So for now, I am stuck with Paypal.
I'm glad that they are caught and would love to have more of these FBI + Philippine Government operations going on. I don't want this country to become a haven for criminals. With other governments involved I think it would be much harder to bribe themselves out of the situation.
I'm still going to use this with caution. I do not want to rely heavily on something that I could not afford in the future.
Hopefully, the pricing/freemium will not make me back-out.
Seriously, jogging makes me feel better and helps me think straight.
I can now sit down in coffeeshop for a couple of hours without a $500 chair.
Currently in the Philippines. New Zealand guys, I have a pending Skilled Immigrant Visa for New Zealand (application submitted last April 2011).
PHP, MySQL, jQuery (Javascript), Apache, Zend Framework, Wordpress, Joomla, etc.
PM me if you want more details.
fyi, i do not develop apps for apple. i gave my mac to my brother about a year ago. i figured that i could do the same with my cheap acer without worrying about dropping or losing it.
I love SQL and find it easy to solve problems with it. But I feel the opposite for ORMs. It adds another "learning barrier" for me. I hate it because sometimes I know how to solve a problem in SQL but have a really hard time solving it using the ORMs syntax. I have my doubts on it because at the start of the project you are supposed to define what DB you will be using.
Also, am I the only one who wasted countless hours trying to figure out how to execute a query using an ORM? While being absolutely sure how to do it with SQL?
This is my current situation. I am not that experienced and have a lot to learn. That is why I will be spending more time learning the ORMs I will be using and more hours figuring it out :)
Bottomline, Linode has everything of what I am looking for (as I have seen most of the web interface from work). Easy to operate, fast, etc. Is Prgmr the same?
Since I don't like moving to different servers, I will probably be stuck with my choice for a few years. My mind would have been set to Linode if I wasn't reminded of Prgmr. :P
It sounds like you work as a support group for the company. In my experience is usually underpaid, over-worked and the resources are not that high compared to the ones that are in the "frontline". And you rarely get notices for the great things you have done.
Google App Engine sounds good. I will give it a spin as soon as I can... Appreciate the response :)
FYI, I live in the Philippines. If get a Linode, I will not be able to afford to pay for my internet connection hehe
I am however planning to get a VPS though. I'll find a way :P
While I have been learning Python for over a month now, I still do not have a server to run my stuff on. I run it on my local machine but it feels different when you have it "out there".
After a month of looking at and learning Python, I fell in love with it. Bottom line, if web hosting companies offer Python as one their "default" installations, then I would directly jump right in.
Python is nice because it has great web frameworks available - and at the same time, I can use it as tools to parse my huge CSV files (and other tasks) while I'm offline.
Python is a very "comfortable" language to learn - I never had that feeling when I tried to learn Ruby.
On the other hand, if I were in your position, I'd just give up the files. It will save a lot of trouble and the client will not give bad review about you. Still, it will be your loss. But do not worry, other clients will come. You can sort of "adjust" your fees to cope up with the lost money from the previous client -- or just deal with it like a businessman and accept the loss (time and money).
Think about the big picture. Is $150 (or even $500) worth it all?
What do you do when you are at home? You can spend your extra/free time on your startup until it grows big enough. At least you only have to work 8 hours a day. In my previous job I worked 9.6 hours a day :P
(Disclaimer: I quit my job almost a year ago but I have not gone fulltime doing web apps. I still enjoy coding while at home. I found a new hobby. :) )
This will save me some time in Photoshop and experimenting what color step to choose next for a good gradient.
I sell my extra time at night to do websites and design as well. I have been doing it for a few years now (>4years). I sometimes take breaks from it though.
I never tried odesk or similar sites. I tried to look for a small job there but there are too many uncertainties. Over the years I have about 1 or 2 clients that come back regularly so I just stuck with them. Although more would be better because I still have more time left. lol
