vletal··on Gitfs: Version Controlled File System
The sentence at the very top of the GH repo reads

> Virtual File System for Git: Enable Git at Enterprise Scale

Does it sound any similar to what this particular project tries to tackle?

vletal··on Gitfs: Version Controlled File System
VFS for Git solves the issue of having gigantic bloated monorepos used by thousands of devs, making sure user efficiently downloads only what is needed for him.

This is basically Git checkout with an autocommit feature, making sure your grandma will be able to do check grammar in your thesis without teaching her how to Git.

vletal··on Benefits of Not Using an IDE
There has been a great surge of ebikers among people working in food delivery services around Prague last year. Before that most of the guys used regular bikes.
vletal··on Janet Programming Language
And their buddy CPP.

You can do stuff like listing top K trending anti gov memes past day and blacklisting them. Thats definitely a content.
vletal··on SoundStream: An End-to-End Neural Audio Codec
You need to take into consideration the complexity. Counterstrike has very tiny set of possible actions you can take. Compare that to the space of things one can say.

A NN is going to fail on that at least as missereably as linear interpolation fails in CS.

vletal··on SoundStream: An End-to-End Neural Audio Codec
It's not difficult to propagate gradients while translating an image. Learning "pick a 8x8 patch from (145,17) apply X to it and translate it by (4,-8)" from data is on different level, is not it?

The premise was using e2e learning to avoid patent issues. I am sure that with some preprocessing you can plug a NN inside the deciding process and learn very meaningful stuff.

vletal··on SoundStream: An End-to-End Neural Audio Codec
Have you ever played a counterstrike with a lagging network? Observe the teammates running into walls and such. That's what the conversation would sound like.
vletal··on SoundStream: An End-to-End Neural Audio Codec
Since the h265 relies heavily on operations which are not easily differentiable, such as translation of patches of images, together with a pretty complicated binary format, I'd be pretty amazed if the NN actually learned anything meaningful at all.
vletal··on Show HN: Hookdeck – An infrastructure to consume webhooks
From time to time I write a quick & dirty hooker.py. A flask based server just for this purpose. I'm sure I'm not alone to name like that.
vletal··on My small revenge on Apple
I'm usually exposing my email address while using Apple ID. When I'm logging from non Apple devices I want to be able to log using Facebook or Google and recover my account for this very reason.
vletal··on Past Performance is Not Indicative of Future Results (2020)
My first thought was that I'm not the target audience of this article. I'm a ML practitioner. This seems more like an overstated opinionated wake up call to mgmt and sales people. Is not it?
vletal··on Hacker downloads close to 300k personal ID photos from Estonian gov database
Well, is not it simply because the rest of us living outside of the US are frequently exposed to US politics via mainstream media? Since there is 160+ countries in the world, this exposure can be hardly symmetrical.
vletal··on Cognitive deficits in people who have recovered from Covid-19
Well, the important question is whether the number of deaths and total number of IQ points lost in case of "stopping this theater" would be better or worse compare to the points and lives lost caused by the "theater".
vletal··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
Last week we went to a great local restaurant. At least it used to be in the pre-covid times. Now most of the stuff had a "temporary worker" or an "apprentice" sticker on their chest. You could see their hands shaking while serving heavy glasses of beer, improper way of serving food. They forgot about us at one point. We kindly asked to get served. The new hires were not even able to take our orders without being apologetic. After that a young waitress passed me a boiling hot soup over a head of our 3yo son!

Just a year ago, this was one of the most professionally stuffed family friendly restaurants in Prague. Now they have to train a new crew and build their reputation from scratch again.

Was working as a waitress here in the Czech Rep. / EU really that bad that the ones who managed to find a different job during the pandemic do not want to go back?

vletal··on Julia Computing raises $24M Series A
> The pervasive multiple-dispatch in Julia provides such a beautiful way to architecture a complicated piece of code.

On the other hand it makes function discovery almost impossible [1]. Combined with the way how 'using' keyword exports a predefined subset of functions, this makes the language doomed from larger adoption outside of academia at least as long as there is no superb autocompletion and IDE support.

vletal··on Find Someone to play chess with in London
This tree shape message reply structure might me such a cool distributed platform for playing chess! Like an evolution! Only better strategies survive upvotes and further replies.

If there just was a visualization of the chess boards in the individual threads.

According to timestamps of comments here I came approx 12 minutes late. RIP Casio
vletal··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
In Czechia we have sufficient capacity of ambulances and other emergency services. What happens is that off peak they serve to help move old people to hospital, like a super expensive taxi. In these cases I can see how "emergency Uber" could help. On the other hand the doctors serving in these ambulances are usually extremely well prepared, the best MD students go to study to serve there. Even if it is one in a hundred cases, they will recognize the stroke from a random chest pain. Replacing them would surely increase the death rate in these cases...
vletal··on Show HN: Print a WiFi Login Card
Since OP intended to learn a bunch of technologies while developing this project I'd be amused to see a version of this based on qrencode complied to WASM.
vletal··on Creep – a pretty sweet 4px wide pixel font
Thanks for the link! My tiny little display attached to RPi is very much looking forward to trying it out.
vletal··on How useful was the Netflix Prize challenge for Netflix?
- Do you really get recommenditions for movies you already watched or down voted? I'm not aware of that happening to me. It's not it the case that you use multiple different profiles within a single account? I sometimes see that for shows we finished, yet people tend to rewatch episodes...

- Removing a movie based on "not payed X times" would remove all popular movies for all users in a multiple of X steps.

-I agree with the new episodes banner.

vletal··on Israel data reportedly shows efficacy drop of Pfizer-BioNTech for delta variant
Yeah, but it's still an astonishing result. Most of the non mRNA vaccines have efficacies below 90%, not taking into account the delta variant.
vletal··on OSSU: Path to a free, self-taught education in computer science
Interviewing people without formal education to SWe/MLe roles has always been a disaster for me.
vletal··on Microsoft Teams 2 will use half the memory, dropping Electron for Edge Webview2
Most UI developers I know says that it's "reasonably pleasant", yet the is a shortage of "reasonably good" web developers on the market.
vletal··on Reducing Python String Memory Use in Apache Arrow 0.12 (2019)
There should be "string deduplication" in the original title. That would be informative and targeted more to Arrow users.
vletal··on Ohio sues Google, seeks to declare the internet company a public utility
Not defending Google, but it's because the analogy does not hold. You can be hardly banned from receiving water, because the interaction with it is pretty limited and it does not allow you to directly interact with other individuals.
vletal··on What Oxford taught me about posh people
Anti-social argument ad USSR is usually considered to be a fallacy common in the USA.

For example, Swiss are very social people. Up until recently they did not even have a minimal wage defined in some of the cantons, yet even the worst jobs are usually extremely well payed. I.e. a python developer has just like 2x more than a garbage man. Anything a human touches is expensive.

In European countries, even some of the Eastern ones, there is usually a top-notch single payer health care system. That's social.

You can also have a high quality state funded education systems. A social aspect of politics does not require you to go all dictatorial suppressing basic rights. Please stop using it. It's ridiculous.

vletal··on What Oxford taught me about posh people
You made me remember how my boss boasted having top talent (meaning 2 out of 50) of Cambridge and UCL graduates in the company.
