voldacar··on Who needs the Metaverse? Meet the people still living on Second Life
>HiFi horrified Second Life content creators. It downloads assets from HTTP. There's no grid. There's no central asset server. There are no mandatory user accounts. So anything you sell can be quickly copied, hosted wherever, and duplicated with complete impunity. SL will kick you off the grid if you misbehave, but HiFi was made in such a way there was no grid to ban people from.

That sounds amazing. I had no idea something like this existed. I never encountered anyone mentioning it on HN, reddit, discord, etc. Maybe marketing was also an issue for them?

What specifically did you do to get an MRI quickly? Your personal doctor didn't want to give you one? Or the hospital/MRI place didn't want to give you one?

what attacks are you specifically referring to here, other than kicking them off the site?

voldacar··on Own-goal football (2022)
It's bold to assume that politics is about policy design.
voldacar··on X.org vs. Wayland Linux Gaming Performance for Nvidia GeForce and AMD Radeon
To me, screen tearing is if anything good since it indicates that the pixels on the monitor are seeing the most recent data from the GPU at all times. I think the people behind wayland just don't care about my use case.

voldacar··on Windows XP Activation: Game Over
I see, thanks. I'm a windows noob but I have to install it soon on some VMs and I was dreading doing that.

voldacar··on The Rimac Nevera Just Shattered Pretty Much Every Acceleration Record
If your velocity is over 400 kph and you just slam on the brakes and keep them on 100% until the car stops, does that not just totally destroy the brakes, maybe even melting them? (The kinetic energy of a 2300 kg object moving at 410 kph is over 50 gigawatt-hours)

Edit: I made a typo in wolfram alpha :]

Asbestos shouldn't be compared to leaded gasoline imo. It's quite safe and inert if you don't physically disturb it.
voldacar··on Fairbuds XL review: noise-cancelling headphones you can fix
I've had a ton of old headphones and I've never seen something like a 5 pin DIN connector. The old IBM keyboards do use a 5 pin DIN though.
voldacar··on Fairbuds XL review: noise-cancelling headphones you can fix
By "huge old school connectors" I assume you mean the 1/4 inch TRS connector? Which is still totally normal on non-cheap headphones?
voldacar··on Baltimore sues Hyundai, Kia over spike in car thefts
Has it occurred to you that different countries, and different groups of people within those countries, might have different rates of criminal behavior?
voldacar··on Second Thoughts on James Burnham (1946)
It seems that many of the predictions are at least somewhat true, or are becoming truer with time, though some of them are too vague to assign a truth value. Whether they happen faster or more slowly than he predicted is not really relevant to me.
voldacar··on The New York hotel destination fee scam (2020)
I don't get how this crap doesn't just fall under fraudulent advertising. The price of x is y iff (I give you x or more dollars -> you give me y).
voldacar··on Second Thoughts on James Burnham (1946)
>It was only after the Soviet régime became unmistakably totalitarian that English intellectuals, in large numbers, began to show an interest in it. Burnham, although the English russophile intelligentsia would repudiate him, is really voicing their secret wish: the wish to destroy the old, equalitarian version of Socialism and usher in a hierarchical society where the intellectual can at last get his hands on the whip.

This is an interesting insight. It seems to apply to Klaus Schwab / the NGO-academic-media complex pretty accurately.

voldacar··on Rapamycin: The unlucky history of an anti-aging drug
Interesting stuff, glad to see that the research is continuing in this area. I'm thinking about experimenting with topical alagebrium just to see if it does anything. I recall a study in mice that found a very significant effect on skin wrinkles in aged animals.

And it's lipofuscin, I mistyped it. Basically oxidized junk molecules that never seem to get broken down and just accumulate within the cell with age. Interestingly, piracetam seems to have a positive effect on this in rodent brains.

voldacar··on Rapamycin: The unlucky history of an anti-aging drug
Is there anything in the works that can break down lipofuscein or advanced glycation endproducts? Those always seem under-discussed.

voldacar··on U.S. Hits Z-Library with New Domain Name Seizures
I would assume that the NSA runs enough TOR nodes to correlate traffic from one side of the network to the other side at least a decent percentage of the time. I would also assume that they have a realtime view of the number of bytes entering or leaving any datacenter.
voldacar··on U.S. Hits Z-Library with New Domain Name Seizures
They can just do traffic correlation.
voldacar··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
Look into a suspension design like Thorens or AR. You can stomp on the floor, strike the platform supporting the turntable with a hammer, etc and it won't skip.
voldacar··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
Vinyl isn't about crackle or warmth. Good vinyl rigs are usually not warm. It's about the fact that vinyl physically cannot support a super compressed mix.
voldacar··on What is the minimal polynomial of a matrix?
It's not really obscure. This is undergrad linear algebra material
