they cool it, in a vacuum?
worik··on Programming Tutorials Are Dead
I looked one up yesterday. For Pure Data.

LLMs hopeless in that domain I have found

worik··on Why is Hacker News like that?
Ask Brittons, and Germans, about Elon interference

Supporting far right parties, stone cold racists and bigots. Spreading lies frankly and openly, doing his best to undermine the democracies

He does not live there, has no right to be involved in their politics. Interfering for sadistic fun, it seems

The damage he did (in a ketamine haze it seems) to federal programmes with such astounding carelessness...

It is no wonder that he has such a negative following. He is a genuinely bad person, and being so rich, powerful and hungtry for more he is news worthy

worik··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
> Switch to android which has even more ads?

I use Android

No ads.

I feel left out, thank Dog for that!

worik··on I said no and Apple said yes
What's a "carburetor"?
worik··on I said no and Apple said yes
Get it working

Keep it working

Forget about it

That is me on Debian.

worik··on Meta bans ads for Virginia Woolf play in Spain
> Well you can also just stop using these products

True. But there is a social cost, for now

In my neighborhood Facebook became the defacto "town square" where community organising happens. A bad idea in hindsight, but there it is

I nolonger use Facebook. Not my choice, my account disappeared and I decided not to reconstitute it, and now I pay the price

But the price gets less as time goes by as Meta killed the goose that lays the golden eggs. Their greed and carelessness is making the service less valuable or useful

This (ban Virgina Wolf FFS) is another example. If you cannot advertise what you are doing as part of your community, then what is the point?

Why be part of a service that no longer links people without fear or favour (Facebook of fifteen years ago) but solely exists to market at you?

worik··on Stallman: Thousands Dead, Millions Deprived of Liberties (2001)
> but his views are not precise or correct in this matter.

The views he expressed re sexual assault were abhorrent

I have huge respect for RMS. Being this wrong once shows the bad way (we) men of a certain age were raised. The idea that sexual assault must involve violence or the threat of violence is old, out of date, and at one point RMS held it along with society at large

Times change, and as we get older we need to change with them.

worik··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
> If you're going to make apps in windows

...your troubles are starting

worik··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
> Are win32 APIs proprietary?

Yes. And crap. Not in my code bases.

worik··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
I disagree.

If your solution is revolution you misunderstood the problem, and you'll make it worse

We still have vestiges of democratic institutions we can use to constrain and controll the state.

The blood letting, pain and suffering you are calling for is much worse than the private power's attack on privacy, and destroys the one effective tool (what remains of your Republic) that you have to fight them

Instead of fighting to destroy your republic, struggle to protect and restore it

worik··on I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea
Read a book.

Wrote a blog

Got nothing to say

worik··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
Indeed.

I was a wuss and waited for a CD. I doged the 98 floppy install....

worik··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
I have had these problems on Windows too.

Computers are complex and there are always trade offs

worik··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
I switched to Linux in 1993. Never looked back
worik··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
> X is the public square

> They are right to charge for the API

I might just leave that there...

worik··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
> It's not one person, one vote, so it's not democracy

Voting is a democratic instrument, but a blunt one and not the most important.

"...those who spend five minutes voting every three years and call it democracy..."

Majoritarianism is undemocratic in that any desire less than 50% + 1 is deprecated.

If you care IMO the most important feature of a democracy is rule of law and access to the courts.

worik··on The contagion of fear
This was like the Good Times virus, bck in the day
worik··on The contagion of fear
> The clear and predictable power of AI is the evidence for existential risk

* The "predictable power of AI" is very advanced predictive text. What a lot you can do with that, and there are clear limits.

* AI has no intent. The greedheads who find themselves in these positions of power have clear intent (often but not always bordering on and actively becoming misanthropic) put their intentions on AI - hence to doom mongering

* Who will starve with the failure of agriculture? A few, a lot, but not everybody. We are good at this - have been doing it a lot longer than computing or science

worik··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
> I was watching YouTube through their Apple TV app.

That is an active choice, not forced in any way.

> The YouTube creators that make the content do need to get paid.

There are better ways, and we would all be better off except for the small group of greedheads benefiting from the chaos

The ad supported internet is dying. Good riddance

worik··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
> When Google broke the original uBlock origin and made people switch to uBlock Lite

Not me.

Is that because I stuck with Firefox?
