wiseleo··on Why your next home computer should be an old Xeon workstation (2019)
We have ewaste laptops with SSD, Core i7, and 16GB RAM on eBay for less than $100. They will cost less for electricity. I use them for everything.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Any certification that is worth it? Legitimately helped your career?
CCIE is still worth it. Cisco commands set expanded but remained compatible.

Some Microsoft certs are worth having. The rest of my certs are relics - CNE, SCSA etc…

wiseleo··on Ask HN-Beginner Arduino Kits
There’s a 6 degrees of freedom robotic arm on Amazon. It was about $30 when I bought it. That price includes the Arduino controller. I built it and it works as advertised. It’s part of one of my products now.

A robotic arm is a lot more interesting than a generic kit. :)

wiseleo··on Yandex CEO resigns after being targeted by EU sanctions
NAM doesn't work against an air power of 1700+ missiles launched at your territory. Like it or not, Ukraine with its standing army and modern military equipment will be among the most powerful European countries at the end of this war and Russia will be confined and likely go through internal breakup processes.

Ukraine has been fighting Russia for 400+ years. It has a long history of revolutions against Russia's puppets. Zelenskyy is anything but a puppet. You can listen to his speeches. https://www.youtube.com/user/PresidentGovUa/featured (with English subtitles). Ukraine simply wants to join the EU and NATO. Russia does not want that. That's the reason for this war. And now Ukraine is very likely to attain EU candidate status this month. EU is actively supporting Ukraine in its accession bid.

wiseleo··on Yandex CEO resigns after being targeted by EU sanctions
As a Ukrainian-American, I will tell you this:

There are no Anglosphere designs. There is an insane aggressor who is getting defeated with the help of our allies who happen to speak English.

Our President has appealed to more than 50 countries for military and humanitarian aid.

The countries standing in the way of peace in order of annoyance are: Russia, Belarus, France, Germany, India.

Russia is raping and killing our children in occupied territories, which is an established fact. It is committing genocide of Ukrainians. It has deported over 1.5 million of our women and children into Russia. It is attacking our cities full of peaceful residents and every single aspect of our culture. 200+ churches have been bombed. Ukraine is older than Russia. Kyiv is 1540 years old. We have countless UNESCO-listed objects of historical heritage that are being systematically demolished by cruise missiles.

Belarus is providing Russia with a base of operations, but is itself an occupied nation. We are patiently waiting for it to crash. Its dictator is sensibly defying Russia's request to join this war and so we are thankful for that at least. However, over 1700 missiles were launched at Ukraine from Belarus.

Hungary is denying access through its borders to deliver military and humanitarian supplies and actively interfering with EU sanctions. It will likely force EU to take drastic measures to work around its interference.

France is trying to reason with an insane man. France and Turkey are offering to broker a peace agreement that infringes on Ukraine's sovereignty. Ukraine will achieve a complete defeat of Russia and is not interested in unsecured peace.

Germany promised a lot. Germany helps tremendously with humanitarian aid to our refugees. Germany has yet to deliver the majority of promised heavy equipment that Ukraine desperately needs. Germany is moving in the right direction.

India is not helping. If it chooses to help Russia, there will be severe consequences. Russia is being thrown back into 1970s, literally. It will not be a viable partner for India after it loses the war.

Who are Ukraine's best friends? Poland - without a question, unconditional support. USA - without its weapons, Ukraine would have been occupied by now. UK - lots of weapons delivered very quickly and sometimes stronger than USA versions. You are not informed just how much UK is helping Ukraine militarily. The rest of EU - EU is assisting as a whole tremendously. Moldova - they are broke but still are helping unconditionally.

Do you know why Ukraine's grain cannot be exported? Our primary means of export is Black Sea. That entire sea is blockaded and mined by Russia since February.

Your "source" makes me sick. As far as I am concerned, it's written by Moscow. It says "As many as 75 foreign vessels that were to carry wheat are stuck at different ports in Ukraine that are still under Ukrainian control. These ships are not leaving because it is Ukraine that has mined the shallow waters leading to the port. If nothing can come in, it also means that nothing can go out."

That is a lie. Those are Russian mines. They are washing up on our beaches and killing people.

Please read and watch something that is a little more realistic... For current news, that would be 1+1 International. That's Ukrainian news in English. It will shock you. If that's too biased for you, BBC and CNN have plenty of information.

wiseleo··on California Right to Repair Bill Dies in Senate Committee
Interesting. Susan Eggman is my local senator. I'll contact her office to work on the next attempt.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Russian Military and Alcohol?
As a Ukrainian, I am happy Russia is having "military issues". That aside, the problem is this - Russia's primary generator of national wealth is oil and gas exports of raw product. Its primary internal employment is in the military-industrial complex. What do you need to get a job like that? That's right, you need proof of military service. How do you get that? You sign a contract that promises that you will never get sent to the front line, and then you get sent there. If you are lucky, you get captured by Ukrainians. Else, you die or are heavily wounded. 30000+ dead so far.

