whoibrar··on Ask HN: Histories of Early Social Media
Aahhh! This is something I am interested in as well.

I don't have a definite answer but a few vintage points and directions in which you can start your journey and find more stuff from there

If you are searching for Pre Main stream internet, you can start with BBS Documentary

If you are looking for collaborators on this project then, I'd love to join and make this a thing (:

whoibrar··on GifCities – The GeoCities Animated GIF Search Engine
Oh God! I love this already!

My personal website homepage was looking too dull and boring. I was thinking of throwing everything out the window and starting from scratch without using any external libraries and such, making it retro style with retro looks

this is going to help a lot.

whoibrar··on Freedom and Privacy: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Keeping the Bitcoin maximalist ideas aside, I feel the core of the article still holds true.

Like you can have the exact same text and replace BTC with XMR and it is equally valid, if not more.

whoibrar··on Show HN: SineRider - A game about love, math, and graphing built by teenagers
Looks really cool. Love to play.
whoibrar··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
I use this extension called one tab (https://www.one-tab.com/) which saves all the currently open tabs into a list which can be given a name!

This is the most helpful extension that I've installed on my browser.

whoibrar··on VLC media player banned in India
I'm just waiting for them to ban breathing itself.
whoibrar··on VLC media player banned in India
Why stop there, ban electricity!
whoibrar··on Take more screenshots
The screenshot tool i use called shareX https://getsharex.com/ allows for so much customization. It's FLOSS.

You can set the File name using various parameters in combination like - time date - program name - window title

This can also be configured to do complex workflow like

- for each screenshot add a border then copy image to clipboard and then upload to Imgur and copy url finally run and ocr and copy results as well.

whoibrar··on Ask HN: Efficient and Effective Information Retrieval from Hacker News
Wow I never knew about this. Adding to helpful resources, whenever I want to search something i use this https://hn.algolia.com/
whoibrar··on Ask HN: Help me understand if my site is secure
adding to it (some inspired from bitwarden)

- spellable passwords would be worth trying (passphrases)

- avoid similar looking symbols (1lI)

- also min length of each parameter (like 2 numbers, 3 letters, 2 symbols)

whoibrar··on An installation-art company called META (or Meta.is) is suing Meta (or meta.com)
I also occassionally mourn the death of the word Meta, It was such a beautiful and succinct word.

Meta means about the thing itself. It's seeing the thing from a higher perspective instead of from within the thing, like being self-aware.
Not to forget the words like Metadata, Meta-physics, Meta-analysis, Metameme.

Long live Meta[adjective].

whoibrar··on Show HN: I made CSS Scan 3.0, a fast way to check and copy CSS
Yeah. It was my first time seeing a rather simple extension by solo dev getting YC funded. Not saying that it's not possible but highly unlikely.

Agree with above. It gives a false impression.

whoibrar··on Tell HN: My new free note taking tool
Everytime I see someone from a company actually caring to help out users even befor asking brings little joy :)
whoibrar··on Tell HN: My new free note taking tool
I can think of two things on top of my mind.

1. otter.ai : Dedicated transcribing app, does a great job atleast for English. You can also export the text. Only caveat is free option might be limiting for extensive use.

2. Google Voice Input: I know, very obvious but given the amount data they have access to, it's no surprise it has probably better than even paid alternatives. You can simply use Google keyboard and hit mic and it will start typing out almost instantly.

Most sub-reddits also have a discord of their own, also do many of your favourite products and services and sometimes these are nice places beyond the marketing shills.

One of my favourite servers which I later joined as mod is Tools for thought [0] (15k+ members) which is a space for discussing new tools, productivity, workflow, help with tools and similar stuff.

whoibrar··on Building friend catchers
Similar to any other medium, Discord Servers for nieche interests where there is an incentive to go back (semi regular events / activities) are better than anything else mentioned above.

What makes discord better medium

- Ability to have single / threaded chats

- Multiple channels (#general #help #more-nieche)

- Instant transition between voice and text channels

- Able to screencast (watch content together, explain understand better)

- Stimulating being together, not necessarily talking (music channels, work together channels)

Glad to see this project grow, made my first pull request here :)

Occasionally, I would go there and checkout random peoples blogs and its surprisingly how much great it can be. Some sites look good and are surprisingly fast. I love this collection.

whoibrar··on Explaining Code Using ASCII Art
For me to draw even a simple ascii art it takes more time, attention, effort than any graphical. I can't crop, can't mirror, can't rotate, can't zoom, can't add secondary or any color for that matter. I know the process is slow, and obviously not efficient by any measure. yet I do it and ...

I love ASCII ART. Its elegance is in its simplicity. To be able a draw anything from simple boxes[0] to Mona Lisa[1] to Porn[2] using nothing but bunch of plain ascii characters just blows my mind. To craft is to hand place each character, at its right place without disturbing anything around, which feels nothing less than crafting a glass-piece.

whoibrar··on I asked an AI to make a music video. The results are trippy
From the video description

> In this video, I utilized artificial intelligence to generate an animated music video for the song Canvas by Resonate. This tool allows anyone to generate beautiful images using only text as the input. My question was, what if I used song lyrics as input to the AI, can I make perfect music synchronized videos automatically with the push of a button? Let me know how you think the AI did in this visual interpretation of the song.

After getting caught up in the excitement around DALL·E2 (latest and greatest AI system, it's INSANE), I searched for any way I could use similar image generation for music synchronization. Since DALL·E2 is not available to the public yet, my search led me to VQGAN + CLIP (Vector Quantized Generative Adversarial Network and Contrastive Language–Image Pre-training), before settling more specifically on Disco Diffusion V5.2 Turbo. If you don't know what any of these words or acronyms mean, don't worry, I was just as confused when I first started learning about this technology. I believe we're reaching a turning point where entire industries are about to shift in reaction to this new process (which is essentially magic!).

Important note: While this AI is impressive, it still required additional input beyond just the song lyrics to achieve the music video I was looking for. For example, I added keyframes for camera motion throughout the generated world. These keyframes were manually synchronized to the beat by me. I also specified changes to the art style at different moments of the song. Since many of the lyrics are quite non-specific, even a human illustrator would have a hard time making visual representations. To make the lyrics more digestible by the AI, I sometimes modified the phrase to be more coherent, such as specifying a setting or atmosphere.

This was my first time working with DDV5, and I'm very happy with the results! There were many times where my jaw dropped upon seeing what the AI came up with. I haven't felt this sense of wonder from technology since I first experienced a HD videogame as a child.

If you would like to learn more about how this video was made, try this yourself, or ask me any questions, I'll post a more detailed explanation of how to get started on Patreon (link below). The post is free to the public, no need to pay. If you do want to support me and become a member that would be much appreciated, you'll also automatically be entered into the end screen minigames where you earn points on each video and move up the leaderboard!
