Just do you know, when outsiders see you talking about "late-stage capitalism", they have the same reaction as if I started talking about the CIA dumping brain control chemicals in the water supply.
I'm getting more and more concerned that the US can't roll out any new infrastructure despite throwing billions of dollars at a problem. It's just embarrassing. California's handling of the high speed rail (especially the well documented corruption) was embarrassing. NYC's inability to stop shitwater from flooding their streets is embarrassing. Even more, nobody even attempts to correct the issue. The largest fire in california (2018 Camp Fire) killed about 100 people and was purely a result of mismanagement. Large parts of Texas are just crumbling and in "poor condition" according to white house assessments.
The worst part, for me? Nobody cares, nobody looks into it, and no one is held accountable. It's just a slow, gradual decline while we imagine things that would be nice, skim money off the economy to fund them, and then throw our hands up in the air and act surprised when the money catches on fire.
And this is why you don't get job advice on reddit or HN. You'll get unsolicited advice that you should quit your job because you mention you're trying to make your workplace better for other employees.
Incompetence is way more likely than intentional sabotage. It was probably just some guy in a suit demanding that they have everything that looks secure so it's not a repeat of the NDS, while giving no time to actually implement anything properly.
It depends on the doctor. Seeing as some doctors give them too freely and others would rather let patients suffer, I propose we just save time and use a roulette table. It's transparent, easy, and you know exactly why you're been awarded or deprived of pain medication.
This may be true, but if it is the canadian journal of philosophy is doing their reputation no favors by publishing the "answering machine paradox". Paradox. Paradox. That's a funny word, isn't it? Paradox.
Funny you said "I don’t feel too sorry for Russians or people who pretend to be from LCOL countries to save a buck." and then decided to change it. At least it was more honest before.
The system we have with SSNs are just fundamentally flawed. It's like a password you can't choose or change, that is also in a million databases (in plaintext) and regularly gets stolen and resold. We have better systems for authentication and we're stuck treating this number like it has any value at all.
How do people even think of these things? You're not a computer. You have the ability to intuit when people are not talking about some stupid edge case that literally never happens.
I can't imagine learning German or some similar language and complaining that their words aren't clear just because I don't speak German fluently enough.
Mailing your life savings to another country must have been nerve wrecking. He was risking dying in poverty after he couldn't do his job anymore. People still do that now, but they don't send you anything back.
"Pfff..."? You're getting a little too defensive over someone not liking your language. You're just asserting that the language is easy to read and saying that anyone who disagrees just hasn't read it. This is some sad fanboy behavior that I don't like to see.
Nobody is measuring "total thermal output". That would dumb, because like you said that just corresponds 1:1 to battery usage. They're measuring how hot the device gets and how good it is at moving heat away from the critical parts of the device.
The main selling point of this is that it has AI support, including microsoft recall specifically under the "Copilot+" branding. I am so ridiculously sick of AI being shoved into everything and microsoft's attempt at ridiculously intrusive spyware was the last straw for me. If I'm going to pay $900 for a computer, I might as well just get a real graphics card anyway.
This is a misunderstanding of the purpose of teachers in the US. They exist to babysit students while the parents work, and any learning that gets done is a bonus. You can't replace babysitting with online classes.
Then anything you plan is doomed from the start. If companies start slipping cyanide into their food it would take at least 20 years for people to stop buying it. Getting everyone to simply do your thing while they're busy with their own life is a fool's errand.
It depends on how illegal "illegal" it is, too. Illegal doesn't mean criminal, and even then, companies do plenty of things that are normally criminal and they get away with a small fine.
If that happens, I wonder if future generations will believe us when we insist that wasn't the intention; We just wanted a helpful AI that takes pictures of what you're doing every 5 seconds in case we forgot what chinese food place we like.
I suspect that there's a risk of psychological harm when people are exposed to shadow banning. Having to constantly ask yourself "Am I real? Can other people see me?" is not healthy or normal behavior, but after being shadowbanned on a particular site you start having to do it constantly.
It may be different at this scale, but in my experience fast-ish redundant file storage has always been extremely expensive even at lower storage sizes, while getting a 100 Gbps line is relatively cheap.
What would you rather they do? Let themselves be stolen from? Personally hunt down the people that wronged them? That's what happened when certain gangs lost money on crypto. This is a lame "gotcha" whether you like crypto or not.
