Soft skills aren't a waste of time... and being good at interviews is a soft skill that lead to job offers - so far from useless if you can pull a six figure job.

This seems like a "why go to college" type of response where there is some truth to the fact that so much of college is a waste (I've never used statistics or economics in jobs)... yet it's more than just college or CS questions.

wernercd··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
Because crying victimhood over every perceived slight becomes the boy who cried wolf - sooner or later everyone realizes that the only way a union can justify itself is by creating problems where none existed. Otherwise, why waste money on union dues for something that isn't needed?

It CAN be both... but generally it isn't.

wernercd··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
> Where do you get your information from

History and reality. Look at union run cities like Chicago and union run industries like the auto-industry that got demolished by foreign companies.

Personally, I think unions have their places... but in 99% of cases these days? The bureaucracy, red tape, added expenses and other assorted BS are more net negative than the few positives that unions offer.

wernercd··on “I’ll Finish It This Week” and Other Lies
d) Tell your boss what can be done realistically in 2 weeks and what timeframe it will take to do the full "Project".

You have two things... a request and a time frame. If they don't match? Admitting you suck isn't a realistic option. It's a lie to start with and it helps no one. Lying to your boss ("Sure, I'll get what I said would take 4 months done in two weeks") helps no one either.

Helps if you have some "street cred" to back up your claims... and you won't get that by saying "I suck" or "Sure thing boss".

> It's difficult to justify turning it off when

Isn't it more difficult to justify keeping it on when you can't trust devices not to, literally as the article shows, punch gaping holes in your network? 4 ports and if you didn't know too look...

At a bare minimum, if you MUST have uPnP, then those devices need to be on their own "unsafe" network with another network further in or next to it that has uPnP disabled.

CFR vs IFR

https://www.methodsman.com/blog/case-fatality-rate-vs-infect...

What I can tell you is that the CDC now provides an “infection fatality rate” parameter in it’s planning scenarios. They range the IFR from 0.5% in their best-case scenario to 0.8% in the worst-case scenario.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/planning-scena...

https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20201030/covid-19-infection-...

A new study conducted by researchers at Imperial College London found the COVID-19 infection fatality ratio is about 1.15% of infected people in high-income nations and 0.23% in low-income nations.

The new study confirms that the coronavirus is deadlier for older people, with the risk of death doubling for every eight years of aging and ranging from 0.1% for people under 40 and 5% among people over 80 years old. The disparity between high and low-income nations is due largely to facts that high-income nations tend to have larger number of elderly in their populations whereas low-income nations’ population tend to skew youngers.

Indenting is good. (as is, generally, being consistent and readable)

Indenting as code always struck me as a horrible idea. Better than, say, type coercion... but still horrible.

"racist actions" but a vast VAST majority of Indians don't find it racist.

When everything is racist? nothing is.

That's the key problem with all of these diatribe's. Anything you disagree with is "racist actions" and thus real racist actions are lost in the sea of BS about team names and Aunt Jemima syrup.

wernercd··on GitHub, fuck your name change
I'd extend these virtue signaling "moments" to stuff like changing the names of sports teams and bases and all of the attempts to scrub "offensive" things from our lexicon.

It's not just limited to "black" but also American Indians, gay people, trans, etc.

These all strike me as Priviledged people being offended for others and trying to scream "LOOK AT ME I'M FIXING THINGS!!!" with stuff that matters to no one... and in the end, they widen the divide and make everything 100x worse with all the policies to "fix" racism/sexism/all'the'other'isms but making everything about race/sex/etc.

So divisive and counter productive uses of time that solve nothing.

wernercd··on Repealing Section 230 won’t do what anyone wants
Because Trumps been shown true in his "lies" more often than people on the left want to admit? It's laughable how often his "lies" are simply opinions others disagree with... or are actually true - even if it takes months or years for the truth to come out.

Example: My campaign was spied upon.

Even to this day, the left is caught up in lies... "find the fraud" for example was just proven an out right lie.

Honestly, how can you believe the left as they scream LIAR! when they support Biden/Harris? Biden can't speak without lying and Harris couldn't even win her own state because she's laughable?

Trumps got problems galore... but he's still 100x better than anything on the left - which is why he won in 2016... and why they had to cheat in 2020.

wernercd··on Refund of pre-installed Windows: Lenovo must pay 20k euros in damages
> Yes

You can sue anyone for anything... the question is what are you suing the company for? Providing a product in a way you disagree with?

wernercd··on Refund of pre-installed Windows: Lenovo must pay 20k euros in damages
Linux doesn't have economics of scale, placement or subsidies... You're paying what Microsoft subsidizes to install windows, office, etc.

https://www.techjunkie.com/why-would-a-linux-laptop-be-more-...

