wolpoli··on Best Buy Geek Squad employees report mass layoffs
Just realized that Pixel 8 does have display out. So Google is now embracing the future.
wolpoli··on Don't require people to change 'source code' to configure your programs
I am not sure if allowing users to override default by editing/adding to a completely empty file is a good solution either. It's rather error prone and easy to, for example, accidentally type field name incorrectly.

Both Apple and Google are resisting that future. Samsung seems to the only one embracing it.
wolpoli··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
If you deceive people that that demands truth, do you become rich and become enemies?
wolpoli··on NotepadNext – a cross-platform reimplementation of Notepad++
I just tried it and was surprised that it doesn't offer Right-Click option to customize/turn off the toolbar. There was a period in Windows software when that level of customizability was expected.
wolpoli··on ZenHammer: Rowhammer attacks on AMD Zen-based platforms
If that's the case, then I guess they would take physical server offline. And if other machines started showing similar signs of failure, then they would analyze the logs for possible row hammer attack?
wolpoli··on Is GPT-4 a good data analyst? (2023)
Would the final product be similar to Github copilot, but for prompt?
wolpoli··on ZenHammer: Rowhammer attacks on AMD Zen-based platforms
> The attacker will need to cause dozens of machine halts in order to achieve even a single exploitable bitflip. Dozens of machine halts is not something that goes undetected.

Is there a process for the operations team managing the system to figure out that it was an attack and not just flaky hardware?

wolpoli··on Why the 2% inflation target? (2023)
For me, it comes from the confidence that while I don't know the outcomes, I do have the ability to handle any of the possible outcome.
wolpoli··on What is a pig butchering scam? (2023)
> I have legal financial control over mom's estate

A note to anyone in Canada reading this: This would be considered a bare trust and it would have to be declared to the CRA, starting this year.

wolpoli··on Indonesia's e-bike shops are building their own batteries
Do trained dentists perform their own dentistry?
wolpoli··on YouTube now requires to label their realistic-looking videos made using AI
Yes, AI could have been used anywhere in the production pipeline: AI could be in the script, could be used in the stock photo or video, and more.
wolpoli··on How web bloat impacts users with slow devices
It'll give a nicer experience and will eliminate situation where an element changes location just as you try to tap on it.

The extension just needs to handle GDPR notice and Email subscription overlays.

wolpoli··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
Apple is going to have a hard explaining if the regulator asks why it costs €0.50 per first annual install when it's free on Android.
wolpoli··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
> Purpose-built rentals

Purpose-built rentals are purchased by big pension funds and other investors.

> Also, the need for rentals and rent prices in general would go down if most of the new builds weren't scooped up by investors and people could actually buy homes to live in.

Are you saying there will be more supply of home built per year if higher % of rental is built? If so, then logically, it will tend to lead to lower rent and lower home price, but I was under the impression that the industry cannot build any faster than it is now and that changing the mix does not help.

wolpoli··on My favourite animation trick: exponential smoothing (2023)
If you have a diffuse light source, let's say 8dp, directly above the component and the component is also 8dp above the background, then it'll look right for one component.

To account for the lack of parallex effect in the shadow when there are multiple components, you will then need a telephoto lens zoomed through the light source from a huge distance. I think we'll need a ring light.

wolpoli··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
Where do housing in the rental market come from if they aren't purchased and rented out by investors? No level of the government in Canada is building anything more than a token number of housing, and those that are built aren't added to the general rental pool.
wolpoli··on My favourite animation trick: exponential smoothing (2023)
The shadow is around flat piece of paper of zero height, levitating off the background, casting shadow 360 degrees all around. No physical lighting set up could produce this effect.
wolpoli··on iPhone owners can leave EU for 30 days before they lose third-party app stores
Being the market leader, Apple sets the ground rule in the market in way that makes Apple wildly profitable. However, the regulators are striking at the heart of these rules, and Apple seem intend to use its technological controls to minimize the impact of the regulators, rather than just accepting the change and move on.

