vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
I agreed about the rating reliability thing. I'm hoping that if I have enough reviews for a given course+instructor that it will mitigate some of that risk.

Good idea on the digital version. I'm also going to be integrating with Chegg soon for rentals.

vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
I'm hoping to start expanding to some of the larger/more popular schools within the next few months. Thanks for checking it out!
vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
Thanks. I've been trying to think of some better names but haven't come up with any yet. I'd like to have something with 'book' in the title, but it's not deal breaker.
vital101··on Ask HN: Design Resources for Developers?
Thank you so much for your reply. I think you're correct in that I'm going to need to challenge a lot of my assumptions with regards to visualizing this data.

I have a few designer friends that I'll talk this out with over beer sometime, but I also look forward to reading your book recommendations.

Thanks!

vital101··on REST framework 2 released: Simple, beautiful, browsable Web APIs for Django
If you're looking for a framework for creating REST APIs in Django, TastyPie is also worth a look.

vital101··on Visualizing Tolkien
I did some work while still in college doing analysis of texts from Project Gutenberg. Removing the stop words made the analysis far more interesting.
vital101··on Ask HN: Review my startup: Hackerfly.com
The site looks great and I love the idea! One thing that I noticed about the landing page was that as I was trying to read your slides they transitioned to the next one too fast. A longer interval or less text might make it easier to digest.

Good luck!

vital101··on PHP: A fractal of bad design
> There is no threading support whatsoever. >> That's a good thing. It forces you to use async HTTP programming or something like beanstalk, both of which are better than the complexity of threading.

While there isn't multi-threading in PHP, you can in fact multi-process which provides similar functionality.

vital101··on Cars kill cities
When my wife and I went to Oahu for out honeymoon, we thought it was absolutely insane that anyone would rent a car while visiting the place. They have a free bus system that shuttles you around the down town area, and there are loads of tours that can get you to the regular hots spots that everyone wants to visit.
vital101··on The Critics Rave... for Microsoft?
I've had the Samsung Focus for the past 4 months. The OS itself is fantastic, but it's plainly on obvious that the apps on WP7 don't get nearly as much attention as their counterparts on iOS and Android. Hopefully with not adoption will come better apps.
vital101··on Amazon Has Drastically Changed the Way I Read
I have a Kindle, but any technical books I read are physical. It's much easier to thumb through information quickly with a physical book when you aren't quite sure what you're looking for.
vital101··on How to use Firebug on your iPad and iPhone
We use Weinre for remote debugging of iPads and it has worked out very well for us.
vital101··on Ask HN: What will you do when you're 40 and still unsuccessful?
I've wanted more than anything to get a business going, live the startup life, and be my own boss. But I try to put it all in to perspective: I work to live, not live to work. For me, success is being able to provide for my family and enjoy the work that I do. YMMV.
vital101··on Ask HN: Are ergonomic keyboards really useful?
I used to program with a regular keyboard, but as I got older I found that wrist fatigue became more of an issue. I now code on a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000 and never have any issues. There is a short learning period for the split keyboard, but I didn't find it slowing me down for more than 4 hours.
vital101··on Why the Lumia 800 is the first device I would switch to from an iPhone
Two months ago my contract was up with AT&T, so I decided "What the hell, I'm going to purchase an iPhone(4)!". So I did. Turns out, after all the hype I was completely underwhelmed by it. It's not that it's a bad phone, it's great. It's just that the general OS feels tired to me. The interface. I ended up playing with a Samsung Focus a few days later in the same AT&T store and swapped my iPhone for it. I'm incredibly happy with this phone, and the Mango update addressed many of my concerns. Microsoft did well on the core features with this phone, which for a user like me is everything. I'm not a particularly heavy app user, so the seeming lack of quality apps doesn't bother me (even though there seems to have been an upturn in good apps lately).

vital101··on Poll: You and Mobile Development
Once we start to see hardware accelerated Canvas on mobile devices, I think a lot of the mobile development will move towards HTML5.
vital101··on Delivering fast boot times in Windows 8
To be fair, the people working on the Windows Phone 7 OS seem to be competent as well. (Although you may have lumped those people in the Windows category)
vital101··on Progressive Internet Explorer
I've used PIE on a handful of projects. Performance only suffers if you're attaching it to a ton of elements. Using it here and there doesn't cost too much.
vital101··on Going Paper-Free for $220
Agreed. I particularly liked how the section heading showed up on the left only after you had scrolled to that point.
vital101··on New Mac OS X Lion features announced: Version Control, Instant Resume
I wonder if there is any kind of copyright infringement with http://www.versionsapp.com/?
vital101··on Great. Skype is down.
The statements by the OP rubbed me the wrong way as well. We always preach here that you should have a backup system in case a service fails, why should this be any different for real life? Network not available? Store updates locally and transmit them when it is. Skype down? Find an alternative for a few hours until it's back up. It's not the end of the world. Think of it as an opportunity to explore new products.

Note: I know some people rely on Skype for their businesses, and that it sucks that it went out. All I'm saying is that most people should have some sort of contingency plan for when this situation occurs.

vital101··on Look at my silly idea
My knee-jerk reaction was that this was stupid, but then I REALLY wanted to see what the next picture was...

Exploiting curiosity like this is kind of a neat idea.

vital101··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
No, he didn't. He said it as "As the saying goes...".
vital101··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
A once asked a professor of mine why he used Mac OS X instead of Linux. He said to me "Linux is free, so long as your time is.".

I think that really gets the point across. While Ubuntu and a few others have made great strides in getting things to "just work", OS X is still the king in that regard.

vital101··on The Benefits of Exercising Before Breakfast
I second this. My wife and I also have an elliptical, and it's much easier to handle in the morning, rather than running. Although in the spring/summer/fall I tend to enjoy running outside in the morning over the elliptical.
vital101··on Yahoo Reduces Staff By 4 Percent; Hands Out Pink Slips To Over 500 Employees
Was this across the board for all departments in Yahoo, or was it more focused in engineering?
vital101··on Joe Stump: Your city sucks (And so does mine)
Yes, but the cost heating that house makes is considerably less affordable.
