wavesounds··on What Data Does Facebook Collect When I’m Not Using Facebook, and Why?
From the post: "Facebook ads and measurement tools, which enable websites and apps to show ads from Facebook advertisers, to run their own ads on Facebook or elsewhere, and to understand the effectiveness of their ads."
wavesounds··on Mark Zuckerberg Refuses to Admit How Facebook Works
Zuckerberg is the one being disingenuous. By acknowledging cookie tracking or scraper tracking, he answers the question that indeed FB tracks offline usage, but only mentions the innocuous cases and fails to acknowledge the Shadow Profiles[1] they clearly have

wavesounds··on Do What You Love and Starve? (2006)
Really? I keep hearing about how there are too many science phd's and not enough work outside of low pay post-doc gigs. Can you share some links as too who these companies or industries are in the environmental space that are hiring? Genuinely interested.
wavesounds··on Bitcoin Mining Now Consuming More Electricity Than Many Countries
Bitcoin is like the monster that escaped our lab and is rampaging the city and nobody can stop it because people have "invested" $130 Billion dollars into it and so they won't let it die.
wavesounds··on Join the Battle for Net Neutrality
"Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." - Robert F Kennedy
wavesounds··on Ask HN: What are engineering solutions to preserve Net Neutrality?
What are the limitations of this? How come it hasn't taken off?
wavesounds··on Ask HN: What are engineering solutions to preserve Net Neutrality?
What if Netflix hosted a VPN? Instead of paying comcast $5 for ever website I want to visit, I just pay comcast for Netflix and use the VPN that comes with my Netflix subscription to get everything else for free?
wavesounds··on Venezuela just defaulted, moving deeper into crisis
Planet Money has good episode on this exact topic called "How Venezuela Imploded": https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2016/10/21/498867764/epis...

tldr: They didn't invest the oil revenues wisely and became reliant on high oil prices

wavesounds··on Ask HN: You have $100/mo to invest in cryptocurrency, BTC, BTC Cash or Ether?
Neither you are literally paying people to waste electricity. Invest in a company that actually makes something people use
wavesounds··on Google I/O 2017
LCD Soundsystem had this giant farewell show at Madison Square Garden complete with documentary and album saying it was there last show ever. Now they've come back to play tech conferences? Lame
wavesounds··on Elon Musk is getting serious about digging a tunnel under Los Angeles
Self driving cars might actually make traffic worse because people can live farther away where houses are cheaper because now they can work or sleep during their commute. This means any given section of road will have more cars on it because people have to travel farther.
wavesounds··on People Are Dying Younger Because America Keeps Failing the Bad-Break Test
This idea that the right is voting against their best interest needs to die. The thing the left forgets is that poor people don't vote[1]. So what you have in these "poor" red states are lower-middle/middle class people who are already being stretched thin voting against their poor neighbors who they can't afford to support.

Like it or not Obamacare did cost middle class people money in the sense that their tax dollars went to pay for subsidies, their employers were required to spend more on health care, more demand for medical services drives prices higher and the individual mandate meant healthy people had to buy something they didn't want or be fined.

Universal healthcare, tax credits for the poor and cash welfare can all be viewed through the same lens.

wavesounds··on Consumers are switching to water as they avoid sugary beverages
Uh where are you buying your La Croix? They are the same price on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Croix-Naturally-Essenced-Sparkling-Va... https://www.amazon.com/Coca-Cola-24-12-Fl-Cans/dp/B0012QO8AY...

Edit: As people pointed out Amazon has shitty prices on these things. Still in my experience La Croix is about the same price as Coke when you compare them both on sale or both not on sale.

wavesounds··on Ask HN: How do you deal with performance anxiety during interviews?
Thanks for sharing, it's nice to know the same thing happens to other people.
wavesounds··on Ask HN: How do you deal with performance anxiety during interviews?
The symptoms are the same but I felt like I got enough sleep and had enough to eat. I could probably cut down on the caffeine though.
wavesounds··on Ask HN: How do you deal with performance anxiety during interviews?
Thanks. I think this seems to be the general consensus. Just do more interviews. Luckily the job market allows for us to do that now. I just wonder if I can push back the other interviews for jobs I care about that I have scheduled already.
wavesounds··on Ask HN: How do you deal with performance anxiety during interviews?
I just found this other Ask HN thread on the topic that has some good thoughts https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1618500
wavesounds··on Ask HN: How do you deal with performance anxiety during interviews?
That makes sense. I think its the talking while thinking/writing part thats hard. When I'm around strangers I usually want to fill the silence with some kind of conversation, silence feels awkward, yet I need to allow myself time to think.
wavesounds··on Ask HN: How do you deal with performance anxiety during interviews?
I've gone through all the questions on that website at least twice many of them three times with a whiteboard, I'll try putting it on the wall.