Russia's military is subject to extreme corruption. Logistical supplies were sold instead of being stockpiled for wartime needs. Equipment in long-term storage had its parts stripped and sold. That means Russia is running into the same problem that doomed Hitler - unable to feed troops and fuel its vehicles.

One really bad problem Russia has is communications. Its encrypted radios are non-existent due to corruption in the contract that was supposed to provide them and so it's communicating military orders over open air. Ukraine has encrypted radios.

So, why is Russia faltering? It is relying on the Soviet Army tactics while Ukraine adopted NATO-like tactics. The problem with Soviet tactics is they assume the entire heavy industry is in war mode and they do not value soldiers' lives. Each battalion-tactical group is a self-contained unit that heavily relies on military vehicles. When those vehicles get destroyed, which is what Ukraine excels at with its drone-guided artillery, these groups become under equipped infantry and thus useless in achieving their objectives.

Russia was able to produce 60 modern tanks per year. They lost 23 years of tank production so far. These are absolutely catastrophic losses that are unrecoverable, but Ukraine can't win yet because it doesn't have the weapons it needs to cut off Russia's ability to mount attacks. Those weapons are MLRS, which is what Russia is using to rain terror upon our cities. In fact, Ukraine has captured many tanks and MLRS systems from Russia.

According to conservative estimates by Ukraine's ministry of defense, the total combat losses of the enemy from 24.02 to 29.05 were approximately:

personnel - about 30150 (+150) persons were liquidated, tanks ‒ 1338 (+8) од, APV ‒ 3270 (+12) од, artillery systems – 631 (+3) од, MLRS - 203 (+0) од, Anti-aircraft warfare systems - 93 (+0) од, aircraft – 207 (+0) од, helicopters – 174 (+0) од, UAV operational-tactical level - 504 (+1), cruise missiles - 116 (+0), warships / boats - 13 (+0) од, vehicles and fuel tanks - 2240 (+14) од, special equipment - 48 (+0).

Ukraine will win, but it's taking a long time to get the long range weapons it needs. Want to help? Figure out how to accelerate delivery of MLRS.

wiseleo··on Ask HN: What can be done to persuade Russia and Ukraine to “food peace”?
Nothing. This will end with Russia's military defeat. Russia is already defeated but it's being stubborn. It is sustaining enormous losses but still not giving up.

Hundreds of thousands of children were forcibly deported into Russia. I don't know how many, but it's over 200,000 by now. Entire cities were ruined. None of this is an exaggeration. Over 1,000,000 women were deported into Russia. There is no peace option being negotiated. "Politico-diplomatic talks are on pause" - Myhailo Podolyak - Ukraine's office of the President.

Let me tell you why Ukraine is unable to export, despite wanting to and having ample food supplies. Ukraine's primary means of export is through the ports of Black Sea. Russia has blockaded them since February 24. The entire sea is mined with over 500 mines. That is partially why Mariupol was such a key city to defend.

Even if Russia were to lift its sea blockade of Odessa and Mariupol, there are hundreds of mines to be located and defused. Such mines are washing up on Odessa's beaches today.

EU has already granted Ukraine free trade of every commodity for 1 year. EU is assisting Ukraine with exports through rail and trucking. Meanwhile, the entire country is being attacked daily with cruise missiles on its entire territory. There have been over 1500 missiles fired. I don't have accurate numbers right now, but it's close.

Russia has shot up vehicles of escaping civilians that were marked "children". These were the vehicles escaping through the so-called "green corridors". There are many videos you will not see on US news media because of how gruesome they are.

So, here you go... live and uncensored real news from Ukraine translated with varying quality but in real-time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stxveKChQ04 Warning, this may make you very upset. This is not propaganda. You will hear live reports from politicians responsible for their areas and see speakers being interrupted with "I am sorry to interrupt, but there is a new air raid alert in effect for (about 25% of the country). Please go to bomb shelters now. Please continue...". And you will see that air raids map become redder by the minute until the entire country is red. And more children will be reported dead.

I speak Ukrainian fluently and can vouch for authenticity of translation. I have directly saved several lives and I support various war-related charities, such as for our raped women and children (no, unfortunately I am not exaggerating here either) of whom there are thousands.

wiseleo··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
I will probably order 2-3 sets of parts just to have on-site using some random serial numbers of issued equipment. That should give me the flexibility you mention.

This is still not enough, but for large companies with strict security policies it is a welcome development. Basically, having ability to achieve factory seal on a display assembly in-house for approximately $1000 in equipment is a huge win.

wiseleo··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
I own microsoldering electronics repair tools and fixtures. The price is competitive, especially for factory-quality fixtures. Having the right tools drastically reduces the difficulty of repair. Interestingly, Apple offers the adhesive gasket for $1.80. When used with their display press, this makes restoring watertight factory fit of the replacement display much easier.

Renting the tools is a nice option to have. Torque drivers appear to be priced at obscene level, but not really. Based on handle pattern, these appear to be customized Wera screwdrivers and they cost more to buy direct than through this program from Apple. That just feels like Snapon pricing for specialty tools. By the way, Snapon sells individual torque screwdrivers for $256. Really.

