wilsonnb3··on Answering questions about Android developer verification
They probably weren’t. Samsung does just enough work so that they could feasibly create their own fork of Android in the event of Google trying to fuck them.

The Galaxy store is more of an insurance policy than a real product they expect people to use.

wilsonnb3··on Answering questions about Android developer verification
> On hardware devices owned by consenting adults, without anything related to Google, or touching their servers, still they allow themselves a right to review

Aren’t the changes only for Google certified Android devices, AKA those that come with the play store?

wilsonnb3··on Answering questions about Android developer verification
Microsoft does make you register with them to get verified though
wilsonnb3··on A comparison of Ada and Rust, using solutions to the Advent of Code
It doesn’t really compete in the same space as Ada or Rust but C# has range attributes that are similar, the only downside is you have to manually call the validation function unless you are using something like ASP.NET that does it automatically at certain times.

Once the program is operating outside of the bounds of the programmers assumption, it’s in an undefined state that may cause a crash to happen at a later point of time in a totally different place.

Making the crash happen at the same time and space as the error means you don’t have to trace a later crash back to the root cause.

This makes your system much easier to debug at the expense of causing some crashes that other systems might not have. A worthy trade off in the right context.

wilsonnb3··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
Depends on the vendor, Samsung still defaults to three button navigation.
wilsonnb3··on The Amazon Kindle War Against Piracy
It only does it for books in KFX format, that could be why. Rather annoying because you can’t convert books to KFX in Calibre on Linux.
wilsonnb3··on The AI coding trap
100x is such a crazy claim to me - you’re saying you can do in 4 days what would have previously taken over a year. 5 weeks and you can accomplish what would have taken you a decade without LLMs.

Mac mini at 600, MacBook Air at 1000

Apple TV 4K at 200, MacBook at 600

Back of the napkin math but it checks out.

wilsonnb3··on The Amazon Kindle War Against Piracy
The Kindle scribe does that

There is a Fedora Cosmic spin available as well for anyone who likes Fedora but still wants a nice Cosmic experience out of the box
wilsonnb3··on Ask HN: What is the actual state of Linux phones?
You can currently buy a Librem 5, PinePhone, or Furi FLX1. I’m not aware of any others at the moment.

SQL server comes to mind
wilsonnb3··on I ditched Spotify and set up my own music stack
The table comparing the authors solution to Spotify is missing the biggest benefit of streaming services, which is the cost.

It would cost way more than $11 a month to buy all of the music I listen to.

wilsonnb3··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
Back in the day it wasn’t the norm though. We plugged our phones into our computers to manage media, jailbreak them, install apps downloaded from forums, etc.

Hell, people used to use iTunes to manage the apps on their iPhone and organize their Home Screen.

wilsonnb3··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
Yes, you can download APKs but I don’t remember that being common in the early days of Android.

This was before it had a download manager or file manager and using your computer to manage your phone was the norm.

The term predates Android anyways, goes back to the 90s I think.

wilsonnb3··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
It’s called that because you used to download the apks on a separate computer and then load them onto the phone, it has nothing to do with sounding illegal
wilsonnb3··on FFmpeg moves to Forgejo
It does say “a self hosted alternative to GitHub” on the main page
wilsonnb3··on The Kuzma Self-Playing Guitar System
I think that is just because of the method of recording, that is what piezo pick ups on acoustic guitars sound like.
wilsonnb3··on JetBrains working on higher-abstraction programming language
They have plugins for IntelliJ for almost all of the languages they have an IDE for, so you can do what you are asking for if I am understanding you correctly.

The only exception off the top of my head is .NET support, which isn’t available as an extension.

wilsonnb3··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
Only on pixels, specifically only pixels that still get security updates from Google.

wilsonnb3··on Lumo: Privacy-first AI assistant
They've been audited by external organizations and had at least one legal request for log information where court was satisfied they couldn't comply due to their no log policy.
wilsonnb3··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
I don't know why it was reported so frequently as a compact phone, the ZenFones are much larger than the iPhone mini. It's the same size as a standard iPhone or Galaxy S series.
wilsonnb3··on Proton joins suit against Apple for practices that harm developers and consumers
In some philosophical views, rights are meant to guarantee that things are easy. You can see that exact dynamic play out in US states regarding voter ID laws.
wilsonnb3··on Proton joins suit against Apple for practices that harm developers and consumers
Your employer can already require you install an app that isn’t from the App Store, through the enterprise developer program.
wilsonnb3··on Proton joins suit against Apple for practices that harm developers and consumers
I think those problems are largely also due to anti competitive and anti consumer behaviors.

We need to craft legislation saying software vendors have to support some kind of standardized payment system with easy cancellation built in to it rather than relying on Apples good will.

wilsonnb3··on Proton joins suit against Apple for practices that harm developers and consumers
> Sideloading is usually a very bad idea in this day and age.

There is nothing wrong with sideloading applications. Protection against malicious applications is taken care of by the OS through sandboxing and a granular permission model. Malware scanning and app signing also have no dependency on the App Store.

Really all you are missing out on is the App Store review process, which is not worth much from a security perspective anyways.

wilsonnb3··on Proton joins suit against Apple for practices that harm developers and consumers
30% is a pretty big chunk of a market. There is no reason we have to wait until a company has 99% of the market to address anticompetitive behavior.
wilsonnb3··on Proton joins suit against Apple for practices that harm developers and consumers
> shouldn’t it have the right to control who or what interacts with it?

Yes, except when they use that control to stifle competition. Competition is good, so we want to promote it.

That is sort of the basis for all anti trust law, to my layman’s understanding at least.
