vsuperpower2020··on Anti-aging molecule successfully restores multiple markers of youth
Great, now communists are going after longer lifespans again.
vsuperpower2020··on Open-LLM performances are plateauing
A lot of companies were betting billions on exponential growth, or at least hoping that 2024 wouldn't be when AI performance starts to converge. Language models are still glorified chatbot that can't be taken seriously, and are more of a liability than anything useful. Remember Air Canada being on the hook for the incorrect information its chatbot gave? They tried to contest it, lost, and removed the bot from their site.
vsuperpower2020··on Bytecode Breakdown: Unraveling Factorio's Lua Security Flaws
Code practices? Factorio is one of the most well programmed, stable, and consistent piece of software I've ever seen. It's almost a shame to see skilled people work in games because of how desperately other fields need people who are good at programming.
vsuperpower2020··on Bytecode Breakdown: Unraveling Factorio's Lua Security Flaws
When you're talking about security, adding a bunch of config flags for users is never a good idea. Most users aren't going to understand what it does, and like others mentioned, there's too many reasons to turn it on.
vsuperpower2020··on Python grapples with Apple App Store rejections
Okay?
vsuperpower2020··on Python grapples with Apple App Store rejections
This is usually caused by their machine learning virus scanner. For some reason it determines basically anything that you compile yourself to be a virus. Can't miss a virus if you call everything a virus, I guess.
vsuperpower2020··on Misconceptions about loops in C
I never understood anyone who used such strong language like "beauty" when talking about something mundane like recursion. I suspect it's just in-group language like how a cult understands the meaning of their own words, while to outsiders it would appear nonsensical. I have seen other groups appropriate the word "beauty" too, like people who chronically overeat.
vsuperpower2020··on Uber Is Locking Out NYC Drivers Mid-Shift to Lower Minimum Pay
Miraculously, the US has managed to achieve positive gdp growth and a rapidly declining standard of living.
vsuperpower2020··on Uber Is Locking Out NYC Drivers Mid-Shift to Lower Minimum Pay
You're very confident about this, aren't you?
vsuperpower2020··on LINQPad – The .NET Programmer's Playground
I don't bother making anything run on linux unless it's meant to run as a service. It's just not worth the time and trouble to test it on multiple operating systems, probably with different libraries, just for what is a very vocal minority.
vsuperpower2020··on I am using AI to drop hats outside my window onto New Yorkers
Ahh, the constant war between obviously bullshit articles and comments who didn't even look at the article they're commenting on.
vsuperpower2020··on Ruby: A great language for shell scripts
Why do you choose to write in a snarky way? Why does that make you glad? Why does this make you energetic?
vsuperpower2020··on Spending 3 months investigating a 7-year old bug and fixing it in 1 line of code
For me, "senior" just counts the amount of time they've been doing something. If someone isn't very good at something after putting ten thousand hours into it, they just might work at microsoft.
vsuperpower2020··on Proposed ballot measure to raise corporate taxes, give every Oregonian $750/year
I'll take the free money but I fully expect to have to move to another state once this proves unsustainable. Washington is close and has no state income tax.
vsuperpower2020··on U.S. home prices have far outpaced paychecks. See what it looks like
That's part of what makes it greed. People regularly lose money in the pursuit of more money. I have seen houses go unrented for ages because owners refuse to accept that their worthless shack in the middle of nowhere is not worth what it used to be.
vsuperpower2020··on U.S. home prices have far outpaced paychecks. See what it looks like
Where did you hear that house prices are expensive because the "earth is full"? Did you notice that housing prices doubled and almost tripled in the last 4 years alone?
vsuperpower2020··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
Alright, now that you've got your big boy pants on, I have a bridge to sell you.
vsuperpower2020··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
It seems like almost half the discussion on this godforsaken website is midwits picking specific words to argue over for no apparent reason. My favorite activation phrases is "AIs can hallucinate and make mistakes."
vsuperpower2020··on DJI ban passes the House and moves on to the Senate
No doubt.
vsuperpower2020··on DJI ban passes the House and moves on to the Senate
I'm not going to miss drones. Too many drone operators abused them to violate peoples expectation of quiet or privacy, or to harass animals, and were ignored or outright supported by other users. Laws restricting specific areas or behavior are extremely hard to enforce compared to an outright ban.

The most common defense was violating your privacy wasn't technically illegal. Well, now that it is going to become illegal, don't expect my support. This should serve as a reminder to people with niche hobbies not to make everyone hate you.

vsuperpower2020··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I just don't understand why you're using your own time to defend predatory business models that inevitably screw over the user. You can't just sit on an old piece of software and expect it to work forever because the companies do not want that. I know you're not being malicious but we have so many receipts of this happening. People have plenty of reasons to not want to support companies doing this, and to be wary when they move in this direction.

10 years down the line their DRM stops working because you're on locked down, ancient hardware and they don't want to support your OS anymore. Steam is relatively benevolent and now there are games you bought and paid for that require a version of windows that steam no longer supports. Maybe they just do what autodesk did, revoke your perpetual license, and tell you to buy a subscription?

Maybe you need to replace your motherboard and it counts as a "new" computer, and it no longer runs on. Maybe they take away your ability to reinstall it on another device because offline authorization no longer is enabled, and their online services don't support your old license. Both of these were done by reason studio. I hope you didn't buy a $400 perpetual license and expect it to work until the ice age.

Maybe they change the ToS like blizzard, and you now have to agree to the new ToS to continue using the software you bought and paid for?

Maybe the company switches to a subscription model, and then updates the ToS to say you owe them an indeterminate amount of money that you never agreed to, like the whole unity fiasco?

I am so sick of people pretending the free market of software isn't rigged against the user. Every single company screws us over and I hate to see people defend it because they think you can just opt out of it.

vsuperpower2020··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I'm glad there are people willing to pay for the development of software so I'm not stuck using GIMP. It's actually a good thing when people get paid for their work, the issue here is that adobe's predatory pricing models and making it difficult to cancel.
vsuperpower2020··on Building SimCity: How to put the world in a machine
I think Monopoly is awful, and I think the vocal minority of people who like it are obnoxious as hell.
vsuperpower2020··on Creativity has left the chat: The price of debiasing language models
You think this has been going on forever? You probably don't realize the shift in professionality because you experienced the degradation in real time.
vsuperpower2020··on Why "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" matters (2011)
Weasel words. Considered a classic by who? And why would being an "intro text at MIT" mean it's good for someone who is already experienced? If anything, that should show it's not worth his time.
vsuperpower2020··on Why "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" matters (2011)
Do you really need this explained? It's a 600 page technical book and people have a limited amount of time to sort through everything that exists.
vsuperpower2020··on North Dakota voters just approved an age limit for congressional candidates
The voting age used to be 21 in the US and people got mad after being repeatedly drafted into pointless wars by congress. If you're going to die in vietnam or a random hole in europe, at least you can vote on it now.
vsuperpower2020··on North Dakota voters just approved an age limit for congressional candidates
This is not really something written in the constitution, just something that the justices vividly hallucinated into existence in 95. If it actually comes up again, it'll probably be overturned.
vsuperpower2020··on North Dakota voters just approved an age limit for congressional candidates
People can't really be trusted to make good decisions, so the current idea of democracy seems to be to at least remove some bad decisions.
vsuperpower2020··on Tesla's FSD – A Useless Technology Demo
Sounds less like they're actually upset about their purchase, and more like they're afraid to be bullied. It's a good strategy. I'm all for making people apologize and pre-emptively justify making decisions I don't like.
