wlievens··on Blind-tested soloists unable to tell Stradivarius from modern violins
I suppose it depends strongly on the particular cultivar. I know I was surprised by the difference when I looked it up a couple of years ago. I was doing a keto diet at the time, so you read a lot of nutrient tables.
wlievens··on A Single Div
I know no king but the King in the North, whose name is STARK!
wlievens··on Blind-tested soloists unable to tell Stradivarius from modern violins
A kiwifruit contains a lot more sugar proportionally than a strawberry, yet the latter is usually considered sweeter.

Sunshine did that, by depraving you of red and yellow for a while and then panning out of the ship to show you our sub in all its glory.

What you mean the say is "there are less abstraction layers".
wlievens··on Ask HN: Single-person company exit
It's true, and it happens, not just in Big Companies.
wlievens··on Ask HN: Any advice for switching from self-employment back to employee?
Paying you to work on your own terms sounds like freelancing, and nothing more. Starting your own product company is a lot harder than that.
wlievens··on Don’t support laws you are not willing to kill to enforce (2014)
In my country (Belgium) no one would make that association. As far as I know, there has been one policr officer killed violently on duty in the past decade, and that was in a confrontation with organized crime.

There's something weird with the culture of violence in the US.

For reasons of safety?!
wlievens··on The Tunguska Event
Loved that book, and everything else Hamilton writes

Still can't dock. You need to be able to dock in the stationar center module.
wlievens··on Ask HN: Any advice for switching from self-employment back to employee?
It sounds almost trivial!
wlievens··on No grades, no timetable: Berlin school turns teaching upside down
That's an odd conclusion, especially with so littke information. Her reply re the soldier signals she's capable of sensuble social criticism, and the rest of the story, if somewhat alarming, points to her being extremely resourceful.

The 1, 6, 7 is random
wlievens··on Ask HN: What projects are perfect for learning a new language?
I used to learn by writing asteroids clones. Fun and you get to try out the language features.
wlievens··on Spaceship Generator
I did pretty much that for a previous challenge in /r/proceduralgeneration - procedural castles, where I used LDraw as backend for rensering.
wlievens··on Spaceship Generator
Thing is, /r/proceduralgeneration is running a monthly challenge for exactly this right now but I haven't seen it listed as entry yet. Check out the previous entries, some of them are neat (others less so).
wlievens··on Why Can't Programmers Program? (2007)
So high-end finance is the only "complicated" software out there?
wlievens··on The Japanese art of not sleeping
Not having time left for your family?

My work day is from 7:40 to 16:20 so that I can spend time with my kids.

wlievens··on Boosting Sales with Machine Learning
How do you cram 200 hours into a few days?
wlievens··on Why Aging Isn’t Inevitable
Affording rejuvenation would be paid for by your pension, because you wouldn't need that anymore.

wlievens··on Facebook is trying to build AI algorithms that can help build AI algorithms
Funny thing is that this trend is the exact opposite of what has been the case in the past decades: things stopped being called AI as soon as they became broadly useful!
wlievens··on O Reader My Reader – Remembering Google Reader
Same here, I stuck with Reader till its final week and then switched to newsblur. Haven't regretted paying for it yet!
wlievens··on Show HN: QBE – a new compiler back end
I'm not LLVM expert but usually the answer to that kind of question is aliasing...

wlievens··on The Heart of Deterrence (2012)
Basically you just incentivised the cruelest, nastiest sadists as the best candidates for high office. What could go wrong?

wlievens··on Apple's amusingly round reuse figures
The notion of therebeing Creationists around in the twenty-sixth century terrifies me!
wlievens··on Study of non-programmers' solutions to programming problems [pdf]
The mismatch between the high-level notion of programming (solving interesting problems) and the daily routine is there because in practice only a relatively small part if code deals with domain knowledge, and the rest deals with mundane technicalities (persistence, validation, security, logging, diagnostics, user interface technicalities, command routing, data translation ...). The latter part certainly has its share of interesting challenges, but most of it is boring cruft.
