vladev··on WebGL Grand Theft Auto
Exactly the same on Firefox 12 and Chromium 18.
vladev··on '9223372036854775807' == '9223372036854775808'
No, you just need strict comparison (like you need it in JS and any other language with weak typing):

    php > var_dump('9223372036854775807' == '9223372036854775808');
    bool(true)
    php > var_dump('9223372036854775807' === '9223372036854775808');
    bool(false)
vladev··on Postgres 9.2 will feature linear read scalability up to 64 cores
To me, Postgres is the most underestimated database. Not sure if this is a bad thing...
vladev··on PyPy 1.7 released: widening the sweet spot
Currently, PyPy is faster than CPython at pretty much anything (except when C is involved, for example, but they are working on that, too). You can see their benchmarks and comparisons at http://speed.pypy.org/.

What I think they mean by those statements is that this will improve performance over the previous version of PyPy - therefore - improve over CPython as well.

vladev··on Clojure Conj Slides
One of the presentations is in SVG format. How do you open this and how is it made?
vladev··on Create a Robot Image from any text string
Any chance of open-sourcing this? :)
vladev··on Oracle discontinues Ruby/Rails support for NetBeans
RadRails: http://aptana.com/products/radrails (although it's Eclipse based, so it might not be what you need).

I'm wondering how come Oracle hasn't kill NetBeans yet? Considering the effort they've put into Eclipse and the aholes they are this seems a logical move.

vladev··on [dead]
The article doesn't say who. I'm wondering as well.
vladev··on It's a polyglot world after all - Lift adding support for JRuby
I've tried using it a few months ago. It's quite hard actually. The docs were poor, understanding the concepts was not easy and in a lot of places it abuses the Scala syntax:

LiftRules.rewrite.append { case RewriteRequest(ParsePath(List("shopInfo", "view", id), _, _, _), _, _) => RewriteResponse("shopInfo" :: "view" :: Nil, Map("id" -> id))

My opinion is that I don't like. At all! There are better and simpler ways to do things, even the real-time chats they brag about (socket.io, anyone?).

vladev··on Nexus S
No. I don't think Google will be selling the device themselves, like they did with the Nexus One. They will rather rely on external partners.
vladev··on TextCAPTCHA: 180 million simple logic questions
I actually wrote something similar at http://stopam.com. Never been to brave to announce it officially.
vladev··on Islands in lakes in islands in lakes ...
Pure lake and island oriented.
vladev··on What's wrong with 1975 programming
Does anyone know a good book that explains these things (CPU caches, RAM, virtual memory, etc.) in more detail?
vladev··on Blocking I/O: it's not just for pansies
If you want to keep the easy thread-per-connection model even with 1M connections you might have a look at Erlang - it takes the best of both worlds (threads and async IO) via its processes (so you get a process-per-connection). I read somewhere that the overhead of a process is just about 300 bytes.
vladev··on (e^(i * pi)) + 1 = 0
Interestingly - this equation contains the 5 most important constant in maths.
vladev··on Develop for Android with Scala
Wow. First place for Scala. The world is becoming a better place!
vladev··on Posterous (YC S08) raises ~4.4M from Redpoint, Trinity, and angels
How does Posterous make money?
vladev··on Ubuntu Python: raise an exception, import 190 modules
Hmm. Using iPython ot bpython causes the modules to be 200+ from the start.
vladev··on Smalltalk: Welcome to the Balkans
what does this has to do with the Balkans?
vladev··on Erjang is a virtual machine for Erlang, which runs on Java
Call me a skeptic, but this project ditches Erlang's awesome VM and takes only the clunky language syntax and puts it on the JVM.

I wonder how things like process isolation will work out.

vladev··on Can Java Be Saved?
"Can Java Be Saved?"

Hopefully not. :)

vladev··on Still using java? Lombok can make you more productive
If you are lucky to be using scala a simple bean he showed is like:

case class Mountain( val name: String, val latitude: Int, val longtitude: Int, var country: String)

For the above code you get a nice factory like

Mountain('name', 11, 12, 'nowhere')

with hashCode, toString and equals. Plus that you can use this class to decompose it using pattern matching:

mountain match { case Mountain(name, _, _, country) => println(name + ' located in ' + country) }

The future is here - it's just not evenly distributed:

vladev··on Sending null to /dev/null
In Scala's type system that can be expresses as well - it's called type variance. I believe C#4.0 might be getting this.
vladev··on Sending null to /dev/null
I agree, the example with the tld part wasn't the best - maybe an url schema (http part) would have been much better.

"So the proposed solution with the Option<> generic type really is just a reminder to the programmer." - exactly. But a good program is a program that works, so we need to achieve that first. :)

vladev··on Sending null to /dev/null
"Can't this be handled by the language itself, by default?" - yes - languages do that check, but it's done at runtime and if it fails - you get an exception.
vladev··on Sinatra clone in Scala
Maybe leveraging pattern matching could improve.

Actually - we can be able to implement our own methods get(), post(), etc. via pattern matching... So inspiring - on my way to fork it. ;)

vladev··on The unemployed developer - a tale with expected end
I've worked with many 28 old wring in PHP4. But, somehow, I feel that there is hope for them - someone 50 year old dog might show them the light.

I've made John 50 because I wanted to make it too late for him to fix things (although he still stands a pretty good chance to get back on track). Do not wait for something to happen. Stop repeating "Will read this book after the next release" - start reading now in you spare time.

Improving constantly is the main moral of this story. It has nothing to do with age.
