wedowhatwedo··on Show HN: Three new Kitten TTS models – smallest less than 25MB
My quick test showed 670m of python libraries required on top of the model.
wedowhatwedo··on The Pinouts Book: Pinout functions for 130 commonly used components
This book is so much less useful than it could be by being mostly black. I'd print this out and use it, if it wouldn't waste an entire black cartridge to print.
wedowhatwedo··on Wi-Fi sniffers strapped to drones: odd plan to stop election fraud
It's not but I'm sure some very smart business person knew Mike Lindell was gullible and would fall for something crazy like this.

A box in the corner doesn't make for good TV. Drones flying around sure does.

wedowhatwedo··on Ask HN: Any interesting books you have read lately?
I read both of these books recently and I feel they are both worth a read. The Bartik autobiography has very little technical information but it's interesting to get an understanding of how things were for her.
wedowhatwedo··on ManyCam dishonored my lifetime license
My annual amount paid to JetBrains is easily justified by my productivity improvement using their products. If you are willing to reduce your productivity to prove a point, that's your choice.
wedowhatwedo··on Wendy Carlos: The brilliant but lonely life of an electronic music pioneer
I was a huge fan of Switched-On Bach. My dad bought the album for me and it said "Walter Carlos". Many years later I was in a music store and saw the CD and it said "Wendy Carlos". I thought it was a typo and would be worth lots of money so I bought it.

Years later I learned the real story.

I'm still glad for my purchase and Wendy Carlos has made my life just a little bit better because of her art.

wedowhatwedo··on MuseScore 4
I totally agree with this. It would be much easier to use if you could put the pitches in first and then work on the rhythm. I still use it but it is difficult to use because this issue.
wedowhatwedo··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
If people are working 80 hours a week on sending humans to Mars, I definitely don't want to be one of those humans. People do not do their best work when they are tired and stressed.

I guarantee those critical of the code have forgotten about it, but I also that Heather has not.
wedowhatwedo··on Tech CEO fired two engineers for having second full-time jobs
If a CEO's job isn't a full time job, why should anyone assume that a regular employee is a 24x7 job?
wedowhatwedo··on Tech CEO fired two engineers for having second full-time jobs
Elon Musk is CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and possibly soon Twitter. Why do his shareholders allow him to do this if it is just done out of greed and disregard for coworkers who may be counting on him?

Many CEOs are also on the board of other companies. In your case, the person couldn't handle two jobs and was let go, but if a person can handle two jobs, why shouldn't they? CEOs do it all the time.

wedowhatwedo··on How one of America’s last piano manufacturers stays alive
Some spend $1,000 on a power cable. Something that can make absolutely no difference in sound quality but swear it is worth it. They don't spend a second thinking about the cheap power wires in the wall that feed their $1,000 power cable....

wedowhatwedo··on We should link student loan forgiveness to national service
...only if PPP loan forgiveness was also tied to national service.
wedowhatwedo··on Abusing RPi GPIO pins as a radio controller
It isn't simple if you use the wrong tools for the job. It can be simple if you don't generate square waves.

There are 100's of similar simple circuits that generate RF that is clean enough.

wedowhatwedo··on Tell HN: Amazon.com is limiting purchases of Audio CDs to four-per-week
Blu-Ray movie players will play audio CDs (at least the ones I tried did). Mine has digital audio output to send it to the DAC in my amplifier.
wedowhatwedo··on Tell HN: Amazon.com is limiting purchases of Audio CDs to four-per-week
I wasn't aware of this so I looked. A CD I bought recently for $11.99 was $15.09 for a "Hi-Res 48K" version on Qobuz. Another one I bought for $11.14 was $9.99 in "CD quality", a third was $12.59 for the CD, $11.99 for "CD quality".

I couldn't find a definition of "CD quality" or "Hi-Res 48K" on the FAQ so don't know exactly what I would be getting. But as you can see, buying on CD is still about the same price as downloading files yet the artist usually still makes more for CD sales (from my understanding). That doesn't count the fact that I sometimes buy used CDs for much cheaper and the fact that I get to read the album credits.

I still think buying a physical CD and ripping it is a better deal if I want to control my music and don't want it to disappear from a streaming service with no warning.

I'm disappointed that this option will be going away because when it goes away, the cost of buying downloaded files will go up even more.

bandcamp is a good option for the artists that use it.

wedowhatwedo··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
"No one here seems to have a problem with this." That is not true. A true statement is "Not enough people seems to have a problem with this." The American political system is setup so one vote is not equal so those with more voting power can win with fewer votes. I would argue that a majority care about these issues and would like to fix it, but the votes of the minority count more. Look at the US Senate and count the number of people each senator represents. The electoral college guarantees inequality in votes for the president.
wedowhatwedo··on Morse Code Audio Translator
The person posting a link to their site possibly violated their terms and conditions. It's a pretty scary terms and conditions page for a toy.
wedowhatwedo··on Morse Code Audio Translator
On the about page: "Morse code is an encrypted way of communication that no third person can read/hear."

The author does not understand encryption and does not understand that there are people who can decode morse code out there.

wedowhatwedo··on Restic 0.13.0

wedowhatwedo··on Applebee’s exec urges using high gas prices to push lower wages, sparks walkout
You obviously don't live in Indiana....to think there are basic renter's rights. That would be a huge win.

I'm only slightly kidding. The Indiana legislature was "too busy" to consider a renter's rights bill this year. They were busy trying to "solve the problem" of transgender kids playing on sports teams in schools. That's obviously way more important than lower income people having affordable, safe places to live.

wedowhatwedo··on Google says employees flouting vaccination rules will eventually be fired
Yes they can do that. They can then complain about the huge labor shortage.
wedowhatwedo··on Google says employees flouting vaccination rules will eventually be fired
This is why the company I work for will give you up to three paid days off after getting a vaccine shot. Feeling bad after the shot should not be a reason to not get it.

At my restaurant we save money by never cleaning the kitchen. No one should coerce me into doing something where it is not necessary. Cleaning wastes my time and money and it's my freedom to not clean! No one should take that freedom away in a free country!
wedowhatwedo··on Toyota owners have to pay $8/month to keep using their key fob for remote start
I don't understand why non-apple customers feel that apple is this way. I have a Mac and an iphone and haven't paid Apple a penny since the purchase of the devices.
wedowhatwedo··on Better.com CEO fires 900 employees on Zoom call
Each person being laid off deserves a private meeting with their manager where they are told this. The fact that they hired 900 people they now no longer need is a failing of the CEO by itself. If they work remotely, it can be a zoom meeting.

Being told in a meeting with 900 people by someone you don't know is rude and tells me that anyone in leadership in this company are people I would not like to work for. The fact that he was more concerned about his feelings than the feelings of the 900 is even more evidence that this person has absolutely no empathy and managing people is the wrong job for them.
