woogiewonka··on Things cryptocurrency enthusiasts probably won't tell you
Transferwise is pretty friendly and uses real exchange rate + reasonable fees Usually around 1% or less. With Bitcoin, I can send the same transfer for 0.03% - which puts Transferwise to shame and makes PayPal look like an absurd joke. Granted there's much more involved with current volatility of bitcoin but once that gets more stable all of the other options will be a total joke. People who cant't understand the future of bitcoin as remittence are in for a rude awakening.

Thanks for making jobs like mine even more relevant. When design turns into commodity that's based on zero data, user feedback or user analysis - my job just gets easier and easier.
woogiewonka··on North Korea Hackers Step Up Bitcoin Attacks
What a load of horseshit. From the referenced report:

"In 2016 we began observing actors we believe to be North Korean" - key phrase "we believe".

"Now, we may be witnessing a second wave of this campaign" - "may be".

The whole article is just fishing for connections with zero ties to anything solid. Even if they did connect two dots, we can now claim that a few people doing something is the entire North Korean regime? Pppplease.

TransUnion charges $5 to put a security freeze on the account. I cannot believe they are able to get away with this. How does this logic even work?

1. We'll collect all kinds of data on you without you knowing it. 2. Ooops, we've been hacked! 3. Pay us to freeze your account.

How .. what... in what world does this make any sense? How do we go about changing this nonsense?

Business as usual, and you know it.
woogiewonka··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
C'mon we live in the real world here. What makes you think Equifax will be put out of business? I agree, the scumbags should be put down like a suffering animal but that will never happen.
woogiewonka··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
I would not trust USPS with anything. I came by to pick up my mail and they gave me someone else's mail - a stack of 40 some letters / documents - all sorts of sensitive stuff that I could in theory open up and steal that person's identity.

Please, think before you say USPS... this agency is broken as hell. The last thing we want to do is trust our identities to them.

Has anyone notified them of this bafoonery?
woogiewonka··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack
How do we get in on this lawsuit? What are the implications of this hack to an average person and what if anything should they do about it?

woogiewonka··on I make $10k per month with the Amazon Affiliate Program
Sorry to hear. Unfortunately in the affiliate world once you get big they tend to fuck you over. Knew a guy who was making 50k per day on an affiliate network, they shut his ass down fast and kept all the money. It's best to create your own marketplace where you are in charge - this is what I'm currently working on.

I see. I am not in the same field so some of what I say may not apply but as a designer I'm always looking to partner with people who can create websites to specs. Maybe other developers can chime in but I can give a few tips that have worked well for me:

-if you don't have any current leads, ask around. Colleagues, family, friends, people you know. Just get the word out so next time a relevant topic comes up in a conversation you're the first on their mind. Also get a profile on freelancing sites. - Don't compete on price. Offer solutions not services. - Make a portfolio of your projects, even personal ones and talk about your role in those projects, goals, outcomes etc. - listen to freelancers podcasts - art of value is a good one. - get to know people in complementary fields like designers. Your source of leads could be from a business, an agency or a designer.. even copy writers. - start on a paid gig. Personal projects are alright but developers need paid gigs in their portfolios. - start now, somewhere, anywhere. Some people never start.

If you are beyond these tips already, great. If not, wish you the best of luck!

I'm 31. I couldn't find any work so I went out freelancing. I am a UX UI designer and started on Upwork. It's not a good long term solution in terms of projects but I believe it's a great place to start. What worked for me was not to compete on price. I priced myself above most freelancers and it seemed to work. Now more and more of my business is coming from referrals but I still get good projects from Upwork. I turn down about 90% of requests on there. It starts off a bit slow but snowball quickly. I say all of this without knowing your industry but I'm sure the same principles can be applied to any type of work, may just need to look for other avenues of initial leads.

Sorry to hear freelancing is not working well for you. What's your line of work?
woogiewonka··on Job applicants over 40 filtered out by employers
Have you tried freelancing? Not sure what it is you did before but could be worth a shot? I'm making now more than I ever had being employed and don't have to answer to anyone but myself.
woogiewonka··on Job applicants over 40 filtered out by employers
31 here. Couldn't find work for 6 mo despite being well qualified for positions I applied for. My guess: too many applicants for the same position. Ended up going the freelancer route, couldn't be happier now. Sorry, I know this doesn't relate to age (I don't think) but just wanted to say that.

I'm sure it wasn't the direct result of job loss but the events that escalated after the fact. Any married person knows the stress job loss has on a relationship after extended periods of unemployment.

woogiewonka··on How Much Would You Put Up with to Avoid United Airlines?
Totally agree and would act the same. I think all airlines are on their best behavior at this point. I hate to say this, but I've used this incident when dealing with other corporate bullies lately and it seemed to be helping. I.e. I got my way very quickly hehehe.
woogiewonka··on How Uber uses interaction design to manipulate its drivers
I'm quit tired of all the Uber bashing going on. "Psychological tricks" - really? A company is trying to make sure there are drivers available during busy times and even helps them know where those areas are but this this article reads like yet another hit piece on Uber. Last I checked we can still vote with our actions. Don't like the way Uber is treating you as a driver? Don't drive for Uber. People who complain about Uber yet use it for income are the precise reason "unfair" practices can continue thriving. You can't really blame the CEO for wanting to make a profitable business, even if it means gamifying the platform to get more out of drivers. What's next, are we going to get angry at e-commerce shops for suggesting we spend 10.01 more to get free shipping? C'mon...
