wavesounds··on Greater than 99% consensus on human caused climate change in the literature
If you live in the US I urge you to contact your congressional representatives and ask them to support passing a bipartisan Carbon Tax, which Romney recently said he could support[1], via budget reconciliation.

Manchin has blown up the CEPP and he's against a carbon tax (clearly he's against anything that's going to hurt coal), meaning the kind of transformative climate change legislation we desperately need is going to require some republican support.

The last time we had a decent chance of passing large climate change legislation was 10 years ago. It's possible we might not have this chance for another 10 years. And by then it might be too late for the planet.

wavesounds··on Google, YouTube to prohibit ads and monetization on climate denial content
Do you think your professor would really care about monetizing his video? This rule seems to strike a good balance, you can still criticize the orthodoxy all you want but Google's not going to pay for it. It takes the incentive away from charlatans profiting off of misinformation.
wavesounds··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
Talk about making a mountain of a mole hill. There's a range of possible values that the science supports and he said a number in that range when asked what he thinks.
wavesounds··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
They weren't sure about airborne transmission from a-symptomatic people at the time. Delta variant has a higher r0 than alpha, so the herd immunity numbers change. Saying he's purposefully lying because the facts on the ground change is ridiculous.
wavesounds··on Apple closing down internal Slack channels where employees debate remote work

wavesounds··on Europe floods: At least 120 dead and hundreds unaccounted for
Nobody is arguing its "purely" caused by climate change but it seems pretty clear that climate change is making all of these things happen more frequently and intensely than they used to.
wavesounds··on SafeDollar ‘stablecoin’ drops to $0 following DeFi exploit on Polygon
It's because so far all of these crypto currencies use terrible technology that is destroying the planet. There's nothing "cutting-edge" about block chain, it was a neat idea 12 years ago but since then it's proven itself to be a completely shit database.
wavesounds··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Its $300 a week not a month. $300 a week is $7.50 an hour at 40 hours a week. People are getting this on top of normal unemployment. So it very well may be more than what some people were getting paid to work.
wavesounds··on The app that lets you pay to control another person's life
What if the app made you take a test to understand what you're voting for? (Yes I'm aware poll tests have been abused in the past to disenfranchise people, let's assume we can create an app with fair tests)

wavesounds··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
It's called a boycott. It's not a "monopolistic force" when they're many different companies ranging from lawyers and accountants to cloud providers and app stores.

Boycott: "withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest."

wavesounds··on Shamelessness as a Strategy (2019)
I think this confuses "Duty" with nationalism, it's peoples Duty to stop an unjust war. The Boy Scout oath says "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country". You could replace God with any moral belief system.

I think our sense of Duty started to dissolve sometime in the 80s with the idea that "Greed is good" and then continued in the 90s with a rise in apathy. Both of which are selfish ideas, selfishness is the opposite of Duty.

wavesounds··on Facebook's attempt to vilify Apple looks like sour grapes
Yeah currently $164 a year for a US user and growing [1]. What percentage of users would be willing to pay $13.67 a month? Probably not very many unfortunately. It's an order of magnitude more than what OP said he would to pay

wavesounds··on Apple TV Was Making a Show About Gawker. Then Tim Cook Found Out
I don't get how Apple being a tech company has anything to do with this. If it was NBC making the show and Gawker outed the CEO of NBC does the New York Times think that the NBC CEO would act differently?
wavesounds··on Data Broker Opt-Out List
The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) tasked with investigating the causes of the crisis reported in January 2011 that: "We had a 21st-century financial system with 19th-century safeguards.

The FCIC placed significant blame for the crisis on deregulation, reporting: "We conclude widespread failures in financial regulation and supervision proved devastating to the stability of the nation’s financial markets. The sentries were not at their posts, in no small part due to the widely accepted faith in the self-correcting nature of the markets and the ability of financial institutions to effectively police themselves."

wavesounds··on TikTok to challenge U.S. order banning transactions with the video app
American companies are blocked from doing business in China either by the great firewall, having to transfer intellectual property, having to give the government unfettered access to user data or by having to have Chinese ownership. Bytedance has no legs to stand on here.

wavesounds··on Snowden: Tech Workers Are Complicit in How Their Companies Hurt Society
As engineers in tech have way more power than we realize. Its not a coincidence that the biggest most successful tech companies also have some of the best engineers working there. It's the engineers who made those companies successful not the other way around.

Wherever you work you have a responsibility to make sure your skills are being used for something you support. If you can't convince the leadership at your company to do the right thing then you need to leave and stop helping them. Go work for their competitors who are doing the right thing. There's tons of companies who pay just as well and aren't bad for society or the planet.

wavesounds··on I'm resigning from my job at Facebook
Don't forget we are in the middle of a pandemic, it's not the easiest time to find a job.

Also I don't think it ads much to the conversation to try to minimize someones sacrifice, you don't know their personal situation, and even if its not that hard on them personally who cares, it's still a principled stand of where to invest ones time and energy.

wavesounds··on Germany's Coronavirus Death Rate Is Lower Than in Other Countries
If theres a silver lining to this pandemic hopefully it will make people realize the importance of having competent leaders and institutions.
wavesounds··on Lyft Announces Q1 Earnings
This is literally the top comment on every recently IPO'd companies earnings. "Why are they spending so much money, why aren't they profitable yet." It's like HN doesn't understand the purpose of going public is to raise money, and the reason you raise money is because you see growth opportunities that are worth spending money on instead of returning profits to investors.
wavesounds··on Smoke and Mirrors: How Snap and Pinterest Hide User Attrition
This is a hit piece. Why didn't she update her article with the results of Snaps Q1 earnings that came out later the day this was published? 190 DAU goes against her narrative of declining users
wavesounds··on Pinterest S-1
It's weird how HN has become so negative about every recent tech companies IPO. You would think this would be the one place on the internet where people would be excited and positive about this sort of thing. I don't get it, is it jealousy about missing the boat?
wavesounds··on Even years later, Twitter doesn’t delete direct messages
It's not disingenuous at all. Snapchat deletes all messages, photos and videos by default, either immediately after their received or within 24 hours.
wavesounds··on The Era of Easy Recycling May Be Coming to an End
Out of curiosity does anyone know of any startups in the trash/recycling space?
wavesounds··on [dead]
This is so typical of the tech press these days. They complain about the first version of something not being up to their standards and then write off the whole thing. It seems so typical of people who have never done the hard work of creating something new themselves. We should be applauding all innovators I just don't understand the negativity. Sure its not perfect, who cares? The next version will be better and the next version after that better again. I think they just feign outrage for clicks.
wavesounds··on A new way to make steel could cut 5% of CO2 emissions at a stroke
Another good example of how investing in NASA helps our economy by facilitating the discovery of new technology.
wavesounds··on Commuting by Bicycle is down?
My theory is that traffic is getting worse in most major cities as more and more people are choosing to live their. Having more cars on the road makes biking less and less safe therefore people fall into the "if you cant beat em join em" mentality.
wavesounds··on Wave After Wave of Garbage Hits the Dominican Republic
In a number of poorer regions in developing countries I've been too people don't have the capability or perhaps knowledge to properly dispose of garbage so it ends up on the side of the road, which eventually makes its way into rivers and the ocean.
