Markdown doesn't give you a table of contents, an index, page breaks, control over typesetting, control over table layout, captioned figures, diagramming tools, etc. The difference is about the same magnitude as between Pong and Call of Duty. Yes they're both video games, sometimes one is preferable over the other, but they are not equivalent.

Yes
wlievens··on The Collapse of Complex Business Models (2010)
Probably also true in code.

That would admittedly be a much more awesome story!

Of those, only real time energy usage monitoring is really interesting, I think.

That's indeed one of the reasons I'm sceptical of broad passive investing: you include many companies that are either evil or have a bullshit business model.
wlievens··on Finland will hand out cash to 2000 jobless people to test universal basic income
I think the comment refers to the fact that under a lottery many others would not have the opportunity.

Kindergeld in Belgium (Flanders) is about 120€. That's a little over 10% of thr minimum wage. In this Polish story it was 33%, big difference. What ratio is it where you are referring to?

For reference, full time day care in Belgium will cost you about 500€ per month if you are not poor.

wlievens··on Finland will hand out cash to 2000 jobless people to test universal basic income
That also sounds a lot more legally practical, I think. You could even slowly adjust welfare and taxes as you increase the UBI.

You'd probaby have to change their tax regimen too. Seems completely unworkable.
wlievens··on Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2016?
Stock appreciation and dividends.
wlievens··on Nestle says it will cut sugar in chocolate by 40%
Meet me then. I switched over from brown to as dark as possible during me keto era four years ago and it stuck.

But I'm not good with stress. Could be the hyperactive twin toddlers driving me crazy of course!

wlievens··on Nestle says it will cut sugar in chocolate by 40%
Of course, as it would be a lot smaller. Or have air bubbles inside.

Chocolate is made of fat and sugar. If you put in less sugar, you put in more fat for the same amount of chocolate bar. It's not rocket science.

And Factorio for that matter
wlievens··on Nestle says it will cut sugar in chocolate by 40%
The entire conversation here is about cakes and pastry. No sensible 'Western' recipe tells you add spoons of sugar to a steak or a mushroom soup.

wlievens··on EmDrive study officially published
So that would be option one.
wlievens··on Ask HN: What do you regret in life?
I don't quite get the behavioural analysis bits. I spend time on my phone reading the news, reddit, HN, a couple blogs, WhatsApp with friends and I also play games here and there until they bore me. The game I logged the most time in is a port of a game made by a shareware-style developer back in the ninetees.

Where was such analysis involved in driving my usage patterns?

wlievens··on Things I will tell my kids if they become entrepreneurs [slides]
In all seriousness I've often wondered if there is anything multiplicative in the semantics of the situations where people use the word "factor".
wlievens··on CenturyLink to Buy Level 3 for $34B
The ARM acquisition had a similar premium of around 40%. If you picture buying all those shares one trade at a time though you can easily imaginr the price pressure pushing it 20 or 30 pct higher. The rest is synergy or whatever you want to call it.

On a CMOS higher ISO is just increased analog amplification. If your pixel is measuring thermal noise the. You will amplify that too I guess.
wlievens··on Liquid assets: how the business of bottled water went mad
Well it's just plain unfair to compare German efficiency and thoroughness with... anywhere else in the world.
wlievens··on Image unshredding using a TSP solver
IIRC the HDF5 data storage format compresses per-bit (e.g. all LSB's together) instead of per pixel when compressing image data, and tests on our data sets have shown tvis significantly improves compared to ZIP compression for instance.
wlievens··on How We Built the World’s Prettiest Auto-Generated Transit Maps
Awesome material. I really love automated renderings that attempt to approach handmade quality.

A couple years back I attempted to automate our production planning. The effort failed alas (complexity and feature creep killed it) but I did make nice visualizations along the way.
