willhackett··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I’m working on a pretty cool private equity platform at Pactio.

It’s probably the most complicated product I've ever worked on. The team is incredible & I’m lucky to be surrounded by incredibly talented people. Our head of engineering is a fantastic person too, so it makes working here so easy!

In my spare time I’m working on an AI assistant. I thought I would try sell it first, but given the ramp uptake I’ll probably open source it.

Reminds me of Montague Street Bridge. [1]

willhackett··on Automating My /Now Page
I love this! Nice work!
willhackett··on Automating My /Now Page
Very cool.

I once did something similar using sockets and Cloudflare's Durable Objects. I had my current playing song, workout minutes and git commit count.

It was a bit unreliable when I switched to Apple Music so it's gone away for now.

This has inspired me to make it again.

willhackett··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
I... I think I love it.
willhackett··on Apple Pushes Ahead with Tabletop Home Device in Shift to Robotics
Another device for the e-waste pile. I'd rather pay for working software than another iDevice.
willhackett··on Apple's requirements are about to hit creators and fans on Patreon
I’m getting extremely annoyed that I have to keep paying ~30% more than other platforms for iOS subscriptions.

I’ve already bought the device. I’m already paying for iCloud. How much money does this business really need to squeeze from me?

If I could download and install apps directly from their makers, I would. Just like I can on my Mac.

We shouldn’t let this business model continue.

It's always the second flip
willhackett··on Using alternative browser engines in the European Union
This is what I don't get. Surely they know this is coming everywhere. Malicious compliance just looks like a dummy spit and hurts consumers.
willhackett··on Using alternative browser engines in the European Union
Why only in the EU?
willhackett··on CrowdStrike to Delta: Stop pointing at us
Okay, good to know. I always thought those embedded systems would be a real pain to maintain.
willhackett··on CrowdStrike to Delta: Stop pointing at us
Am I right in thinking Delta could have chosen when the update was distributed to its infrastructure?

In my mind, a quick test run of the update on a VM before letting it roll out globally would have revealed the BSOD boot loop.

willhackett··on Airlines are running out of 4-digit flight numbers
Code-sharing is a headache for customers. Trying to find your flight on a rotating screen is frustrating, and having a different flight number on your ticket compared to the actual flight is just confusing. We should do away with code-share numbers and use the operating airline’s flight number instead.
willhackett··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I can CC it on emails to handle the back & forward of booking meetings - quite handy when I need to organise with a group of people.

It can also send follow-ups at set times on my behalf or handle some vague inbounds. It's not the best, but it's ok.

willhackett··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I've made an email-based AI personal assistant I thought I'd roll into a business, but ultimately have kept it for personal use. I may open source this as it's a fun project built entirely on Cloudflare Workers (with the exception of one Postgres DB & mail routing).

I've written some really crappy Notion API (before the official API) to act as a CMS for a headless site.

I'm at a weird point in my life that I need to work on these little hacky projects because they bring me genuine joy. It's like lego to me.

willhackett··on Show HN: Doggo – A powerful, human-friendly DNS client for the command line
Did you use DNS over HTTPS (DoH)? I love how easy it is to perform DNS lookups in web apps too through this.

  curl -H "accept: application/dns-json" "https://cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query?name=ycombinator.com&type=A"
willhackett··on WA man set up fake free WiFi at airports and on flights, police allege
Yes, my brain auto-corrected me to HTTPS.
willhackett··on WA man set up fake free WiFi at airports and on flights, police allege
Exactly this. Apple devices in fact use a domain https://captive.apple.com/ to detect when to redirect to a captive portal which will grant the user access to the internet. HTTPS isn't used here because the captive experience is to re-write all DNS lookups to a local IP to serve the captive experience.

This experience would just redirect the user to a site they've never been to before, say: wa-man-likes-your-data.com. This could have a legitimate signed cert from anywhere and look legitimate to the device with a lock icon. Put the airline's logo and a form for PII, wait a couple of hours and you've collected a plane load of data.

I used to think about doing something similar but as an education campaign. Similar to Phishing Simulators at large corporates, I had the idea to display a captive page that explained what the user did and how they can learn to avoid it in future.

Apple & Google should really make it clearer on phones that users are joining untrusted networks, especially any network not implementing Wi-Fi Certified Passpoint (Hotspot 2.0).

willhackett··on Local First, Forever
Loved the realtime cursors on a post talking CRDTs.
willhackett··on I coded something dumb and I'm proud of it
You know what, this is spot on! And, I'm happy you're proud of it.
willhackett··on Two giants in the satellite telecom industry join forces to counter Starlink
This feels like a lot of industries lately. Competition is great, but the ongoing development of so many sub par products just feels so wasteful.
willhackett··on Show HN: I made an app that helps you find where to stream movies and TV shows
Love it! A possible addition could be storing the user's subscribed TV services and region in local storage in order to bias the returned search results. Additionally, on the results page, take the user's region and display icons for each service that they can stream or purchase from without them needing to click through!
willhackett··on Can Microsoft Flight Simulator help me learn to fly or make me a better pilot?
My former partner is a pilot and would train new routes on flight simulator. I thought it was amazing the level of detail could be that helpful.
willhackett··on The "Cheap" Web

willhackett··on New Relic Security Incident – Security Bulletin NR23-01
Exactly my thinking. I'd like to know if we need to do anything with the agents we're running.
willhackett··on HoneyPot – I Made a Text Field Only Bots Use – Heres What Happened
Our WAF logs are fun reading. We see so much traffic from bots looking for PHP files and posting to inputs.
willhackett··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
I love that this was but moments after Nothing was announcing iMessage support.
willhackett··on Encrypting private data and private communications is now an ethical duty
Legislation in favour of the consumer is almost starting to seem detrimental to the startup founder. The number of barriers, prerequisites, requirements, etc that a founder needs to consider pre-launch is bordering on insurmountable.

This might just be me feeling like this, but even considering geo-residency in some of my early prototype designs feels very odd.

I was optimistically hoping PaaS providers would catch up and fill in the middle ground. But seemingly for every Enterprise customer I'm manually filling out a document declaring our data residency, our vendors residency and how we use certain data.

I'm an advocate for privacy, but f* me this is getting to be overwhelming.

willhackett··on Show HN: An app store just for installable web apps
You may need to look at some sort of hybrid configuration. A daemon to communicate with hardware, but the user experience built within the PWA.
