wobblyasp··on Stop Using Git Ignore
I'd rather enforce it at the repo then hope and pray everyone updates their global configs.

Easy enough to catch but you'll miss some. Literally no cost to adding it to repo config either

wobblyasp··on Are rainy days ahead for cloud computing?
It's really hard to build a system for the cloud that can run on bare metal unless you make that a goal of the project.

That can be a hard goal to sell to business. Especially when it requires more head count.

wobblyasp··on Resistance Against Git Merge Hell (2015)
Clean is such a weasel word. Does it matter if you visual tooling produces a series of squiggly lines?

The information is all there. You can grep it to find specific commits.

This isn't a hill worth dying on with your team if it's their MO already.

wobblyasp··on Roblox Studio boss: children making money on the platform isn't exploitation
There's value in just being a child. Not everything is about min/maxing your life.
wobblyasp··on Roblox Studio boss: children making money on the platform isn't exploitation
There really isn't a comparison here. Allowing a 12 year old to work in their parent's shop part time with relatively strict hour limits (at least in Canada) is going to inherently be less exploitative then a child working for a "game development company" in which they have actual personal connection to.
wobblyasp··on Roblox Studio boss: children making money on the platform isn't exploitation
Except for the ones who don't:

https://youtu.be/n6PYj93SGxc?t=384

The point isn't that some kids enjoy it. The point is kids shouldn't be involved in the capitalist machine because its inherently exploitive.

wobblyasp··on Speeding up Azure development by not using Terraform
It's all fun and games until you want to do something even semi non-standard. Nitric even calls this out:

> If you wanted to be able to completely customise your infrastructure, using IaC can be practical. However, it is rare that an application requires any level of customisation beyond the default.

I'm assuming this project is targeting rapid prototype/"entrepreneur" market because I can assure you that basically every project I've ever worked on at BigTechCorp needed some kind of customization beyond the defaults.

wobblyasp··on Saudi Arabia reportedly in talks with VCs to create mammoth $40B AI fund
So much money to be wasted on half baked ideas that rehash other half baked ideas.

Did we not learn from the last decade of wasteful investment?

wobblyasp··on AutoDev: Automated AI-driven development by Microsoft
Thank you for the clarification; I read through the paper and thought I missed something.

Definitely any interesting area of development with papers like this and tools like Devin being released. Interesting times.

wobblyasp··on AutoDev: Automated AI-driven development by Microsoft
Isn't this just wrapping existing agents with a "secure" coding environment?

Does this represent a meaningful improvement in AI?

wobblyasp··on The weirdest bug I've seen yet
Such a tease. At least upload the gif so people can poke at it!
wobblyasp··on RFC 9454: Update to OSPF Terminology, Changed Master/Slave to Leader/Follower
Seems like a reasonable change.
wobblyasp··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
> This reaction is genuinely surprising because I found this post both inspirational and insightful

I would love to understand how you see this as inspirational.

wobblyasp··on Ericsson to lay off 8,500 employees
Oh no, our mythical infinite growth is growing slightly less quickly.

Absolutely bananas thinking.

wobblyasp··on Russia’s Soldiers Sabotaging the Russian Army
Maybe that's what's stipulated. But I do agree, seems far fetched that those are real payouts given their economic situation

Enablement is also a problem. Each time the group had a chance to intervene, they didn't.

Not to say Rick isn't at fault, he is, 100%, but he was clearly in an environment that want healthy for his mental health or productivity.

wobblyasp··on Students may now begin teaching in AZ public schools before they finish degree
Oh, 100%. Unfortunately, that's what the unions here agreed to and there seems to be very little motive from either side to change it.
wobblyasp··on Students may now begin teaching in AZ public schools before they finish degree
As a partner of an elementary educator in Canada, a master's degree no, but definitely an undergraduate with some amount of co-op.

Knowing how to teach well, to 25+ students, is not something you can pick-up over a handful of years. Many don't even after their degrees. Even if a school sets a lesson plan that's "perfect", you'd still need someone to adapt and tailor that plan to the classroom, or to students with special needs.

Lowering education standards is an absolutely surefire way of hamstringing the future of a state or country.

wobblyasp··on You have only so much time – are you using it right?
Ah yes, one more thing to have existential dread about.

Spend your time how you want. Time is never wasted. If you don't want to do something, and you have no good reason to do it (friends, family, etc.), don't.

As the article states, you only have so much time. Stop trying to figure out how to optimize it, and live it.

wobblyasp··on I was wrong, we need crypto
Grifters gonna grift anyway they can. For anyone interested in knowing what the emergency act actually entails, and why it's not the war measures act, Elizabeth May has a fairly decent, if not long, speech during the debate: https://youtu.be/-iPsgfuum2c

wobblyasp··on A World Without Bitcoin
In a world without Bitcoin, people would be trying to pump and dump another Tulip analogue
wobblyasp··on Covid-19: stigmatising the unvaccinated is not justified
Comparing it to discrimination based on skin color seems extremely disingenuous.

I don't care if you get vaccinated; but I also recognize that your are making a suboptimal choice, based on available data, if you don't.

wobblyasp··on Keybase Browser Extension Insecure
Is there another location they could? I'm not familiar enough with extension development to speak confidently but my understanding was that you had to manipulate the DOM if you wanted to impact I/O of the page
wobblyasp··on Keybase Browser Extension Insecure
Seems like a bit of a stretch. You really shouldn't be putting anything extremely sensitive into a browser anyway, and Keybase calls it out themselves. Yes, it's missing from the extension page, but that's really the only "mistake" they've made.
wobblyasp··on A notable JavaScript developer shamelessly copied one of my most downloaded nod
That is by far one of the worst takes I've seen. Beyond the fact that he A) has no skin in the game, so why comment, he B) is assuming to know "how" someone should feel about anything.
wobblyasp··on How to Live in Airbnbs for the Price of an Apartment Lease
Or 15%! Or even 100%! Yes, life sure is easy when you can just throw a number at the wall.
wobblyasp··on How to Live in Airbnbs for the Price of an Apartment Lease
This is just bad advice. 7% might be achievable, but it also might not be. Are you truly willing to risk everything on the hope you can live in someone else's home a couple of months of the year? Why not just do the same yourself?
