wf··on Visualisation of the expansion of IKEA
You can add Kansas City to your visualization in 2014!
wf··on OkCupid/IAC Employees Donated Thousands to Anti-Gay Marriage Politicians
Yea, I don't really see an issue here. I'm sure you could pull up something like this and point fingers about a specific issue for anyone who has ever donated to any candidate. Plus, these individuals opinions are not representative of their company.

I'm more curious about what the purpose of attempting to smear IAC and OkC is.

wf··on Government's Empty Buildings Are Costing Taxpayers Billions
This is pretty insane. It seems like such a simple problem to solve (eg, send auditor with an app on his phone, input building condition, occupancy, etc. sync back to database that has other information, value etc.) But the regulatory hoops and the bureaucracy involved just break everything. It blows my mind that we don't try to approach these problems more rationally.
wf··on Clear.app Free for 24hrs
This looks great! I'm a little jealous because I started making a list app that I eventually got bored with that had very similar functionality, in 2012. Definitely downloading this though and giving it a trial run!
wf··on Apple CarPlay
>>why do you think planes and other complex machinery have stuck with physical controls?

They're not, Garmin has offered not only custom touch screen flight decks[0] but they also have an ipad app that can be flown with.[1]

wf··on Plan To Split California Into Six States Gets OK To Gather Signatures
I imagine Silicon Valley turning into The Capitol in The Hunger Games.
wf··on 20 lessons about making viral apps I learned the hard way
I'm about halfway through building my first (public) app and am trying to prep for launching it and this list seems pretty great, several things I hadn't considered. Anyone care to corroborate?
wf··on Demonstration at Home of Google Developer. Google Bus Blocked in Berkeley
Can someone help me understand what effect would be had if Google did exactly what these people wanted and uprooted to elsewhere? I feel like that would cause a way bigger problem than it would solve, but my intuition doesn't have a solid basis.
wf··on [dead]
In submitting this I was actually trying to find this discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6993968 but it submitted it as a new link instead.
wf··on Are The Techno Riche Really Ruining San Francisco? Yes, Says Rebecca Solnit
>>The problem is that there are few other nucleation sites that a viable tech community can condense around.

What? There are lots of places that could fill this role.

wf··on How to Use Facebook Ads to Get a Job You Really Want
This is interesting and novel but, if everyone did this it obviously wouldn't continue to work. Also, "For about $30, 50 Google employees were willing to consider me as a candidate." That's pretty fluffy. For $30 50 Google employees clicked on your website; I doubt many of them were in a position to or would want to recommend a stranger to be hired because of that.
wf··on Infection of biological DNA with digital Computer Code
I love the internet. I was at Compute Midwest too. His talk was where I initially learned about this. Are you from KC?
wf··on Infection of biological DNA with digital Computer Code
Right now I can go to one of many websites to encode a program into a DNA sequence[0] and then to another website to paste that sequence into a text box and order that DNA.[1] This is all doable right now by every one of us. It's just not useful yet.

[0]http://www.sgidna.com/translator.php [1]http://dna.macrogen.com/eng/service/seq/standard/standardseq...

edit: Let me add that I think this is crazy interesting and even if the DNA is never executable itself, it's a very very interesting way to store a program that can later be extracted.

wf··on Utah Couple Fined $3,500 by Online Merchant KlearGear for posting bad review
This is a really stupid mistake for a company to make, the outcry is way worse than one bad review. Googling "KlearGear" now brings up a ton of bad press. I guess it's relatively easy for a company like this to change their name and do the same things though?
wf··on Started a stupid company. Failed.
I'm late to the party. But I'm also willing to help you. If you're technical and need a recommendation for a job in the Midwest shoot me an email and maybe in my limited way I can help you. Good luck!
wf··on Alexis Ohanian on Colbert Report [video]
I met him pretty recently at Compute Midwest, super nice guy. He gave a passionate talk about the same things. The book is a quick and very interesting read, as a budding entrepreneur (haha ;)) I found it pretty inspiring.
wf··on Messaging App Line Now Brings in Nearly $100M a Quarter
My friends and I are are huge users of line (we're in the US) and have been for a long time. When a large portion of our group of friends went to Japan it allowed us to message in a group without any extra charges and stickers (the digital kind) are REALLY REALLY fun.[1] I would say I've spent around 10-12 dollars (5-6 packs) on stickers in the last 6 months alone. I was actually more confused when I came across things like Group Me and WhatsApp because they're not as fun as Line imo (I later figured out that it wasn't really marketed in the US). The gimmicks for me to get new stickers are also insanely effective, e.g. downloading other Naver/Line apps/games and adding sponsored accounts (like Rafael Nadal) to get free stickers.

