wanderer_··on Google Bans Apps with Hidden Data-Harvesting Software
I guess now they have to ban Android...
wanderer_··on Ask HN: Do you watch streams (on Twitch, etc.)?
I've 'watched' streams of stuff like teardowns, but normally that's just skipping around to watch as it progresses. I just can't bring myself to devote that much time to one video - a timestamp of much longer than 10 minutes on a Youtube video is a pretty big deterrent for me.
wanderer_··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
(By "makes sense" I do not, in fact, really mean that it makes sense; more accurately, this should read "seems typical of a Chromebook").
wanderer_··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
Ah. This makes sense. In this case, I think a throwaway or a personal account will perform the same function, as long as it is not affiliated with the school system.
wanderer_··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
Oops, I had forgotten about that. I was doing a bit of ...research a while back to apply to my own school machine.
wanderer_··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
Another little push in the right direction: you'll have to go into developer mode to expose the shell and flip the write-protect bit.
wanderer_··on Tell HN: My kid's school installed spyware and I can't remove it
I would do the factory reset again and then not use that account anymore. If you want, you can create a new local-only account and then (this is the important part) sign in to the school Google Classroom on another browser. Install Firefox, Brave, something, and use it for the school account rather than Chrome. Chrome allows extensions installed to it to run in the background and manage the system, but another browser cannot.

Works fine for me....
wanderer_··on Can Grafana run Doom?
My money's on yes.

Oooh, good way to abstract out names from stories! Stolen for my own future use.
wanderer_··on Vanced was Malware all along
If it were true, it could be a situation like that of The Great Suspender extension.
wanderer_··on Oxide on My Wrist: Hubris on PineTime was the best worst idea
Devs are currently working on notifications, and you can help too if you are so inclined, but they aren't there yet. I am still on the BLE / GATT / ANCS learning curve, so I have not been much help.
wanderer_··on Oxide on My Wrist: Hubris on PineTime was the best worst idea
The pinetime can basically do anything you want it to, as long as you're willing to make it so. I'm wearing it on my wrist right now, but I have an iPhone and the support for it is not great. In terms of build quality, it's quite good, and the battery lasts for about a week. It's slimmer than an apple watch, which is a major plus for me. But if you have an iphone, step tracking and limited music control is all you'll get in terms of accessory use. You can always contribute, however, and there is a very active community working on the firmware in the github repo (https://github.com/InfiniTimeOrg/InfiniTime).

The thing that the PineTime does really well, however, is beat the price tag of basically every other smartwatch out there ($30). I'm not sure how chip-shortage prices might be affecting this though...

wanderer_··on Jokes that have made people laugh for thousands of years
Martial was a famous poet who wrote books of epigrams. He, while less prolific than Shakespeare, similarly invented a lot of common insults.

(For those who don't know, I'll save you a google: epigrams were short poems that were lighthearted and often made fun of people using dry classical humor.)

Well, here's this:

prostitution (noun): 1. ... 2. the unworthy or corrupt use of one's talents for personal or financial gain. (credit: oxford dictionary of English)

I am somewhat surprised that someone did not think to look for an archaic or disused definition already...

wanderer_··on Ask HN: Why aren't devs making desktop apps any more?
Intellectually, we know that they have to pay to develop it somehow - M$ is still a business. That doesn't help the rage that is instilled by the "free trial has ended" message.
wanderer_··on Ask HN: Why aren't devs making desktop apps any more?
The browser, the universal VM.
wanderer_··on Ask HN: Why aren't devs making desktop apps any more?
I think there are other possible motivations, too. Not to say that you are wrong (you aren't), and not that this necessarily applies to Reddit specifically, but there is something to be said for having your service's icon implanted on the user's homescreen, possibly being one of the first things they see every time they open their phone. This opens up having muscle-memory to open up your app, making it that much easier to hop on and start doomscrolling. Having an app also makes it easier to drive engagement using notifications.
wanderer_··on Our fundamental right to shame and shun the New York Times
While we're at it, let's just make an entirely new IP infrastructure.
wanderer_··on Launch HN: Reality Defender (YC W22) – Deepfake Detection Platform
So... that percentage sort of 'return type' allows the people using your service to decide how aggressive they want to be? Smart. It also could possibly turn your service into more of a tool and less of something that someone could blame incorrect results on.
wanderer_··on Lawsuit says Google discriminates against Black workers
Definitely both.
wanderer_··on Ask HN: How to make $1000/month on side projects? Any idea?
Heh. I would be a lot more help if this read: "How to spend $1000/month on side projects"...

wanderer_··on Lawsuit says Google discriminates against Black workers
This is sad. I would think that a company the size of and with the resources of Google would be able to police themselves for this sort of thing.
wanderer_··on Ask HN: Is Apple down?
I noticed a blip in iMessage earlier, but it sorted itself out before too long.
wanderer_··on Ask HN: Is your company considering inflation in this year's comp review cycle?
In very simple terms, if everyone is getting paid more, then all of the stores can price everything higher... and so on. It's a cycle.
wanderer_··on Ask HN: Is your company considering inflation in this year's comp review cycle?
It's simple. Inflation is driven by increasing the dollar amount for, well, everything. He is correct in saying that this is what drives inflation: If every single thing is worth 20% more, it's really just that the dollar is worth 17% less.

"Inflation" is shorthand for 'price inflation' - every single price and dollar amount goes up, and, when it happens too fast, can tear an economy apart (e.g. 1942 Berliners packing cash into wheelbarrows to go and buy bread).

EDIT: grammar