Like I said though I knew that I had done this question before and knew how to do it. Just like I knew that (x > 0 || x < 0) is the same thing as (x != 0). I think its the actual being in front of a stranger part that I need to practice most.

wavesounds··on Regulators Propose Banning Theranos Founder from Blood Testing
"One of those tests, a blood-coagulation test known as prothrombin time, measures how long it takes blood to clot and is often used by doctors to determine which dosage of the blood thinner warfarin to give patients.

Wrong prothrombin time results could cause doctors to prescribe too little or too much warfarin. Too much of the drug, also known by its brand name Coumadin, can cause fatal bleeding, while too little can leave patients vulnerable to clots and strokes, according to medical experts."

Huge free market failure here. Thank god we still have some working government regulation in this country.

wavesounds··on New York Discovers Wall Street Charges Fees
The biggest sham is that Wall Street has convinced us all that they deserve to paid in percentages! Sure %0.2 doesn't sound like much until you realize its $200 million dollars a year. Why is everyone so afraid of just hiring a few smart economists paying them $200k each salary? Nobody really beats the market over the long term anyway.
wavesounds··on California has about one year of water left
Why don't we run a water pipeline down from Oregon? In Portland they have so much water that their drinking fountains literally do not have an off switch. We run pipelines for oil all over the country, would it be that hard to run one for water?
wavesounds··on The Hiring Post
It totally depends on the work sample they ask you to do. If no thought went into it then you are correct. If, however, a company devises an interesting project to work on it show they also put some energy into this.

Most importantly though I like programming, but I don't like speaking up in front of a group of strangers, so 6 hours of programming is much more enjoyable to me then even just 1 hour of interviewing.

wavesounds··on Ask HN: What kind of jobs only work 40 hours a week?
That would be great. Do you know any efficient way of finding these positions in SF? I just searched the handful of European companies I know of and they don't have any listings in SF.

Also I don't necessarily need as much vacation as Europeans get, just a few weeks a year that I'm actually encouraged to use would be fine.

wavesounds··on Ask HN: What do you hate about finding a new job?
1. Being asked to code things on a white board or shared online doc that the interviewer knows are hard just so they can watch you sweat. It's just testing how well you perform under pressure, not if you know how to program well or not. Candidates should have the option to code without someone breathing down their neck if they prefer.

2. Not being up front about how many hours people actually work. In my experience, everyone lies about this. Companies claim they work 40 hour weeks but really work 60+ with time expected at home and on the weekends. And their "unlimited vacation" time really means "no vacation time". You shouldn't have to wait to start the job before finding out the answer to this question. That kind of bait and switch leads to resentment.

wavesounds··on Police allow car break-ins to become a Seattle growth industry
When this happened to my friend in Berkeley CA we called the police and after waiting almost an hour the officer that came didn't even get out of his car, he told us to file a report online. There was a security camera pointed at the lot which he said was "pointless" to try to access.
wavesounds··on The YouTube Contract for Indies
Independent artists need to stop being independent and form up into groups that collectively have a large audience and then higher a lawyer to represent them, its the only smaller bands can have any leverage with streaming services. This is arguably the only reason for "record labels" to still exist.
wavesounds··on The Ocean Cleanup
As someone who has routinely ridden a bike along the rivers of Los Angeles I can tell you there is nothing being done to stop the flow of trash from streets, through storm drains, to rivers straight into the ocean. Targeting rivers like these in major population areas seems like the cheapest, easiest, most effective first step to stopping this problem.
wavesounds··on Why is San Francisco public transportation so bad?
The whole Bay Area really needs leadership that is serious about investing in growth, both in transportation infrastructure and housing. It's frustrating that a world class city is consistently held back by NIMBYism that stops progress.
wavesounds··on Why America's Middle-Class Housing Crunch Is Here to Stay
"That means the main way to build more is to build denser projects, with taller buildings and smaller units. Doing that can be very difficult politically"

I will vote for anyone who runs on a campaign vowing to do this, and you should too. We need more affordable housing and in most urban markets the only direction is up.
