weyland108··on Long Beach has temporarily suspended container stacking limitations
I never suggested profit motive was good for public interest. Your argument in fact suggests that profit motive is never good for public interest without suggesting any good alternatives either. It’s easy to make an argument that everything should be produced locally… what happens when there are no trucks or truckers to ship it from one state to another ? Should each state be responsible to produce everything locally….should each county be then responsible to produce everything locally ….at what point does it stop ? The point about “let’s just consume fewer goods” sounds pretty utopian to me. That’s not a plan it’s a hope and hope is not a plan.

“ The Flexport CEO may know more, but the Flexport CEO also has an agenda of being profitable for the Flexport CEO”

These are all for profit companies. It’s a bit utopian to suggest anything else would be better without providing any specific alternatives.

weyland108··on Decreasing service fees on subscriptions to 15%
It’s not really a concern tbh. Appstore hasn’t been draconian in that sense. It’s a fair argument that they can do that if they wish but there is no incentive to become that. Quite the opposite actually.

As a iOS user I feel safer that all payments go through apple. I am assured of certain level of privacy and security which is very comforting.
weyland108··on Deloitte tells staff they can work from home forever
The co-working workspace has security implications.

Also I think the current setup is working to a large extent because everyone is remote and playing field is even. It will be somewhat complicated after half the team is on-site and other half is not.

weyland108··on Elon Musk’s anti-union tweet from 2018 must be deleted: U.S. labor board
What ? Seems like I am better of without a union if I am getting more pay?. Also where is the conversation around building a better product to add more value in this union debate?

He is making a false analogy. The Fire argument is tested in court and essentially regulated.

The disturbing part about these bans is they seem to be done unilaterally if not coordinated by private for profit tech companies.

Drifting from the original comment here but: Consider this twitter and facebook unilaterally decided to ban the president of the united states... what message does that send to the other world leaders?. Last I checked nobody elected Zuckerberg and Dorsey.

> Also your comment doesn't really point out specific flaws in their argument. All you do is tack insulting words onto it without any meaningful substance.

Oddly your comment does the same.

weyland108··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
This is not about minimum wage. It’s about gig work. There is quite a few people who like to do this part time. I think the real crux of the issue is health benefits. If you are not working full time you don’t get health insurance and that drives most laws like these which seem misdirected.
weyland108··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
Nothing.
weyland108··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
It is... there is same data from uber. This is a classic case of politicians and pundits not understanding the reality on the ground.
weyland108··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
I think that’s what is proposed in prop 22. Maybe it could be argued it needs to do more ... but seems like a step towards it.

weyland108··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
Hatred comes from lack of understanding and knowledge. Most American citizens I interacted with on this issue have little or no idea of how the immigration system is designed or works. It’s hard for them to fathom why it is so hard for third world passport to travel or work in other parts of the world because they haven’t had to jump through odd Red tape hoops to do it themselves.

Did u miss the part where he said “they don’t make it in the interview “?. It’s not about handing out a job because there is one ...there is a interview process and quite a rigorous one when it comes to FAANG companies. They don’t go out seeking cheap labor.
weyland108··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
There is no “opt” visa it’s “optional Practical training”. It’s for a limited duration after he graduates also the rules are sketchy if he Would be let back into the country if wants to travel home to see family . If the employer wants to continue his employment he has no choice but to go on H1b. And then H1b has its own requirements and problems with it. Try to understand a lot of people “abusing” the system have not other legal recourse to keep their lives going.
weyland108··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
I came to USA for education in 2008-09. Payed for my own education thanks to my parents and their sacrifice of lifetime savings. Did not take any govt funds for education. I graduated with a masters degree with Perfect 4.0 gpa . I worked my way up from financial crisis to working SV today. I have family, kids going to public school and also own a home. I don’t remember anytime taking a pay cut to stay in the country. It’s been more than 10years that I was legally here and always followed the law and I am still 5 years out at minimum from getting a green card. I rely on h1b renewals to keep going.... so it’s not exactly easy for me to pickup and go back to my home country where I haven’t stayed for 10+ years now to “fix” this problem.

There huge nuance which is missed when talking about H1bs ... there are body shops which do cut wages and should be stopped. However the immigration system in USA needs significant reform as well. It’s hard already to build a life for your family with a normal 3 year lease ( h1b duration) for this kind of misinformed political rhetoric to have unintended consequences.

weyland108··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
Why is that bad? Alternative is burning trees adding to pollution or people living in dark. You could offset the green coverage elsewhere in the state or country.
weyland108··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
That seems like a different problem though I can’t imagine there are so many people in California living in remote forests. I think the idea of cutting trees is a big no no regardless of whether it’s for net positive for environment or people.
weyland108··on PG&E turning off power to protect against fire has created a new disaster
How about planned deforestation in areas of risk?
weyland108··on UBI without quality public services is a neoliberal’s paradise
Is there a way to quantify this claim?
weyland108··on UBI without quality public services is a neoliberal’s paradise
The problem is government services are generally inefficient because the motivation is welfare versus quality of service to attract more “users” (or to put it bluntly profit). It’s not run like a business and it shouldn’t be. ( I don’t think anyone would like the idea of public health program run for profit). I think the general premise of ubi being supplemental to some basic government services is an interesting thought. However I don’t think u can make government programs more efficient by throwing more money at it. The problem is not the money but the motivation when it comes to government programs.