The issue for Apple is that the above generates bad press against Apple which is going to erode away the brand, and the regulators might end up issuing more rules anyway.

wolpoli··on My favourite animation trick: exponential smoothing (2023)
> Computer UIs need animations for the same reason they need shadows, gradients, and momentum:

The thing about design principles is that the designer picks the one that justifies their decision, which is more like fashion than anything.

For example: Windows 8 swept away shadow, and semi-transparent material in the name of flat design, making it resemble Windows 2.0. Windows 10 brought back shadow. Windows 11 brought back Semi-transparent material and also rounded corners buttons from Windows 2.0.

Gradients have been banished and missing for a decade, but I am waiting for a come-back.

> because these are aspects of the physical world that we already know how to interpert, so can be used "for free" to aid our understanding of the UI.

The above could also apply to more than just shadows, gradients, and momentum.

Skeuomorphic icons help users understand functions but we have shape & outlines resembling hieroglyphs. I doubt we are getting skeuomorphic icons back ever because font icons are just too awesome for designers.

Most real world buttons are elevated off the surface to let us know it is pressable, but digital buttons now just have a white or colored pill shape around it. I can't recall the last time I saw a pill shaped button in the real world.

wolpoli··on iPhone owners can leave EU for 30 days before they lose third-party app stores
It sounds like someone in Apple is burning the corporate brand to make their division's target because the target wasn't adjusted in the face of the law. Leadership at the top is at fault.
wolpoli··on Gabriel García Márquez: Sons publish novel that late author wanted destroyed
My bad. I did not realize that she rescented her early wish that "she would never allow anyone to read it" [1]

wolpoli··on Gabriel García Márquez: Sons publish novel that late author wanted destroyed
> Do we get to look at your personal journals, browser history and hidden photo gallery once you kick the bucket?

If it is of significance to the living world, then yes, it'll be published. Anne Frank's dairy is an example of that.

Is it the right thing to do? I'll leave the question for an ethicist.

wolpoli··on Amid explosive demand, America is running out of power
Instead of investing money a food producing company, people could purchase forward contract from a food producing company, allowing investors and entrepreneurs to focus on investing in capacity.
wolpoli··on Apple terminates Epic Games developer account, calling it a 'threat' to iOS
To be more specific, it's likely that Epic is a threat to Apple's business/technical ability to steer/shape/profit from the iOS ecosystem.
wolpoli··on New Federal Rule Caps Credit Card Late Fees at $8
And if the borrower does not pay the minimum monthly payment (% of outstanding balance) several months in a row, that is already sufficient signal to the bank to take further actions, such as sending reminder letters or locking the card. Late fee is not needed for that function.
wolpoli··on New Federal Rule Caps Credit Card Late Fees at $8
> Late fees create a predictable minimum payment that credit card companies can account for and create incentives for consumers to keep spending more under control. Consumers may not realize or care how much their total debt is growing if they could charge their CC without having to pay a certain amount relative to the total debt.

You just described minimum payment, which is separate from late fee.

wolpoli··on New Federal Rule Caps Credit Card Late Fees at $8
> [Lindsey Johnson] added, “By normalizing being late on credit card payments, the administration is knowingly putting consumers’ financial health at risk.”

It's interesting that they are not at all concerned about the interest on credit card balance putting consumer' financial health at risk. For consumers at risk, the interest charge is far larger than the late fee itself anyway, which means the late fee is just gravy on top.

wolpoli··on Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA)
> I noticed recently that Microsoft relented and soon starts introducing CoPilot features into old outlook (or 'real' or 'full' outlook as people are calling it at work).

I thought they were done developing the old outlook since they started hacking it instead of doing things properly. For example, in the rounded corner update for the old outlook, they started drawing black squares over message pane during resizing, probably to hide visual defects.

Glad to know there is a chance that they might keep the old outlook around.