This could be targeted at corporations that have staff to do in-house repairs of their hardware. They will have the option to avoid making a trip to the Apple store and losing custody of their hardware. One of the companies where I work has such a department. They order Lenovo parts and fix the laptops on-site instead of relying on on-site field service from Lenovo.

wiseleo··on Framework Laptop Mainboard
Disagree. Many people like me who don’t operate a formal shop have a Quick station and know what’s Amtech flux. I want access to schematics and boardviews. It is nonsense to withhold them.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: What is the easiest job in tech?
Regulatory role. Your work is mandated by law but it’s done by software.
wiseleo··on Z (Military Symbol)

At least that's what some analysts attribute to their meaning. I suspect it's to delineate chains of command when they meet in the field.

wiseleo··on Subaru, Kia shut off some car features rather than adhere to 'right to repair'
I drive an ‘05 Chrysler town and country. I can replace its engine for $220, which I’ve done. It is super cheap to repair. :)
wiseleo··on Subaru, Kia shut off some car features rather than adhere to 'right to repair'
I own Snapon diagnostic equipment capable of servicing anything up to 2016 model year and by extension a few more years unofficially if the model line continues.

It is very expensive but became reasonably priced after Snapon declared it unsupported and stopped making updates available.

The security excuse is not valid because there are many people like me who have electronics background, are willing to invest into right tools, and can fix anything but who have little desire to operate a shop.

My tool can reprogram keys, modify airbag parameters, troubleshoot anti-lock brakes and so on. All of that is safety systems.

wiseleo··on Who is squatting IPv4 addresses?
IBM owns Softlayer. They may have a legitimate need for that many addresses. :)
wiseleo··on Show HN: An AI program to check videos for NSFW content
Modifying a single byte in the license file means the license is no longer what it purports to be. Don’t do it.

The license file needs to be in the root of the repo.

The first thing many developers who have been bitten by this in the past do is run all the boilerplate files like licenses through diff. Some probably have it hooked to every git clone request.

wiseleo··on How to excel in tech without learning to code
Asking a software engineer to be aware of environment setup intricacies does not make sense. Once you hold their hands once by writing a comprehensive document, they will learn and not guess how you want things to be done. I write a lot of such documents. :)
wiseleo··on How to excel in tech without learning to code
Win-Shift-S - you're welcome.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Getting film developed cheap in the US
Part of the film development process involves the lab applying artistic decisions to your film. These decisions cannot be undone. The same is true for artisan photo printing labs. You have complete control and infinite redo capability with digital process.

I bought a Canon T2i with the EF 50-1.4 lens (far more expensive than the usual recommended EF-50 1.8) for $250 a few years ago. Although camera bodies do not deteriorate except when buying a heavily used camera with 20000+ shutter clicks, they still depreciate in value like all other consumer electronics. Consumer camera bodies have long since reached the "good enough" point for most users and now are just minor incremental evolutions. For Canon, that happened with the Canon XSi that introduced drastically improved autofocus and low light capabilities and especially the T2i that introduced full 1080p HD video support (T1i supported 1080 video but not at 30fps). This T2i replaced my previous Canon camera. My photography is effectively free. Let's just not talk about my lights and lenses...

The magic machine is called the C-41 process and they exist. :)

There's a DQ near my office. Too near.

Their app's frequent customer program maxes out at 500 points display. I have 11000+ points. 2500 points is redeemable for a large ice cream cake. The staff writes me love letters on my box. Seriously, I have pictures.

How to do a food app right: 1. Let me customize my order with all available options 2. Store my payment details 3. Let me re-order with one or two taps.

I get hungry while coding, open app, tap recent orders, order again, pay, and I am done.

By the time I walk into the store, my food is ready. I walk past all waiting customers and enjoy my meal. :)

wiseleo··on Home Depot introducing DRM to power tools
There are organized retail theft groups who hit stores very hard. Then there's the construction site and from the truck theft. Tradespeople invest heavily into their tools and rendering them useless if stolen is a desired feature. Even the toolbox to store them is often very expensive, especially if it's the Milwaukee Packout system that is optimized for jobsite productivity.
wiseleo··on Ask HN: Is there anywhere to buy a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 at a “normal” price now?

wiseleo··on It takes $420k per year to run Lichess
Remote hands are often contracted from online marketplaces for such people. I do this occasionally as it's easy money. We do exactly what you tell us to do without any insight into why we are doing this. My objective is to be on-site for 15 minutes and get you back into your equipment. It occasionally takes up to 2 hours to just get past the datacenter security. The most useful docs are a series of pictures on your equipment with labels. It is also helpful to tell us how to safely disconnect uncommon connectors.

Let me introduce you to 12" hydraulic bolt cutters. They cut through the toughest bike U-locks. No lock survives them. If the lock is stronger, there are stronger hydraulic cutters. The only solution is armed escort for trains through slow zones.
