wolpoli··on MiMo v2.6
That will then create incentives for companies that consume AI tokens to counter lobby against those regulations.
wolpoli··on Windows 11's "special" developer edition looks like another marketing misfire
I was quite surprised that this phrase, which papers over nuances in how operating systems classify and manage memory, was posted by someone who studied CS.
wolpoli··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
The HN crowd understands that, depending on bottleneck, adding a fifth network connection (lane) between 2 nodes may not necessary decrease the latency (travel time).
wolpoli··on Delta probes Wi-Fi deauth attack on flight carrying DEF CON attendees
Is Delta using older Wifi equipment? I was under the impression that the current Wifi standard now prevents deauth attacks.
wolpoli··on Stolen Buttons
I have always felt that the button in the last couple version of Windows was a bit off. This page confirms it: Old school buttons used to stay in a "selected" state after being pressed, but that was not implemented in Windows 8's new UI.
wolpoli··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
There is no coherent reasoning here for banning open weights. The billion of dollars to train a model was supposed to be a moat so they can sell tokens. AI labs can't make money by capturing values from intelligence if any company could get the weights to build their own AI token factory.
wolpoli··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
If a person were to receive data from someone subjected to such restriction, is the receiver bounded by the same restriction?
wolpoli··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
Honest question: what is the ultimate end game if at some point a court in another country orders a domain be reinstated? Do we end up with a domain registration system per country?
wolpoli··on Pebble Mega Update – July 2026
Constraints include needing to keep component cost low and ensuring that they could sell more hardware in 2 years.
wolpoli··on PlayStation can delete all your digital games after 3 years of inactivity (EU)
Correct me if I am wrong, but I recall they did give a full refund when they shut down the ebook platform.
wolpoli··on Alan Greenspan has died
Recall that real interest rate = interest rate - expected inflation. The goal of the central banker is to keep real interest rate low. If you have negative expected inflation, that sets a lower bound on the real interest rate since interest rate could only go as low as zero. This gives less flexibility for monetary policy to handle crisis and that scares the central bankers.
wolpoli··on Alan Greenspan has died
> rebalancing of people’s portfolios values It's not just portfolio value. It's well accepted in the economics that wealth impact's people spending (see wealth effect and its cousin negative wealth effect)
wolpoli··on Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone
In computer science, we have classes on memorizing/implementing various algorithms so that we may understand their behavior. Could anyone name the reason why grade school students memorize and execute the long division algorithm? I certainly hadn't used long division since grade school.
wolpoli··on UK to require ID or face scan before you can make social media accounts
> 8. How will age verification work? We know that having a range of methods to prove age is important to ensure online spaces are accessible.

> Ofcom will set out in the coming months different options for effective forms of age assurance for proving whether someone is over 16 that are accurate, robust, reliable, and fair.

The fact sheet doesn't actually specify how age verification will be done so it the title is bit speculative. However, it's concerning that there's nothing in description about preserving privacy.

wolpoli··on Cybersecurity researchers aren't happy about the guardrails on Anthropic's Fable
Or alternatively, it is plain and obvious that Anthropic is using ethics to justify business decisions.
wolpoli··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
The Pi SBCs are squeezed in between the SFFs and the microcontrollers for many use cases. It's only a good fit if there is a need for the GPIOs/Linux/Display. For anything else, there are better products out there.
wolpoli··on News about Raspberry Pi 6 and Microcontroller Development
Raspberry Pi isn't in direct competition with N150's.

Their niche is the industrial/embedded space. For that market, power consumption doesn't matter. What matters is that each model is guaranteed to be available till a specific date.

wolpoli··on Investigating how prompt politeness affects LLM accuracy (2025)
It is rather hard to lose of habit of using search engine with keywords given the change took place without much fanfare. I have no problem using sentences with the current ai tools through.
wolpoli··on Porting 3D Movie Maker to Linux
Does anyone know why the 3DMMForever project stalled? Was technical or was it just a general lack of interest?
wolpoli··on My graduation cap runs Rust
At my school, I purchased my cap but rented the gown. The cap is in a box never to be looked at again. I can't imagine what I would do with the gown.
wolpoli··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
There is a lot of information, in various forms, on the internet that are specifically designed to misinform those who hadn’t taken a course on that particular topic, but leaves the reader feeling they learnt something. Right now LLM’s are good at picking those apart for the reader if they decide to dig deeper, however, I fear this era might not last.
wolpoli··on 40% of lost calories globally are from beef, needing 33 cal of feed per 1 cal
> EAT-Lancet healthy reference diet

I am unable to find this diet. It's likely referring to something called Planetary Health Diet [0]

wolpoli··on They’re vibe-coding spam now
I am quite surprised that Google hasn't done this in the name of security, as email, one of the few channel that brands do not have to pay any middleman, is a competitor to search ads.
wolpoli··on Reports of code's death are greatly exaggerated
Sure, but those same professional certifications and development hours also allow them to not need to re-prove their basic competency when interviewing.
wolpoli··on Parallels confirms MacBook Neo can run Windows in a virtual machine
PC makers are going to stop some of the artificial segmentation they used on the lower price devices, and that is going to hurt the sales of their higher-end lines. There is no reason they kept pushing 70 percent srgb panels on even the mid tier Thinkpads when the Neo has a good display.
wolpoli··on The window chrome of our discontent
None of the reason for the redesign in 2014, 2020 and 2025 had anything to do with solving any problem users had with the interface. The goals were just to blend controls and content visually and make the interface feel fresh, which I doubt that any users were asking for in the first place.
wolpoli··on The Windows 95 user interface: A case study in usability engineering (1996)
> For what they designed it, allowing beginners to discover all the functionality that's available, it works perfectly.

Sure, but where are the beginners are we talking about? In 2007, Microsoft office had long reached dominance in the workplace and school such that the only beginners are students learning word prcessing for the first time.

wolpoli··on Will vibe coding end like the maker movement?
I believe the security vulnerability issues will be addressed with companies using cloud based vibe-code platform or a ai security auditor agent that runs through the code base and flags security issues.
wolpoli··on Amazon accused of widespread scheme to inflate prices across the economy
> 3. If Amazon finds your product on another website for lower than its own website, it'll just hide your listing from the search -- this is meant to be pro-consumer (when you go to Amazon you'll get the lowest price).

Most favored nation clauses are often considered anti-competitive.

wolpoli··on NanoClaw moved from Apple Containers to Docker
The code is always generated using the latest LLM, ensuring that it takes advantage of the latest architectures and programming language features.