[1]They have stickers for basically everything, from Japanese animes to Disney Characters to Snoop Dog. They also do special occasion stickers, like Halloween etc. The original stickers were none of those though, just a few original characters they thought up. In fact my favorite sticker is one of their originals, "Brown": http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RNLBc7XVLm8/UVl9flhwIiI/AAAAAAAAAO...

wf··on Show HN: Popcorn Messaging – Anonymously chat with people within 1 mile
That's a really great question, my curiosity is also piqued.
wf··on Opt out of Google using you as an ad
The box was already unchecked for me as well, thus the confusion.
wf··on Silk Road 2.0: A concept of a distributed anonymous marketplace
This is way way off topic but it has been really bothering me lately: Why do so many people misspell "losing"? In the wrap up of the OP:

>The federated distributed marketplace will be much more difficult to shut down. And even in the case of shut down, no one is loosing their money.

I have been seeing this everywhere lately and someone even tried to argue with me that I was misspelling it. Why is this such a common screw up? Lose only has one o as does lost. I see no plausible explanation.

wf··on Create an algorithm to distinguish dogs from cats
Oh my god you're right, wow, I need to start working on this now and fulfill my dream to be the very best...

EDIT: I would definitely be interested in building something like this. iOS/mobile app? I have basic experience in ML and have written an ANN in C++ to classify letters (they were 'pixelated' images, 1 and 0's).

wf··on Lollipuff's Y Combinator Experience
Yes, looks great!
wf··on Lollipuff's Y Combinator Experience
OT: Just a heads up to the lollipuff team if you're around, the meet the co-founders blog you link to in the OP shows up like this for me in FF 23 on Windows 7. http://i.imgur.com/db4Lr48.png

Great insight, though! I really like lollipuffs concept, I would also have funded you guys; I love it when the perfect solution for a pain point takes off.

wf··on Facebook 'Like' is Protected Speech, Appeals Court Says
It just means free speech. IANAL but I would imagine that this ruling could be cited in future cases concerning free speech on social networks, etc.
wf··on Tired Of Inequality? One Economist Says It'll Only Get Worse
I was with you up to the part where you think chopping off people's heads is" the only way to revert back to capitalism and liberalism."
wf··on Google is changing its logo
>In any case though, basically everyone knows how to use the computer and the web now. The general UI elements and their rules - links, buttons, sliders, etc, are all known to just about everyone. At this point since we've trained everyone, we get to drop some of the frills around the UI without suffering a substantial drop in usability.

Chiming in as well with, this isn't exactly true. Just the other day in a DMV I watched a woman really struggle with a touch screen because she didn't realize that two of the "flat" buttons, were options she could click, she thought they were just information.

I'm a big fan of the flat look, but I do see how it can be confusing for some people.

wf··on iOS 7 Wireframe Kit
Yea no problem! The product itself looks awesome btw.
wf··on iOS 7 Wireframe Kit
I only have firebug installed and am also using ff 23.0 (in reference to another comment), still skewed (even with firebug disabled).
wf··on iOS 7 Wireframe Kit
Maybe it's because I'm on a PC: http://i.imgur.com/QaEYVg8.jpg
wf··on iOS 7 Wireframe Kit
Off topic: Do most web developers/designers just not care about firefox anymore? I've hit so many links on the HN front page that were designed specifically for chrome and have parts just falling into the ether etc. on firefox. What gives? Don't you at least look at it in the other browsers before making it live?
