wbsss4412··on Ask HN: Discord banned me with no recourse
Email is a different beast though, as it is set up to replicate snail mail. You need to be able to receive mail from anyone at any time.

For private, personal use at least, you don’t need this for a service that competes with discord. I’m not allowing random strangers into my chats, having an allowlist basically makes spam a non issue.

Now, that doesn’t fix the problem for public channels, but spam/trolling is always an issue on those anyways, and frankly, I don’t understand how people can use discord for that purpose in the first place.

wbsss4412··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
There are always options besides selling the whole company to a giant competitor, the difference is just that you won’t get as high of a return if there are fewer bidders in the marketplace.

A company like figma could have always just gone public if the founders/investors just wanted to get out.

wbsss4412··on Italians at boiling point over how to cook pasta with less gas
That appears to be the plan/long term sustainable grid scale storage of some sort.

There’s also the potential for demand smoothing.

wbsss4412··on How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing
I don’t understand what drives people into thinking that housing is the only thing that isn’t priced based on supply and demand.
wbsss4412··on Ask HN: What are examples of companies dying due to many people quitting?
Realistically, most things that are tech/tech adjacent are a dumpster fire.

The number of uninformed comments on inflation/monetary policy on here is exhausting.

wbsss4412··on China Accuses the NSA of Hacking a Top University to Steal Data
Projection is when you accuse someone of doing something that they haven’t actually done.

What you mean is that they’re being hypocritical.

wbsss4412··on Italians at boiling point over how to cook pasta with less gas
The peaker plant/base load choice is based on aggregate load though, the power provider has little to no knowledge of what appliances households are using. An electric stove, and realistically anything else that uses electricity, is therefore using one or the other based on the usage pattern of the whole customer base at that time.
wbsss4412··on Italians at boiling point over how to cook pasta with less gas
> Roughly the same as the inefficiencies of an electric stove.

As someone who regularly cooks with both, this is quite clearly not the case. When I cook with a gas stove everything around the burner gets ridiculously hot, not just the pot, while on the glass top electric stove, the surrounding environment is comfortably cool.

Gas flames do not direct heat well.

> You have no means of access to objective or balanced information. You can't read anything about Russia or Ukraine in the original uncensored form.

Does anyone? I never was under any belief that I did.

Excuse my understanding, but is it your assertion that there is unfettered access to uncensored information within Russia??

wbsss4412··on Evidence says Wikipedia is accurate, reliable. When will we take it seriously?
Yes, except that is not a market outcome, that is government intervention into the market.

That is substantively different from a government granted monopoly, wherein it is illegal to create a competing business.

The point is that monopolies are a natural market outcome, and are what created Google. Does Google continue to exist as it is because the government has chosen not to do anything? Yes. Welcome to the free market.

> How Zelensky, for example, crushed all the opposition parties and media, and even arrested some of his opponents after he came to power? Do you know about that?

This has been covered in Western press:

https://m.dw.com/en/ukraine-zelenskiy-bans-three-opposition-...

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/former-ukraine-presiden...

However, I haven’t seen any thing that says _all_ opposition has been banned, do you have proof of this?

> Would you be able to understand without translation? Who would translate it to you?

I’d rather you post something than just make blanket statements with no basis. Unfortunately I can’t understand Russian/Ukrainian, but then again anything translated into English would be from western sources anyways.

> I'm pretty sure it won't exist for long on YouTube, and it won't be ever translated to English

Everything you posted has been up for years.

wbsss4412··on Evidence says Wikipedia is accurate, reliable. When will we take it seriously?
Antitrust is government intervention into the market. Not enforcing antitrust is not granting a monopoly.

Don’t get me wrong, antitrust is good! Government intervention is necessary. But lasseiz-fares does not mean what you appear to think it means.

> It wasn't a revolution - it was a coup funded and organized by the EU and USA.

I don’t doubt that there was western involvement, just as there was certainly Russian involvement supporting prior administrations. While it can be difficult to discern the true desires of Ukrainians given outside involvement, its very easy to say that the current government in Ukraine is much more democratic than plenty of US Allies in other parts of the world, eg the Middle East.

> Also, your media probably do not say that Ukrainian politicians repeatedly announced plans to exterminate Russian population of Ukraine. Physically kill all the Russians just as Hitler (he's considered a hero in Ukraine) wanted. You'd probably never find this in English or any other language spoken on the West, but there is plenty of evidence in Russian/Ukrainian even though a lot of it being scrubbed in the last 200 days. Still you can find a lot of those on YouTube for example, if you can understand Russian/Ukrainian.

If this is so easy to find, why not provide actual sources?

Edit: the irony here is the extremely close parallels between this war and hitter’s annexation of the sudentenland.

> How do you know this? Did Putin said this personally to you? Announced this in the media?

I can tell from his actions. Russia has been invading its neighbors the entire time he’s been in power.

Did I go a bit overboard when I said “complete fealty”? Sure. But it’s quite obvious that Putin won’t accept those states as anything less than Russian client states within its sphere of influence.

> Has US ever suffered sanctions for that? I don't remember any.

