wondringaloud··on What's it like to get a “?” email from Jeff Bezos? [video]
You spell out your question like a human being, to treat the other human being with respect.

Be less concerned with internet points.
wondringaloud··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
This might be the dumbest comment I've ever seen on HN, and that's saying something.
wondringaloud··on Formula 1 2020: The secret aerodynamicist – are capes the key?
I suppose you thought that chess only got interesting when Deep Blue was put up against Gary Kasparov?
wondringaloud··on A Renaissance painting reveals how breeding changed watermelons (2015)
The article basically debunks itself with the correction at the end, but tries to hang on by claiming "Look! It has seeds!"

However, I don't see one mention of "artistic license" as a plausible explanation of why it may have seeds, or why it may be depicted as being more ripe.

wondringaloud··on Ask HN: How are you holding up?
Fantastic!
wondringaloud··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
Who is reading content while scrolling? That's like buying a $10,000 stabilization unit to be able to read a book while jogging.
wondringaloud··on Time to Upgrade Your Monitor
It was at this point I realized the entire premise of the article was a very long-winded way of saying "I like using high DPI monitors when I code". And then tossing in a bunch of technical details to make it sound like a "fact".
wondringaloud··on Woodworking for Engineers
Put another way:

Hey <programmer>, I just bought a new laptop. Which IDE should I install on it first?

You've accepted your lapse, but you don't seem to accept any further responsibility to stop this from happening in the future. Instead, you're putting this responsibility on countless websites that YOU think are inappropriate for your daughter. The burden is on you. Own it.
wondringaloud··on Can 1/3 and 1/3 = 2/6? It seemed so
I think this is a perfect example of why people find math hard. Not because there's something inherently difficult, but because we have teachers like this one in charge of open and curious minds at a young age. You get a teacher who doesn't quite understand what it is she's trying to teach, and this confusion is multiplied over and over again for each batch of students that pass through. Not too long afterwards you get kids who think they don't understand math, when in fact it was a failing of the teachers who couldn't correctly explain it in the first place.
wondringaloud··on Arduino Pinball Machine That Plays Itself
Why did they build the entire pinball machine themselves? The portion that "plays itself" is a camera attached to some very basic computer vision techniques that boil down to:

When ball detected in flipper area, flip.

You could attach this to any commercial machine by connecting a relay where the flipper buttons would be.

I don't see how your anecdote differentiates between these two scenarios:

1. Human leaves, cat gets separation anxiety due to feeling less emotionally secure

2. Human leaves, cat gets separation anxiety because their primary source of food is missing

I don't think it's unreasonable to be surprised that a teenager (at least, an American teenager) isn't aware of such a thing. They've managed to get through school without once being shown a photo of the space shuttle? Not one blurb? Never seen it in a TV commercial? Photograph?

wondringaloud··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
This is fantastic. I've had a very similar idea kicking around in my head for a very long time.

These days it seems impossible to make sense of all the predictions from so-called experts. Tracking the accuracy of the talking heads is a great place to start measuring just how valuable their information is.

wondringaloud··on Old box, dumb code, few thousand connections, no big deal
She developed a prototype based on a hunch and a whim. Great work, no doubt, but engineering isn't based on intuition and some experience. Real engineering has a goal or specification in mind, and then proves through modeling, analysis, and _finally_ testing that it meets those specs.

Whipping something up and then seeing what it's capable of doesn't qualify.

wondringaloud··on Old box, dumb code, few thousand connections, no big deal
I'm glad someone else sees this the way I do. What the blog writer did was tinker with something. They didn't engineer it.

I was a mechanical engineer prior to switching to software. As a general rule, the things we do in software are very distant from engineering.

wondringaloud··on Career advice for people with bad luck
This is absolutely true. I've noticed most "unsuccessful" people go around with a view of "successful" people that they got lucky, never had to endure hardship, had something handed to them, and so on. It's a defeatist, whiny attitude.

I've put "un/successful" in quotes because I'm referring to the common interpretation of success/failure being purely financial. There are many other ways to lead an "unsuccessful" but fulfilling life, and I'd argue the place to start is to accept the hand you've been dealt. And to work with it rather than rail against it.

wondringaloud··on Renaming files with mv without typing the name two times
I've been asking myself that question more and more. It seems HN has been slowly becoming a Reddit-lite. There are significantly more low-quality "thanks! this is great!" comments and "witty" one-liners everywhere.

Not to mention posts like these.
