wolpoli··on Gorhill pulls uBlock Origin Lite from Firefox store
> The organization issued an apology for the "mistake" and recommended to Hill to reach out whenever he has questions or concerns about a review.

It's unclear why the author of the article decided that the word 'mistake' deserved the scary quote treatment.

wolpoli··on Microsoft's new Outlook client moves your email to the cloud
As far as I can tell, they have already merged. Both the free version of Mail and enterprise version of Outlook (New) run the same user interface.

wolpoli··on Timeshare owner? The Mexican drug cartels want you
Is there a business model where people could pay to sell their timeshares to a shell company and then having the company go insolvent?
wolpoli··on It is hard to recommend Google Cloud
While it's likely profitable, it's probably not generating AdSense level margin/growth.
wolpoli··on We accidentally burned through 200GB of proxy bandwidth in 6 hours
I know it's not what they mean, but 115+ million IPv6 addresses easily fit in a /64.
wolpoli··on Up to a Quarter of Rental Inflation Is Due to Price-Fixing
> Building more large, expensive homes that are gobbled up by investors or people 'parking' money isn't going to help people that need cheap dwellings to actually live in.

Investors that gobbled up properties are renting them to renters (assuming it isn't on airbnb) to pay their holding costs (mortgage, tax, maintenance), since they are by definition investors. They actually increase the pool of property for renters, keeping rent price lower, which fights rental inflation. This does drive up purchase price for the home itself, but that's a separate topic.

Same with people parking money, why would they be leaving the homes empty when they could rent it out for additional cash flow?

wolpoli··on Forbes Marketplace: The Parasite SEO Company Trying to Devour Its Host
> A lot of classic software essentially worked more like a database. In the last 10-15 years it's all moving to an algorithm.

You just described what I missed about the older software. Older software gives users control over sorting and show data in a tabular format. Modern software sorts data with an algorithm, with ads mixed in, and shows data in a card format, making it a lot less usable.

wolpoli··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy
For tax strategies that hadn't been ruled on by court, and are ambigious based on the law as written, are they tax avoidance, evasion, or are they just untested tax strategies?
wolpoli··on Apple will charge more to swap your iPhone 16 Pro battery
The charge definitely has an impact on the market lifespan of the phone. It makes an older phone less attractive.

Let's do a thought experiment: The cost of an iPhone 16 is $800 brand new in 2024. The year is now 2028 and someone is giving a student the phone for free (and they need a phone), but warn that the battery is glitchy and worn out. Let's say there is no third party replacement. At what price will the student accept the phone and replace the battery? At what price would the student just get a brand new iPhone 20 at $800? Assume the following replacement charges: $700/$480/$240/$120.

wolpoli··on Apple will charge more to swap your iPhone 16 Pro battery
At some point in the depreciation curve of the iPhone, it will not make sense for certain types of users (students?) to pay $120 for Apple to replace the battery, since $30 battery is not available, and instead would make more sense to buy a newer used iPhone. The price sensitive user themselves would not drop $1k on a new phone, but someone else in the upgrade treadmill will.
wolpoli··on We're not going to run out of new anatomy anytime soon
You are telling me that we do not have a way to clean build human from DNA source. That's a real continuity risk.
wolpoli··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
There was also that instance where Siri was gated from the iPhone 4. It was later shown that it was possible to install the Siri interface on the iPhone 4 through a Jailbreak - the only thing that prevented full functionality was a device serial number embedded in the request to the Siri server.
wolpoli··on Does anyone integrate with their customers' DB directly?
I would get the customer to create (and own) the API endpoint that talks to their database, and we talk to that API endpoint instead. Then it is up to them to test and maintain that endpoint.

This avoids a situation where we get an email out of the blue explaining that there is a database change and we need to dedicate engineering resources to make sure it is compatible by a certain date, or even worse and more likely, an urgent email explaining that the integration has broke and we need it back running last week.

wolpoli··on The EV evolution is going to take longer than we thought
That might happen if the car makers could charge a 30 percent commissions from the EV charging companies.

wolpoli··on Why has Japan been hit with rice shortages despite normal crops?
Then they could give free food to countries that are experiencing short-term famine through natural or man-made disasters. In such a situation, consumers are helped and producers aren't really able to increase production in response to the high price - hence a famine.
wolpoli··on Toasts are bad UX

wolpoli··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
I never meant to imply that once a company sell the hardware for profit, they forfeit the rights to profit off the platform. It's really about market power. The two dominant mobile leaders have enough market power to increase their take to 50%, for example, arguing that's how much traditional retailers take, if not for the risk of attracting government interventions.

The intention is to point out that simple arguments of 'Xbox is charging 30%, so it is fine that the mobile platforms do the same thing' failed to take into account of the nuances of the situation. Isn't it weird that these platforms are all charging 30% even through all these platforms have different business models, with different cost structure and provide different values? I hadn't even talked about how Microsoft has been getting no money off sales on Steam when it is their platform, because they hadn't (yet?) lock down the platform.

Finally, Nintendo did sell the Wii U at a loss. [0]

wolpoli··on Roblox is the biggest game in the world, but is unprofitable
Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo subsidize the development and cost of their dedicated gaming system from the 30% cut of the store sales.

It's very different on the mobile side: Apple sells iOS devices at full cost. With Android, it gets even more mucky as Samsung, the hardware vendor, gets 0% of the sales on their handset (unless the user, for some reason, uses the Samsung store), and Google gets the full 30% for only their software work. So the fact that Google gets 30% is wild.

wolpoli··on Why the CrowdStrike bug hit banks hard
To get a driver signed by Microsoft, the developer of the driver is required to provide a full cert pass log from the Windows Hardware Lab Kit to dev center [0]. Do you have any article that says the CrowdStrike driver has been tested by Microsoft?

wolpoli··on Unconditional Cash Study: first findings available
Yup. Individuals want to optimize for quality of life but the decisionmakers are optimizing for household income (or perhaps GDP).
wolpoli··on Story points are pointless, measure queues
> My personal preference is to use time estimates with some uncertainty. A day or less. 2-3 days. A week at most.

In the project management world, there is an assumption that tasks that are overestimated and underestimated would even themselves out so that the total estimate would equal the actual time needed. Sad to say that accuracy of estimates don't follow normal distribution in software development.

wolpoli··on Intel is selling defective 13-14th Gen CPUs
> I clicked expecting basically an undocumented errata with specific, 100% reproducible instructions and a deep dive into the internal architecture changes that could have caused this.

That's a really high bar for a non-Intel investigation. The Pentium III 1.13GHz issue 24 years ago had 100% reproduceable instruction, but even that didn't include any deep dive into the internal architecture because that just isn't information that people have.

wolpoli··on DJI announces an electric mountain bike drive system
In BC, Canada, there is a maximum motor power limit of 500W for e-bikes. I am not sure if switching (or locking?) the e-bike to power assist level 1 would qualify.
