voldacar··on The Fermat's Last Theorem Project
Why post this? This appears to be the writings of a crank.
voldacar··on LCD displays still don't match the responsiveness of clunky CRT screens (2019)
I don't see how you do a fair comparison. How do you even drive a CRT with a modern graphics card? Presumably you have some sort of digital to analog converter box, but wouldn't that add a touch of latency and defeat the purpose of the CRT?
voldacar··on The Great Oxygenation Event
Why is this flagged?
voldacar··on Honduras Ratchets Up Battle with Crypto-Libertarian Investors
I'm not on a team. I have never been to Honduras and have no strong feelings about either side. The whole article is just a journalist describing a conflict between two groups of humans, while constantly using morally and emotionally negative language against one group and never sharing their perspective, while doing the opposite for the other group. This journalist doesn't even accurately describe the origin of the conflict, which the top comment here does. It's a fun mental exercise to read the article and count sheer number of Russell conjugations.

This is not the kind of document you write to inform your reader about the state of the world.

This was a shockingly biased and information-sparse article. Really disappointing
voldacar··on Story of Vitamin D Toxicity (2022)
Would you struggle to believe that I took 50k IU daily for over a year with no side effects? Or that others have accidentally taken significantly more than that without issue? With vitamin D, absorption varies a lot between individuals. And the recommended doses that people frequently throw around are generally just a low-ish dose that is guaranteed not to be harmful. This misleads people into thinking that such a dose is the upper bound on the set of non-harmful doses, which is not even remotely true. Honestly I find it shocking that this woman developed hypercalcemia at 5k IU daily, the only explanation for this is that she has an unusually high absorption.

Do pull ups. Much more fun and satisfying than push ups

The root problem is that somebody is entering your house and stealing your car

>Strategies like Tit-for-Tat (TFT) are context-sensitive and not universally "optimal."

Of course. Hence why I didn't claim it to be universally optimal. All I'm saying is that your willingness to defect against defectors should always be non-zero, just to keep the players in line who start out with a higher predisposition towards defecting.

The noisiness of the real world should probably bias us more in the direction of cooperation, to avoid a cascade of defection as you mention, but a player who only cooperates will get taken advantage of regardless of the precise details of the game. Some amount of this dynamic can be seen currently in the relationship between western companies and the Chinese state, a relationship that is currently very different from the relationship between Chinese companies and the rest of the world.

It is also generally true that the longer the game, the more defectors suffer.

>an eye for an eye doesn't end well

Actually in most games that are played repeatedly, the optimal strategy is to cooperate with cooperators and defect against defectors.

Even if this is correct (which it probably is) it doesn't matter because bch is worthless because it doesn't have the name bitcoin. Whoever controls bitcoin core controls the meaning of the word "bitcoin" so if the bch people never find a way to wrest back control from the blockstream people then this whole thing is just irrelevant. History is written by the victors, etc
voldacar··on Breaking BFT: Quantifying the cost to attack Bitcoin and Ethereum
It's probably proportional to log(number of people looking at the source code) since the parts of the source code that people tend to look at are not uniformly distributed.

I don't think many worlds is strong enough, since it still doesn't say anything about why anything exists to begin with. You need something like the principle of plenitude.

It seems like over the past several years the words "risk" and "harm" have been redefined to mean almost anything. Am I crazy? If not, what's driving this?

I wonder how out of the whole space of ideas, these ones became so well optimized to reproduce in the academic fitness landscape. I guess it has to do with the fact that if you publicly display allegiance to these ideas, your power and status tend to increase? But how did that come to be the case? Who was patient zero and what enabled the early transmission of these memes when they weren't yet able to bestow status? We need some kind of epidemiological perspective. It would be so fascinating to see what future people will write about this period

voldacar··on Tastes are a point in space
Very interesting. But at the top of the square, the boundary curve should shift to the right as left wing ideas become dominant among the ultra rich or high status. This "high + low vs middle" phenomenon can slightly be seen in the second figure, so I'm not sure why it isn't remarked on.
