Was a physicist.

Was a dev.

Now a physicist.

was_a_dev··on Trilinear point splatting for real-time radiance field rendering
I was going to make this point, as I do agree.

However in a fast paced field such as this, timing is crucial. And all of these papers so far are technically pre-prints on the arxiv.

As an academic, nothing infuriates me more than the promise of code and/or data. There are valid reasons this happens, but the reality is such promise is quickly forgotten.

Even provided code is poorly documented and rarely works on a machine other than the author's.

One common phrase is.

"Data is available from the authors upon reasonable request"

Try doing that for any paper older than 18 months.

All it does it contribute to the replication crisis.

was_a_dev··on Generating Power on Earth from the Coldness of Deep Space
I think the direct electrical generation is a niche application and most likely a scientific curiosity.

The commercial application of space cooling sounds much more exciting as a way of cooling without electricity.

It would also be interesting if they could use the cooling effect to cool a working fluid and use that the run a turbine. Choose the correct working fluid that will expand at ambient. Such design may have higher energy density per area. And would work all year around.

was_a_dev··on Astronomers detect highest energy cosmic ray since 1991
Einstein's famous E=mc² equation is actually a special case of the general equation [1]

E²= (mc²)² + (pc)²

Where m is the rest mass of the particle (the mass measured when the particle is stationary relative to the observer) and p is the momentum of the particle.

Therefore when we discuss high-energy particles, we mean they have high-energy associated with their high momentum (velocity).

Typically the comsic rays are near-light speed protons. Although they maybe light nuclei.

was_a_dev··on ESA’s new Ariane 6 rocket passed a major full-scale rehearsal
Most folks don't realise that RocketLab is also more than just a launch provider. They have diversified into providing their own satellite platform, Photon. Which I think, in itself, is a innovative product for space.

It is the platform NASA is using for the upcoming ESCAPADE mission to Mars. And it was used for the CAPSTONE Lunar mission, for example.

was_a_dev··on Rise in people discovered dead and decomposed in UK raises concerns
Living in the UK, I only started to interact with my neighbours once we bought our house.

While renting, I was always surrounded by other people renting. People were more transient and the properties lacked gardens to promote to being outside long enough to see any neighbour.

In our last rental property, our upstairs neighbour changed five times in about 15 months. We gave up knowing who was who by the end.

> Newcomers to voice coding often ask why not use the NATO Phonetic Alphabet

> With one exception, all the NATO words have more than one syllable (e.g., November has three) and are not efficient for commands like the alphabet that you will use frequently

was_a_dev··on Auto industry executives admit electric vehicle plans are in jeopardy
What is the second-hand EV market going to look like? What does it currently look like?

My worry is buying an EV with a used battery - as the battery feels like the inevitable failure point

was_a_dev··on A theory that Mars lost its magnetic field and then its oceans (2022)
Even if it was lost rapidly, rapid would be on the order of 10,000 years.

That's a whole human history

was_a_dev··on 22-year-old builds chips in his parents' garage (2022)
I can't imagine the funding required either
was_a_dev··on Advent of Code 2023's new AI/LLM Policy
Being in the UK, I've never bothered with leaderboards either because of the timezoning.

I haven't even bothered with the private leaderboards as friends have varied commitments that still adds a time advantage to others.

was_a_dev··on Heat your house with a mechanical windmill (2019)
Driving a heat pump mechanically with a microhydro system would be interesting.

More consistent energy output paired with easy storage.

was_a_dev··on Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor LK-99 preprint revision 2
It is suggested that politics has come into play here as only three people can win a Nobel Prize.

I hope that, if this ends in a Nobel Prize, that "sportsmanship" comes into account

was_a_dev··on Semiconducting Transport in LK99 reproduction attempt
I think this would vary greatly on the field. This example of results is one of the better examples imo

If they had a RTAP superconductor in 1999. Industry would have bypassed the scientific community by now

was_a_dev··on New study suggests that lab-grown meat produces up to 25 times more CO2

Being a preprint, this is obviously neither peer reviewed nor vetted by a journal.

In this case, I cannot deduce what journal they plan on submitting to (if they plan to at all)

was_a_dev··on Reddit mods discuss forming a union and suing for back pay
I'd argue this isn't similar internship, while an internship is voluntary work, it is under an agreement between the "employer" and "employee"

In this case there is, at best, an implicit agreement. But moderators are under the same terms and conditions as all users.

Does that mean as a user, I can demand back pay for generating content on Reddit via posts and comments?
