voodooranger··on SEC Asks Manhattan Federal Court to Hold Elon Musk in Contempt
i believe elon’s argument is that the offending tweet didn’t need approval because he believed that he was just restating a projection made on the previous earnings call
voodooranger··on IBM acquires Red Hat
simple software that’s easy to use is anathema to companies like red hat. to the extent you can keep software simple, you won’t need red hat, pivotal, etc. these support companies have every incentive to make you dependent on them. think about that next time you reach for one of the technologies they peddle.
voodooranger··on Air India Express 737 Hits ILS, Damages Wall on Departure, Flies for 4 Hours
the cargo hold of a 737 is indeed pressurized https://aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/8252/are-cargo-...
voodooranger··on US breaks up IRS phone scam operation
The workaround I used for this was Google Voice. I put the Google Voice number on my resume and in settings told it to use my own GV number as the caller id. If I saw a call coming from the GV number I knew it was a response to my resume. For some reason my GV number doesn’t attract scammers.
voodooranger··on Elon Musk emails employees about 'extensive and damaging sabotage' by employee
The code review systems I’m familiar with give you the opportunity to submit code that’s different than what was approved. The assumption in these systems is that the developer is acting in good faith.
voodooranger··on Airbus and Boeing are exploring the viability of electric planes
If the landing speeds are the same, a heavier aircraft requires a longer landing roll. But a heavier aircraft also requires a higher landing speed. Those two phenomena compound.
voodooranger··on Review: Tesla Model 3 lives up to hype
The Model 3 also has some hardware buttons.
voodooranger··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
I heard center core boostback burn shutdown
voodooranger··on SpaceX payload code-named Zuma failed to reach orbit after Sunday launch
I’ve never worked on satellites but isn’t the engineering not lost at all? What’s lost is all the manufacturing and verification that went into this one copy. Wouldn’t manufacturing a second copy be like an order of magnitude less effort/cost? Or is the cost of a satellite mostly just manufacturing?
voodooranger··on SpaceX payload code-named Zuma failed to reach orbit after Sunday launch
Yeah, those foreign spies will never catch on to this ruse — not like us intrepid HN commenters.
voodooranger··on New California law allows liquor companies to pay for free rides
I went to a professional soccer game in a large stadium in South America a couple of years ago in the middle of summer. It was really hot and all I wanted was water, but you couldn’t buy water at the concession stand. The only drink they offered was Coke.
voodooranger··on Max Howell, author of Homebrew, on being rejected for a job at Google
I’ve never worked at Google but my read on them is that they’re an algorithm company, not a product company. They tend to hire algorithm nerds and pass on folks who, like Max Howell, can design and build useful products. As a result, their core, algorithm based, functionality is successful, but they fail at new product design over and over, creating and retiring flawed products ad infinitum.
voodooranger··on Ask HN: High functioning alcoholism – anyone?
I was a high functioning alcoholic, drinking a six pack of beer per weeknight (programming by day for a successful company). On weekends, I would keep an eye on the clock and wouldn’t start drinking until noon.

Looking back, I realize that I could hardly function without it. I was hiding scotch in the closet and taking occasional swigs in secret just to “get by”.

One day, I went to a new doctor for one thing and ended up leaving with a prescription for an antidepressant because of a questionnaire he asked me to fill out. The effects of the antidepressant were not subtle at all. Suddenly, I had no more need for alcohol. Cheap wine tasted bad. I could still have a drink, but I didn’t need it to function.

That was ten years ago and I’m still on antidepressants. I still drink, and sometimes to excess, but I don’t need it to function. There’s a huge difference.

I would strongly recommend a visit to a doctor or psychiatrist if you feel like you’re addicted. You may be trying to self-medicate your clinical depression.

voodooranger··on Amazon recalls eclipse glasses
Never buy any Apple product from Amazon. I've been burned several times. Didn't realize it until I had already bought several products.
voodooranger··on Jefferies gives IBM Watson a Wall Street reality check
Watson, is that you?
voodooranger··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
The article forgot to mention that the California prison guards union bankrolls most California politicians. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Correctional_Peac...
voodooranger··on America’s Cars Are Getting Faster and More Efficient
The huge stride in efficiency recently has been made possible by direct injection. Engines no longer have to work hard to pull intake air through a mostly closed butterfly valve. Attributing this advancement to govt regulation is preposterous. Just as regardless of whether govt had mandated faster processors, industry would have created them anyway.
voodooranger··on On Campuses Far From China, Still Under Beijing’s Watchful Eye
Not sure that the mouthpiece of the ruling family of Qatar is a reputable source for anything, much less any topic involving Israel.
voodooranger··on I am an Uber survivor
I consider the HN community to be one of the most thoughtful I've found on the web, yet am stunned by how quickly a righteous mob is formed based on an anonymous, cartoonish, and IMO barely plausible account of what it's like to work for a large US tech company.

Having spent years working at multiple SV tech companies, where even the slightest tinge of a racist or sexist affront would land you in an office in front of HR and a company lawyer, I find this account to be very difficult to believe. Slanty eye joe? Please.

We don't know if this is a (poorly written) attempt to sink Uber (which I don't happen to care for) by someone with a short position and an evening to spare, or if it has been penned by an employee with a grudge.

Please have some credulity before parading your #deleteuber hashtags and morally superior posturing so the world can marvel at how virtuous you are. There has never been a more evil force in the world than an outraged, self-righteous mob inflamed by twisted anecdotes.

And yes, I've resorted to creating a throwaway account, fully expecting the flagging and down-voting groupthink brigade to be in force. If there's a shameful story here, it's more likely this disturbing human phenomenon, not an anonymous blog post, the veracity of which we know nothing about.
