Even if you have a FOSS ereader app with good sync, where are you gonna get books to read on it?

The only options are stripping the DRM from kobo books or piracy, last I checked.

wilsonnb3··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
React Native apps are not webview based like Electron, they use native components. Arguably it is more native than flutter, which uses its own components designed to mirror native ones on Android and iOS.
wilsonnb3··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
I really like the Samsung version of this, it shrinks the whole screen down into one of the bottom corners

Unihertz sells several small Android phones still, they are just very niche
wilsonnb3··on Fairphone is now officially available in the United States
Interesting, the tech specs page said Verizon was supported but the carrier coverage page says it isn’t

What does it feel like to type on?
wilsonnb3··on Devtools must be open source
Even pre-LLM this is how suckless tools work, I actually don’t much mind having to edit a variable in a header and recompile when you make a config change.

wilsonnb3··on HMD Touch 4G
I suspected as much after their first use case for cloud services was cricket results.

Perhaps the limitation to whatever express chat is isn’t a dealbreaker in India.

wilsonnb3··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
> How would an OpenAI employee know what Apple's security processes for departing employees are?

The openAI employee in question is also a former Apple employee.

What user privacy? There would be no chat logs to subpoena if users had privacy.
wilsonnb3··on Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development
Companies are already shipping everything to Microsoft or Google and 17 other companies, just the cost of doing business.

wilsonnb3··on Kindle loyalists scramble as Amazon turns page on old e-readers
You can do that, in the US at least.
wilsonnb3··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
Dealing with the alien coworkers has always been the job, that is what software is to most people.

Software developers get paid big money because they can speak alien, the only thing that is changing is the dialect.

wilsonnb3··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
> I can easily anticipate how an inexperienced engineer is going to mess up their first pull request for my project.

Isn’t this just because you have seen a lot of PRs from inexperienced engineers? People learn LLM behavior over time, too.

wilsonnb3··on Spotify adds 'Verified' badges to distinguish human artists from AI
That is definitely the case, they cover this and many other interesting things about Spotify in the book Mood Machine

wilsonnb3··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
You can do whatever you want with your phone too, it isn’t illegal to jailbreak an iPhone for example.
wilsonnb3··on The future of everything is lies, I guess: Where do we go from here?
Massive job loss from AI requires one of two things: actual human-equivalent AGI or no increase in demand.

Focusing on option 2 and software development, teams and companies will only downsize if the demand for software doesn’t increase. Make the same amount of stuff you do now but with less people.

What I think will happen is that enough companies will choose to do things that they couldn’t afford or weren’t possible without AI (and new companies will be created to do the same) to offset the ones that choose to cut costs and actually increase the amount of people making software.

I am pretty sure these are well known economic ideas but I don’t know the specific terminology for it.

wilsonnb3··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
Just curious, how was SQL Server perceived at the time compared to Sybase and Oracle? I know it originated as a port of Sybase.
wilsonnb3··on Why can't you tune your guitar? (2019)
I highly recommend the book “How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care)” if you are interested in this subject.
wilsonnb3··on MacBook Neo
My understanding is that students are very hard on school provided laptops, I don’t think many of them that have been in use for a year will be in good resale condition.
wilsonnb3··on MacBook Neo
The surface laptop is a competitor to the MacBook Air, the cheaper Surface Laptop Go was the low cost attempt from MS.

Also, there are plenty of good laptops from HP, Asus, Lenovo, Acer, and others, the market is not that dire.

wilsonnb3··on Open Letter to Google on Mandatory Developer Registration for App Distribution
How are you going to reach out to someone first if all communication is blocked because they don't already know you?
wilsonnb3··on France dumps Zoom and Teams as Europe seeks digital autonomy from the US
You can upload custom emoji to teams, most businesses just turn it off
wilsonnb3··on JuiceSSH – Give me my pro features back
I don’t think it is that widely available due to Snapdragon chips not supporting some feature it requires.

Good option for Pixel owners or phones with MediaTek chips though.

wilsonnb3··on ICE using Palantir tool that feeds on Medicaid data
I never really understood that angle - do you think the Germans would have thrown their hands up and not killed anyone because they lacked accurate data on who was Jewish?
wilsonnb3··on Running Claude Code dangerously (safely)
Programs can’t want things, it’s no different than running any other program as your user
wilsonnb3··on Prediction: Microsoft will eventually ship a Windows-themed Linux distro
They already have a modern copy on write file system (ReFS), you just can’t use it on desktop Windows for some reason
wilsonnb3··on Prediction: Microsoft will eventually ship a Windows-themed Linux distro
They already do that for Azure
wilsonnb3··on Tired of AI, people are committing to the analog lifestyle in 2026
I know language evolves over time, but I can’t help but be irritated when people refer to anything non-computerized as analog.

If it isn’t representing something with a continuously various signal then it ain’t analog!
