You're probably aware of Smalltalk already but in case you're not, I think it might be of interest to you. There's an open source implementation of Smalltalk called Pharo. They have a few screencasts and recordings of presentations at their website. http://pharo.org/documentation

Edit: Checked your profile. Going to say that yes, you almost certainly know about Smalltalk -- far more than do I.

In Linux distros and many other Unix-like operating systems, any text highlighted anywhere is copied straight to the clipboard the moment it has been highlighted, always. You then paste with a simple click of the middle-mouse button (which nowadays usually means the scrollwheel of your mouse). It's an excellent feature.

Firefox and Chrome, unfortunately, when doing auto-complete in the address bar, highlight the auto-completed part, overwriting your clipboard. This becomes a problem when you copy something and then open a new tab and begin to type out the URL of the site where you intended to use the copied string.

My way of dealing with this problem has been to add shortcuts on the new tab page to the sites where I frequently want to use copied content; archive.is, reddit and HN as well as a few others. That way I can at least navigate to those sites without touching the address bar.

One could of course turn off auto-complete in the browsers but aside from the situation mentioned above, auto-complete is such a useful feature.

I wish the browsers could find another way of implementing the auto-complete, not overwriting clipboard, but still retaining easy removal of the auto-completed part of the string.

Also, while we're on the subject of browsers and text highlight, I wish the drag-and-drop-ability of links from the webpage could be turned off by the user. Sometimes I want to start highlighting in the middle of a hyperlinked text. I never want to drag the link anywhere. I still like being able to drop files into the browser, though -- either to open them in the browser or to drop them onto an upload area of a page.

I wonder if "off-the-shell" is a typo or a pun.

A major cause of pain people are hit by when they try to use an operating system other than Windows is that they are uninformed about hardware compatibility. Frequently, when someone wants to try out a new OS, they'll try to install on their desktop/laptop/whatever and they will be frustrated to find a broken mess.

The correct way to get started with a new OS is to first try it out in a virtual machine. If you find that you enjoy using it, buy compatible hardware and go metal.

I am well aware of that. When you use WHOIS you will be aware of that inaccuracy and know to use just the country instead of using the city you got out of GeoIP thinking it was correct when such as with the example of my IP it was not. The city they placed me in using GeoIP is in fact a smaller one, both geographically and in terms of population, so it's not even like it was reasonable. If you need more accurate location than country level, collect it from your users via client provided APIs. Sure that data can be spoofed but the first thing you'd do would then be to compare it to the WHOIS data to get a feel for whether or not it's correct and if your userbase is sufficiently large and assuming most clients will report correct data, you can build a location database of your own using the data you've collected.

PS: I didn't downvote you. I don't have downvote privileges on HN yet and even if I did have them, I wouldn't use them against you because I think you are contributing to discussion even though I don't agree with what you are saying. That being said, I think you should have refrained from telling me to "research before making claims".

If all you wanted was general geographical area, why not just use WHOIS which is an actual core part of internet infrastructure?

GeoIP is unreliable. Just as an example of this, freegeoip.net reports that my IP belongs in a city 50 miles (80 kilometers) away from where I actually am at the moment.

With data so inaccurate, why even bother?

Bash functions are very useful when you want to manipulate the state of the shell in some way. That is, you write a function for it and stick that function in your .bash_profile. (Unless ofc an alias would be able to perform the job in which case one should just make an alias instead.)

Beyond that, I have been in many situations where standalone shell scripts make the most sense for a task and in which case bash functions have helped me organize the code such that it is both more readable and also so that I don't have to repeat sections of code multiple times within a single script.

It all comes down to personal experience and preference, I think.
