vulcan01··on Same Stop: Life after 26 years as a programmer for Apple
Anecdotally true: when my non-technically-inclined parents ask me why I'm working on my personal projects, I vaguely mumble something about "it'll be good for my resume" and try to change the topic.

I definitely do not think these will benefit my resume in any way.

vulcan01··on US Air Force shoots down drone swarm with THOR microwave weapon
If you want to pick on a company for strange naming, Sony is a great choice. WH-1000XM3, WF-1000XM3, Xperia 1 III, etc.
vulcan01··on Apple busts iOS 17 leaker with spycraft ‘canary trap’
His sister shared the secret project with the "unauthorized person" (the tipster).
vulcan01··on Syncthing: A continuous file synchronization program
FWIW, I've been using syncthing for 3 years now and have never had any issues with git repo syncs.
vulcan01··on Mormons Make Great FBI Recruits
> Often, after a long career in the FBI, agents will join the Latter-day Saints’ Security Department

Why does a church have a security department, especially one that staffs so many people? The article states that most of them work desk jobs, which probably means they aren't running physical security at individual churches, so what kind of threats does the church overall face?

vulcan01··on Remove “This incident will be reported.” from user warnings
I have a small server that some of my friends have accounts on. When they accidentally (or not!) try to use sudo (often this happens with a "curl | sh" thing) I like to be informed.
vulcan01··on My high-flying life as a corporate spy who lied his way to the top
Why would they be fired, if they were one of the top 50 people in the bank? From a pure profit perspective, if this guy was that good, did it really matter if he was using 'sophisticated algorithms' or not?

(I may have misunderstood your first comment. If so, please let me know.)

vulcan01··on GitHub Copilot emits GPL code
Butterick filed a class-action lawsuit 5 months ago: https://githubcopilotlitigation.com/
vulcan01··on Why I’m using a keyboard phone in 2023
I believe the keyboard support in iOS is thorough due to the iPad Pro and its related keyboard accessory.
vulcan01··on Meme group on Discord is focus of uproar over leaked Pentagon documents
This comment is written in bad faith - generally on HN we try to take what people say at face value. They said they research far-right extremism professionally. The good-faith interpretation is that they do this as part of their job, as that is what "professionally" means.
vulcan01··on WordPerfect for Unix character terminals
That's not title case - you don't capitalize words such as a, the, of, etc. unless they are at the beginning of the title.
vulcan01··on NSA created online cybersecurity course with 100s of classes
This is classic HN: "This useful resource does not include $MY_PREFERRED_TECHNOLOGY, therefore it is bad."
vulcan01··on All travelers to the UK will need pre-authorization by 2025
Probably because people are willing to pay a small price (tourists and business travellers are cost-insensitive).
vulcan01··on Ask HN: How do you start over with 2FA after losing your phone?
Download, print, and store them in a safe or safe deposit box. It's not like people lose their phone often.
vulcan01··on Ford Hires 550 Former Argo.ai Engineers, Creates Latitude.ai
They probably worked together in the past. This kind of comment is pretty common on HN.
vulcan01··on The extensible vi layer for Emacs
There is this configuration: https://github.com/LGUG2Z/helix-vim

This switches most keybinds to be vi-like.

vulcan01··on Linux 6.2: The first mainstream Linux kernel for Apple M1 chips arrives
Correct, it is APFS since 10.12 or 10.13 (so, 6 or 7 macOS versions/years).
vulcan01··on Jira is awful, welcome to AJIR
That website is still up.
vulcan01··on NSA wooing thousands of laid-off Big Tech workers for spy agency's hiring spree
It's a shame you're being downvoted for this, especially when the reference (or the reference's author) is one of the more highly-upvoted suggestions on the yearly book recommendation thread on HN.
vulcan01··on My Controversial Opinion: Ventura Is Apple’s Worst macOS Yet
If you're on a laptop model, you use the laptop's keyboard or mouse. I believe that for desktop models, if there is a keyboard or mouse plugged in at startup, it does not prompt.
vulcan01··on Death of Korea's 'apartment king' leaves 100s in property purgatory
> It all works if real estate prices keep rising, if the owner can get one tenant to replace another without any vacancy, if the rules of the game remain the same and if the mastermind can manage the accounting nightmare of dealing in and keeping track of so much unsecured debt. It fails if any one of the many participants fails to play their part, or if any of the conditions change.

This sounds like a pyramid scheme, doesn't it?

s/tenant/investor

s/play their part/ask for their money back

vulcan01··on Liu Cixin's Technologies of the Future
> late Stephenson

Which Stephenson are you referring to?

vulcan01··on Natives in Tech asks Apache Software Foundation to change name
You have far more karma than required to vouch for a flagged post.
vulcan01··on Ask HN: Main things to consider when building an app for business/enterprise?
In that case, only using ANSI SQL will help (i.e. no vendor-specific queries).
vulcan01··on Stripe is about to refund €147k worth of payments to my all of my customers
On HN, it is generally considered polite to add a disclaimer to a post where you discuss your own company.
vulcan01··on $7M lost on Amazon inventory, then bankrupt
I'm not sure what the confusion is here. Capitalism is not anarchism. Capitalists generally recognize the value of contracts, do they not?
vulcan01··on Ask HN: Any good black Friday deals?
Slickdeals is the (American?) equivalent https://slickdeals.net/ .
vulcan01··on The Evolution of Scalable CSS
I don't think there's that option, but the page does work well with reader mode.
vulcan01··on Ask HN: Why is there no way to lower amber alert volume on headphones?
An Amber alert is an alert sent out by the local authorities in the US to all smartphones (and maybe radio? I'm too young to use a radio often) when a child is missing / suspected to be abducted.

A Silver alert is very similar and is sent out when an elderly person (esp. with memory issues) is missing.

vulcan01··on Qualcomm vs. Arm: The bizarro quotient just went off the scale
Arm was a joint venture between Acorn and Apple and another company whose name I forget. It's not unreasonable to think that Apple might have some special benefits due to that.