> Bloatware Saves You Money > Because those companies who make those titles pay fees to have that software pre-installed on your new computer. They see that new desktop as a big billboard, waiting to be populated. And, boy do they load it up! > This Ubuntu installation doesn’t come with any bloatware, Dell isn’t making the kick-back, hence it increases cost.

> Other Costs > But, let’s not forget that these companies are USED to Windows. All of their internal processes are based around Windows systems. All their support personel are trained in Windows. > So, smaller supply and a dedicated demand equals higher cost. Basic economics. > Not to mention the additional cost of support staff for these laptops, who need to be trained in an entirely different environment

wernercd··on Repealing Section 230 won’t do what anyone wants
And what do they want? Fairness...

IE: Violent posts from SJWs attacking white people and supporting violence in BLM/AntiFA "protests"? Many MANY still standing and complete silence from the platforms during YEARS of violence, hate and instigation...

"violent posts" from conservatives supporting thousands of examples of voter fraud and calling for peaceful marches - just like Trump called for - while questioning the "truth" about mask mandates that have changed on political whims (Fauci: for masks, against masks, for masks, against masks, etc)? THOSE have to be taken down with extreme prejudice...

The double standards the platforms are pushing is so extreme that "peaceful scholars" are honored... while American Presidents are banned...

You can, for four years, say "russia hacked our elections" with the evidence being a single foreigner paid by the DNC for spy information. But you can't say "democrats hacked our elections" with thousands of Americans presenting evidence.

The article is true that no one is going to be happy... but that won't change while the platforms are the massive hypocrites that everyone in the world can see on full display as they push 1984's "Truth".

wernercd··on An argument that nuclear power makes the climate crisis worse
> Truly viable

When you ignore the glaring problems with renewables? Sure... but why pay attention to rare earth minerals needed, massive problems creating massive amounts of PV panels, recycling issues, etc

We can't afford to let the burgeoning "savior" of our world continue on it's destructive path because the Religion of Renewables won't admit to the fact that it's Priests are doing bad things with children...

To many aspects and conversations turn into religious debates. PC? SJWs? Climate Change? Anti-Nuclear/Pro-Renewable? (or vice versa on all of them) all turn into religious debates with people who refuse to look at both sides of very complex issues.

wernercd··on An argument that nuclear power makes the climate crisis worse
I'm going to hesitate to say this article is very short sighted... it talks about "nuclear is expensive, renewables are cheap and we don't know how to store nuclear waste".

Nabla's comment is a good start on the conversation (good frame but no real apples to apples comparisons).

Personally, with the talk about "what about all that nuclear waste"...

where's the talk about the recyclable waste? Batteries, solar panels, wind mills are all very hard to recycle and add "after the fact" costs like nuclear does that's being unaccounted for - and is happening at a MUCH larger scale currently.

Where's the talk about all the "rare earth minerals" that's going to have to be strip mined around the world to keep up with "clean energy"?

I think this article has some valid points wrapped up in talking points to strengthen its argument while ignoring massive talking points that go unmentioned (True comparisons of costs, storage/recycling of materials and the massive increase in "plundering" Earth goes unmentioned... to name a few).

Edit: Not saying I'm "pro nuclear" or "anti renewable"... I'm more of a balanced approach person - I think the future will include Coal, Gas, Nuclear, Solar, hydro and various mixes there-of and we need to work on making all of them better because none of them are going anywhere any time soon - and they ALL have strengths and weaknesses.

https://fee.org/articles/the-environmental-costs-of-renewabl...

> Far from it. The transition to renewables is going to require a dramatic increase in the extraction of metals and rare-earth minerals, with real ecological and social costs.

New, better ways of recycling Nuclear "waste" is being researched constantly

> A new simple, proliferation-resistant approach offers a way to reduce nuclear waste, researchers say.

> Tens of thousands of aging blades are coming down from steel towers around the world and most have nowhere to go but landfills. In the U.S. alone, about 8,000 will be removed in each of the next four years. Europe, which has been dealing with the problem longer, has about 3,800 coming down annually through at least 2022, according to BloombergNEF. It’s going to get worse: Most were built more than a decade ago, when installations were less than a fifth of what they are now.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2018/05/23...

> The problem of solar panel disposal “will explode with full force in two or three decades and wreck the environment” because it “is a huge amount of waste and they are not easy to recycle.”

wernercd··on Modern action films fetishize the body even as they desexualize it
I think this plays a funny parallel to SNL in 15/16 with Trump and Hillary... Trump played President on the show and Hillary played a bartender. (I may be off slightly on details, but the idea is there - perception is reality).

But my attitude is more along the lines of "I'll do what it takes to get the job done" and that attitude comes from my veteran experience - there was no shortage of times where the NCOs (mid level enlisted) would get "dirty" when a job has to get done...

You can see it as "why is that person relegated to nothing duties"... I see it as "that guy is part of the team and will get the job done, no matter what".

I do get your point and can see how "office politics" can spin things that way.