US does bad things so other countries should do bad things too.

wbsss4412··on European natural gas imports and storage reserves
> Your "simple first step" is nonsense

What are you talking about? I never said anything about a “simple first step”

> appeals to right and wrong are only persuasive for people who are aligned with you one that

Look, I’m all for understanding the other side, but don’t take empathy so far that morality has no meaning.

wbsss4412··on European natural gas imports and storage reserves
Your analysis is seemingly based in the notion that all viewpoints are equal valid, but an analysis of the war needs to be rooted in what’s right and what’s wrong.

Russia is fighting a war of aggression in Ukraine. Do they have interests there? Sure, but that doesn’t give them the right to invade and topple the government.

Before you ask, yes the US is extremely guilty of this exact same behavior, it is also wrong.

This war started because Putin won’t accept anything less then complete fealty from the leaders of Ukraine/Belarus, and the 2014 revolution that threw out Yanikovich meant that they didn’t have a leader that was 100% on their side in Ukraine.

wbsss4412··on Evidence says Wikipedia is accurate, reliable. When will we take it seriously?
Did the government grant Google a monopoly?

This is a market outcome. Perfect competition is not the natural state of the market, even though free marketers prefer to hand wave it into existence.

wbsss4412··on Evidence says Wikipedia is accurate, reliable. When will we take it seriously?
I’ll have to watch the video later to see how good their argument is… but I don’t but it.

“The market” has seemingly deemed low value SEO spam to be what’s valuable. If Wikipedia didn’t exist, I imagine the alternative would more likely be garbage rather than quality.

wbsss4412··on Software fees to make up 10% of John Deere's revenues by 2030
You set this up as an either/or as though we had no system of crop development in place before patents.

Though this may accelerate development, the real question is whether the cost is worth it.

wbsss4412··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
I don’t know, I didn’t interrogate them about it. I would imagine they considered that, but, then again, maybe not.
wbsss4412··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
Never said it was typical, only that it exists.

When these conversations come up, people always trot out the wait time line, and it’s true, wait times are generally on the lower end for the US compared to other countries. However, they are not zero. Depending on the need, the region, and the time, you have to wait in America, just the same as in other countries.

wbsss4412··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
> Yes, but it's most likely a top dermatologist.

It is not. It is a dermatologist.

> Almost one year is definitely not normal.

I would like to believe that too, but I don’t know what to tell you.

wbsss4412··on Ask HN: Why is pay so much higher in the US? (or is it?)
Meanwhile my friend here I’m the US has to wait until may 2023 to see a dermatologist.

Long wait times exist in the US as well, we just like to pretend that it’s a socialized medicine thing.

wbsss4412··on Bikes, not self driving cars, are the technological gateway to urban progress
Absolutely!

Unfortunately, from a political perspective, drivers will still to maximize their share of road space, and tend to oppose shifting car lanes to bike lanes. When confronted with the issues that cars cause (pollution, accidents, etc), technology like EVs and self driving gets deployed as a way to suggest that the status quo is fine (despite the fact that plenty of drivers seem to be upset about the EV transition, but I digress).

wbsss4412··on Bikes, not self driving cars, are the technological gateway to urban progress
I hear what you’re saying, but the thing is that, while I agree with you on the efficiency point, more room for bikes still means less room for cars in sum. The fact that more bikes on the road means more room for the cars that remain, doesn’t take away from the fact that there are few cars, and less room dedicated cars in total.
wbsss4412··on ‘Return to the office’ rhetoric needs to end
I half agree, though I’ve seen plenty of people on Facebook/YouTube/shopping sites at every office I’ve worked in while on the clock, not to mention just goofing off with coworkers talking about whatever subject.

When I’m at home I find it much easier to create a distraction free environment without the noise and uneasiness of someone looking over my shoulder.

wbsss4412··on Bikes, not self driving cars, are the technological gateway to urban progress
To a degree, yes. Bikes and cars compete for road space.

Though I think the overall point is that self driving cars solve fewer problems than their proponents claim.

wbsss4412··on Maps from The End of the World Is Just the Beginning
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can see how it’s confusing, but it’s a fairly well understood term by people within geopolitical circles. Unless you believe latitude is the most important explanatory variable in geopolitics, I don’t think the edge cases are such a big deal as to prevent us from using global north/south as a shorthand.

wbsss4412··on Maps from The End of the World Is Just the Beginning
I’m not sure if you’re just unfamiliar but, no, China is not part of the global north.

wbsss4412··on Apple’s next big thing: A business model change
My response isn’t based on the tech itself, it’s based off of society/culture/consumer behavior.

I’m skeptical that glasses will become ubiquitous from a consumer purchasing standpoint.

wbsss4412··on Maps from The End of the World Is Just the Beginning
Look at the CO2 chart in the link above, China only recently became the biggest emitter and even then they make up maybe a quarter of CO2 emissions.

The vast majority of emissions and environmental destruction has been done by the global north, only recently has the rest of the world started to become the majority in this sense. You can’t just point the finger and forget all of history up to this point.
