webwielder··on Fukushima Emergency
Misreporting like this for me always drives home the idea that historical veracity is laughable. We can't even get stuff happening now right!
webwielder··on 2013: The Year in Apple and Technology at Large
>If MSFT only had the marketing power of Apple

You mean if MS only had Apple's talent for turning advanced technology into compelling products, right?

webwielder··on SteamOS
At last, all the unresponsiveness, bugginess, and ugliness of Steam in OS form!
webwielder··on Microsoft's Surface sales figures are in, and they're hideous
>They should have blasted back with the truth -- yeah, Macs are cool but when you want to get real work done you use Windows.

You have a funny definition of truth.

Paging Mr. Betteridge, Mr. Betteridge to the white courtesy phone.
webwielder··on The Future of Adobe Fireworks
I can't recommend Antetype enough as not so much a Fireworks replacement but rather a much better and different tool that makes screen design much more efficient and easy: http://antetype.com/
webwielder··on Adobe is going to kill Fireworks
What kind of rejoinder is that? I used it heavily for three years. It's a joke. Here's a tiny fraction of the shit I encountered every day: http://fwsucks.tumblr.com/
webwielder··on Adobe is going to kill Fireworks
Fireworks is an atrociously buggy, poorly designed piece of shit, but it's stil been the best app for web and UI design.

However, in the past 6 months I've started using an app called Antetype instead, and can't recommend it enough for screen design. http://antetype.com/

webwielder··on How to Explain Bitcoin to a 7-Year-Old
This fails to address the biggest question any self-respecting seven-year-old will ask:

"Why?"

webwielder··on How to Explain Bitcoin to a 7-Year-Old
Bitcoin is a lot like quantum mechanics. Nobody really understands it.

webwielder··on Why We'll Never Meet Aliens
Another day, another instance of someone saying "Stephen Hawkings" or "Jony Ives".

The biggest impediment in my mind to alien contact is time. Intelligent life could have evolved any time in the past 13 billion years or any time in the next googol years. The probability that we would cross temporal paths in our few thousand years of viable existence seems low.

webwielder··on You are not Steve Jobs
Came out in 1985 after Microsoft had been developing Mac apps for two years, and was so awful as to barely warrant a footnote in computer history.
webwielder··on You are not Steve Jobs
I don't think that a concept computer costing tens of thousands of dollars that didn't exist outside of PARC's labs with an interface that didn't include dragging as one of its metaphors is "almost" the Macintosh, nor do I see much evidence for a industry trend toward a GUI outside of Apple's efforts and Microsoft's primitive attempts at copying Apple.
webwielder··on You are not Steve Jobs
>without Steve Jobs, someone else could have taken the spot

You could easily say that about the "true" inventors.

The point is Steve Jobs _was_ heavily involved in all of these major breakthroughs, spanning decades, industries, and personnel. He is an incredibly important and influential figure in the history of technology. Not sure why people feel the need to downplay his role when the very people he is supposedly stealing the spotlight from will attest to his genius (with the exception of Jef Raskin of course, who was a bit of a Svengali himself).

webwielder··on You are not Steve Jobs
The last 35 years of technology history is unfathomable without Steve Jobs. Jobs was the one responsible for getting the most influential early personal computer to market with the Apple II, driving the creation of the first viable GUI computer with the Macintosh, ensuring that CGI animation became the de facto standard with Pixar, founding a company that produced the machine that the World Wide Web was invented on, being instrumental in the introduction of PostScript and desktop publishing, and on and on. He may not be the sole inventor of these things, but ask Steve Wozniak, Bill Atkinson, Ed Catmull, Tim Berners Lee, John Warnock, et al where they and their inventions would be without Steve Jobs.

webwielder··on Zuckerberg bores staff in new Facebook Home ad
Microsoft's original campaign for WP7 focused on the idea that it let you check your phone quickly and then get back to real life. This commercial is all about shutting out reality. I have a feeling about which message is going to resonate more with people.
webwielder··on Google wants to build the Star Trek computer
The computer in TOS was almost horrifyingly robotic. It was used sparingly by the crew, and technology was generally seen as a necessary evil (there was even an episode where a new computer system threatened to take away Kirk and co.'s jobs).

It wasn't until TNG that the computer became a friendly, integral part of the Enterprise. The crew widely acknowledged and were comfortable with the fact that the computer could do all of their jobs, but that never became an issue.

This shift corresponds with the rise of the personal computer away from mainframes, and the replacement of blinking lights with GUIs for depictions of computers in film and television. I will now resist the urge to credit Apple for helping usher in such a shift in culture.

webwielder··on Ask HN: Incorrect user name and/or password
But as slg mentioned below, it's trivial to check if a username/email is registered through the forgot password page. So some snooping significant other can still find out if they really want to.

webwielder··on Show HN: Webflow - Design responsive websites visually
Serious question, as I enjoy posting on HN and don't want to run afoul of the community. Was my comment negged because I was seen as hijacking a thread by making general comments about web apps rather than addressing Webflow specifically?

Or is it because of my negativity toward web apps and an appearance of ignorance on the state the art?

webwielder··on Show HN: Webflow - Design responsive websites visually
>universal compatibility regardless of OS

The browser becomes the OS for web apps, and in this case Webflow only supports one OS, Chrome.

webwielder··on Show HN: Webflow - Design responsive websites visually
Don't be sad, it's only the top post because I just posted it. As for how it's relevant, I believe I'm saying in a roundabout way that I'd much prefer Webflow if it was a native app, while making a larger point about my reservations over web apps, especially the web design web apps I've been seeing a lot of lately.
webwielder··on Show HN: Webflow - Design responsive websites visually
This is really nice, but I just can't get too excited over web apps. Whether it's not having direct access to my source files, relying on the service to stay up (either from server or business issues), working when offline, not having access to OS-level services, the clunkiness and slowness compared to native, or the cognitive overhead of the app being inside another app, I think I'll always prefer desktop apps.

webwielder··on How Apple Gets All the Good Apps
For an alternative body to that headline, you could say:

A) A 30 year history and culture of setting and raising the bar in application design, attracting like-minded designers and developers to their platforms who continually one-up Apple's own efforts. B) Coherent, stable, powerful application frameworks C) Relatively fixed device specifications

webwielder··on Japan extracts gas from methane hydrate in world first
I'm reminded of Homer Simpson confessing during an AA meeting that he was so desperate for a drink he ate the dirt under the bleachers at the football stadium.
