vlisivka··on Advanced Bash Scripting
Because I can. Sometimes - yes, sometimes - no, but why not? No, I am fine with Linux. Yes, I dislike python.

I hope, it is temporary problem. ;-)

vlisivka··on Advanced Bash Scripting
Shell is Lingua Franca for system administrators.
vlisivka··on Advanced Bash Scripting
I wrote large bunch of software in shell, so I have habit to use strict mode ("set -ue"), so shell scripts are much safer.

I write scripts like large programs from scratch: decomposition, error handling, proper logging, unit testing, packaging, etc.

I wrote my own library with few useful modules, which is designed for strict mode (bash-modules on assembla), which I recommend to use even for trivial programs.

I have no problems with bash.

vlisivka··on Why people irrationally reject cleaned sewer water, and how to change their mind
If recycled water will be passed back to producer, then cycle will be created. Cycles are vital for life.

If a virus will find way to bypass all filters and return back to human body, then we will have huge problem.

vlisivka··on Robots Don't Complain or Demand Higher Wages or Kill Themselves...
What we do with homeless dogs? History says - convert them to eunuchs.
vlisivka··on Why are programmers afraid of not using semicolons in JavaScript?
No, WE are avoiding Python, Ruby and CoffeScript.

If you want good example, say "shell script" instead.

vlisivka··on Why are programmers afraid of not using semicolons in JavaScript?
I have habit to place something at the end of sentence _._ I learned that in school _._

vlisivka··on United States loses AAA credit rating from S&P
Disproportion between givers and takers of money makes democracy weak at this. In democratic country, bigger and poorer group can always take some money out of smaller and richer group.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Income_Taxes_By_Country.sv... - all top countries are democratic.

vlisivka··on Black economic gains reversed in Great Recession
Sorry for my bad English. I am Ukrainian.

There is no such thing as "money for people". Money is used to account wealth, which is created by people.

If you are producing something, you can increase production or you can increase count ("money"). You propose to increase count.

vlisivka··on Hi, I’m a UX Developer - You’re a what?
Developer - How application will work?

Designer - How application will look?

UX - How application will feel?

vlisivka··on Automate your application's development environment with Guard
It looks like reinvention of incron.
vlisivka··on Failed entrepreneur, broke, unemployed, now taking care of aging parents. Help.
Keep smile on the face 24x7. It helps.

[Edit]

Emotions are controlling our bodies. But is works in opposite direction too. If you will keep smile on your face, you will send clear message to your body: "Everything is fine", so your head will start to produce ideas. You will notice huge difference after about two weeks.

BTW:

My situation is worser than your.

vlisivka··on Ada Outperforms Assembly: A Case Study
Typical success story:

We wrote program in language X and then rewrote it in language Y, so Y is better language than X, because our program is much better after rewrite.

vlisivka··on Google Code Jam 2011 Language Popularity
Wow - five coders use bash as their favorite language (including me :) ).
vlisivka··on Bill Gates On Nuclear Energy: Compared To Coal, It Is Still Safer
If we will blow up our planet by huge bomb, it might be even safer (in deaths by TWh, one of the few honest ways of comparing the risks).
vlisivka··on Google’s secret perk? A private hackerspace
My brother lost two fingers trying to stop rotating part of powered off machine by bare hand 25 years ago.
vlisivka··on Researchers explain why bicycles balance themselves
> They built a bicycle with two small wheels, each matched with a counter-rotating disk to eliminate the gyro effects

...to double gyro effects... or I missed something?

Two conter-rotating disks will compensate each other, BUT they must be perfectly aligned, is not?

In their bicycle, upper disk produces about 2x of gyro effect comparing to lower disk gyro effect, because it moves with about 2x larger amplitude comparing to lower disk at same incline, thus we still have about 2x-1x=1x gyro effect.

They should try their system on skates with two tiny blades instead of wheels.

PS.

Sorry for my English - I am Ukrainian.

PPS. System need to spent some energy to restore vertical alignment of inclined body.

Thus they need to add small incline to bicycle and then find where motion energy is spent by bicycle to restore vertical alignment. If bicycle will unable to restore vertical alignment then it is not stable.

vlisivka··on Ask HN: What are your side projects?
bash-modules - various additional modules for bash: http://trac.assembla.com/bash-modules/

image segmentation - put your coins, stamps, labels on contrast background (orange, turquoise, etc.), scan it, then let script to remove background and extract each image: http://vlisivka.pp.ua/uk/node/76

SPM (source package manager) - meta-meta-programming system, with goal to automatically create and keep up to date large and complex programming systems.

(no name) - complex ajax apps which are independent from back-end, e.g. same AJAX frontend works fine without backend (with sample data), or with couchdb, PHP, java, perl, javascript, etc. backends. (evently + couchapp)

etc.

Me. I leaved my job today. :-)
vlisivka··on Dramatic escalation in Japan (Fukushima Nuke Plant)
You are mismatched statistic with risk analysis. I asking for summary of risks multiplied by their effects.

PS. If something will blow up our Earth, it will be even safer than nuclear energy! (If we calculate number of deaths per TWh).

vlisivka··on AT&T Cracking Down on Free Tethering via Jailbroken iPhones
It is same in many other countries too, just because business phones are used much more often. It also hard to reuse such phone number, which is listed in many places: it will be "hot" for years.

Now, it is time to validate your home landline phone. Are you really doing no business over it? ;-)

vlisivka··on AT&T Cracking Down on Free Tethering via Jailbroken iPhones
Yeah, it is trivial to analyze traffic of somebody else when you are working in FBI with court order...
vlisivka··on AT&T Cracking Down on Free Tethering via Jailbroken iPhones
I agree - phone companies must intercept your phone calls and your internet traffic and charge extra money when you use it for business. Excellent suggestion, thank you!
vlisivka··on AT&T Cracking Down on Free Tethering via Jailbroken iPhones
I will use VPN or HTTPS proxy and will sue you if you will use that information for non-technical purposes.
vlisivka··on Where the Unix philosophy breaks down
We can handle objects in CSV/TSV format with commands sort, cut, join, paste, awk, perl, python, etc.

We can handle XML objects with commands xml_grep, xmlpath, xmlpatterns, perl, python, js (JavaScript has builtin support for XML/XPath), etc.

JSON format in new, but we can handle it with js (native format), perl, python. CouchDB already uses JSON over pipe to communicate with tools.

vlisivka··on Where the Unix philosophy breaks down
> Piping the output of a simple shell command to another shell command is easy. But as tasks become more complex, more and more work goes into preparing the output of one program to be the input of the next program. Users want to be able to do more in each program to avoid having to switch to another program to get their work done.

I see no logic here. Can anybody explain that?

vlisivka··on Dramatic escalation in Japan (Fukushima Nuke Plant)
Show me numbers, please.

Calculate, how many lives are already saved and will be saved in future by nuclear reactors in comparison to other sources of energy. Calculate how many lives will be lost in worstests scenarios. Multiple number by probability and sum up.

For example:

* nuclear reactor can save 1000 lives per year in 100 years of it life with 0.9999 probability;

* in worstest case, with 0.0001 probability, it can kill 10000 humans per year in 1000 years.

Result: 1000⋅100⋅0,9999 + −10000⋅1000⋅0,0001 = 98,99E3

0,0001 probability is too optimistic - we already have Chernobyl and few other smaller nuclear disasters while number of nuclear stations is much smaller than 1K.
