vishaldpatel··on What happens when you stand for 5 years
I'm reasonably fit, but I'd never stood for the whole day, until two weeks ago. Then I started running the family business while the parents went away for vacation. I decided to stand / walk instead of grabbing a stool because I thought it would compensate for the lack of other exercise I'd be getting - business hours are fairly long, and I really don't feel like workout out after.

Take-aways so far:

- When standing, I automatically change it up - sometimes I stand up-right, sometimes I stand with my legs split a bit.

- After a couple of days of discomfort, I can basically stand all day, no issues.

- I come home, and sit. And if I'm watching TV, I pass out for a good 20 minutes. Automatic nap.

- I don't feel sleepy at work at all. Zero lethargy. I don't feel sleepy after lunch.

Some advice:

- Try to engage your core, your glutes, legs.. different muscles to keep you upright.

- Change things up. I try not to lurch. To lower myself, I split my legs a bit. Sometimes for fun (while reading email, random junk online..) I do a half-squat.

vishaldpatel··on Focus by Firefox, a Content Blocker for iOS
This is awesome! If there was a similar blocker for Mac, I'd totally use it. Although, I'm not sure why it is called "Focus".

But hey, this way I can share my Firefox plugin called Focus ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/focus-by-caba... ) - it lets you block websites so you can focus on your work :). Also available for Chrome ( https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/focus-by-cabana-la... ) =)

tl;dr - everything that can break will probably break. Everything else will just get torn to shreds.

If you're on Firefox on the desktop, then it installs the add-on. To see which add-ons you have installed, go to Tools -> Add-ons in Firefox! Thanks for trying out the plug in :)

Haha - I tried it. It's shocking at first and annoying soon after. I figured that soft power is the way to go.

There's no substitute for a healthy lifestyle. That said, even with one, you may find that you need a tool like this. I know I do.

I added the ability to turn it off as a feature after needing it! =). But yeah - there are heavier alternatives for heavier needs.

vishaldpatel··on Show HN: A Firefox extension to break the habit of typing distracting websites
I'm sure there are - not sure how lightweight they are though. I'll release a Chrome extension fairly soon.

The hostfile is great! I use it for more permanent blocks. Reason I use the plugin is to be able to turn blocking on and off quickly if I need to, and as of the next version which will hopefully be available tomorrow, I'll be able to block going to sub-directories.

So, say you have a habit of typing in /r/cars ... I don't know how to block that using a hostfile, but with the plugin this won't be a problem.

Great idea! I hadn't thought about the autocomplete feature making it easier to go to a website - but you're right! I'll try to a way to reduce it's effects in a future version.

I think it'd still be a good idea to leave auto-complete on for useful websites -- you've taken care of that by adding those sites to the bookmarks =)

vishaldpatel··on Freedom from Fries
Potatoes are very nutritious. Maybe there's a less greasy way to make fries so that they'll taste good? Maybe make them in coconut oil and a lot less salt?

All the meat served in restaurants is far worse for you than fries.

vishaldpatel··on Guide to Sending Email Like a Startup
Remember folks, every single piece of correspondence we send should be valuable to the receiver.

Welcome email? Great - tell them something that will help them to get setup.

Referral email? Great - tell them how they can win by referring you, and I mean really win.

Promotional email? Make sure that promo is worth their while.

And never take your audience's time for granted. You're trying to build a relationship.

vishaldpatel··on Is Photography the Best Deal in the Art Market?
Is there should be a way of creating an "original" file - the first, which can only be moved, rather than copied? The copy will always have a "copy" symbol on it of some sort.

vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Importance of a good .com domain?
Got it. Yeah, I figured. I suppose the only time this could be an issue is through word-of-mouth. I tell someone its 'awesomedomain.co" and they'll type in "awesomedomain.com" after a couple of days - but hopefully they'll just type it into google anyway.

vishaldpatel··on To Stop Procrastinating, Start by Understanding the Emotions Involved
Here's 'one weird trick' that will instantly stop you from procrastinating:

- Schedule the activity

- When the time comes, you'll probably try to think of ways to put it off - ohh the great internal debate: to do, or to punt. Tell yourself that you might as well get started while you rethink your position.

You'll find that you only need to be motivated for about five minutes before you're cruising right along! =)
