The double-encoding path gets you there too: the original UTF-8 \xE2 \x80 \x99 mis-decoded as iso-8859-1 or Windows-1252 and saved back as UTF-8 gives \xC3 \xA2 \xC2 \x80 \xC2 \x99, which in Windows-1252 renders as ’. A WYSIWYG cleanup replacing that mojibake with the Windows-1252 ' (byte 0x92) and saving back as UTF-8 gets you to \xC2 \x92 on disk.

Edit: Although maybe that's not the most parsimonious explanation.

well_actulily··on How far back in time can you understand English?
Anecdata, but I took Spanish all four years in high school in Southern California—I knew of vosotros, but was never really taught it
well_actulily··on Amazon is ending all inventory commingling as of March 31, 2026
Their practice of comingling SKUs eroded so much trust I had over the years.
well_actulily··on How did TVs get so cheap?
I never connect my TVs to WiFi, and I loathe the day they start slipping cell antennas into these things.
well_actulily··on Report: Microsoft kills official way to activate Windows 11/10 without internet
I'll never install Windows on another machine.
well_actulily··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
All content is political. Some gets removed.
well_actulily··on The right wing is coming for Wikipedia
Those in the United States who choose to contribute to a collaborative encyclopedia likely don't mirror the population as a whole; it's reasonable to assume they're more formally educated and more technically oriented, traits that tend, on average, to correlate with liberal or left-leaning political views.

well_actulily··on Show HN: AI Code Detector – detect AI-generated code with 95% accuracy
This is essentially the adversarial generator/discriminator set-up that GANs use.
well_actulily··on NYC's Upset Election Was Drawn Along an Odd Line: Car Ownership
Notably the litigation-induced bankruptcy of Gawker Media (of which Jalopnik was a part) in 2016 is the reason why Jalopnik wound up owned by these private equity groups. Most of these publications are shells of their former selves, but I suppose it could be argued that a lot of written media has gone that way—Gawker-associated and otherwise.
well_actulily··on Airbnb CEO says it's still too early for AI trip planning
We used it for a two week trip to Singapore and Japan last year, and yeah, I agree the app performance for packed trips is pretty rough.
well_actulily··on Nordstrom family to take company private
Anecdotally, but it seems like a lot of these sites that once hosted these department or big box stores don't wind up getting redeveloped. At best, they might be home to a Spirit Halloween for a couple months out of a year. Having to compete with online retailers is certainly a challenge, but it doesn't seem like what private equity does to these legacy companies benefits anyone but their investors' desire for short-term profits.
well_actulily··on Visit Bletchley Park
Sure, but if Versailles is 30-45 minutes outside of central Paris by train, and Bletchley Park is about an hour or so outside of London, I'd venture that the extra ~hour round trip of travel time isn't that meaningful to most tourists.
well_actulily··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
And similarly for Los Angeles, the current proposal is to have swimming events at SoFi, a ~70,000 seat NFL stadium.
well_actulily··on An abundance of Katherines: The game theory of baby naming
This phenomena also occurs in the transgender community; people put a lot of thought and intention choosing their new names only to wind up surrounded by other people who also landed on the same name, often for similar reasons. There's even a whole subreddit specifically for transfeminine people who are named some variation of Lily: https://www.reddit.com/r/LilyIsTrans/
well_actulily··on California to impose permanent water restrictions on cities and towns
You still have the potential to fuck up marine and littoral ecosystems if you're discharging concentrated brine back into the ocean willy-nilly, though.

A broken clock is right twice a day.
well_actulily··on Americans are spending billions on stuff they forget to cancel
Some states in the US have laws on the books so that if you can sign up to a service online, you need to be able to cancel online—at least.
well_actulily··on YouTube demonetizes public domain 'Steamboat Willie' video after copyright claim
Lessig isn't saying we should keep children away from morals. He's criticizing how Disney adapted the Brothers Grimm's stories, which often preached heavy-handed and regressive moral lessons in a moralizing manner.
well_actulily··on AN/PSQ-42
I always hated the biocular NVGs when I was in, but that was back when the conversation was between PVS-14s and PVS-7s. Hopefully the dual tube design helps with the nausea I had trying to drive with PVS-7s in Grafenwöhr back in the day.
well_actulily··on Seraph Secure: anti-scam software co-founded by Kitboga
I'd suggest that anyone coming into a comment section with vague anti-democratic platitudes is not worthy of a good faith discussion over their precise meaning. If they're unwilling to state their position outright, I think it's entirely fair to chalk them up as a dog-whistling fascist in the current climate.
well_actulily··on If you could only have one programming book on bookshelf what would it be?
They're not joking, the thread that is linked is literally from 2010.
well_actulily··on If you could only have one programming book on bookshelf what would it be?
Is there much utility to be derived from a locked thread from over a decade ago, aside from as a historical snapshot? What might a modern answer to this question look like?
well_actulily··on New York restaurants fight back against reservations by bots
I completely understand where you're coming from, and I agree that the appeal of fancy restaurants can wane over time. I've definitely been burned by the odd over-hyped spot or two. However, for me, a lot of these restaurants are like theater. They combine unique ingredients, creative preparations, exceptional service, and the chance to witness culinary professionals at the height of their profession. It's the immersive experience and the creativity behind the meal that keeps me drawn to them, even though I would probably prefer a cheaper, more familiar meal most nights.
