vishaldpatel··on I built my blog on websockets
Congratulations for making it to the front page of Hacker News. Have an upvote! :)
vishaldpatel··on Stanford's Most Popular Major Is Now Computer Science
That is amazing because most universities tend to have the dullest CS teaching crew. I mean, serious insomnia treatments.
vishaldpatel··on [dead]
Have you ever ordered something from Amazon instead of driving 1.5 miles to the Home Hardware down the street? I'm somewhat ashamed to say that I have. Never again!! lol..
vishaldpatel··on Windows 8 Pro Upgrade to cost $39.99
Have they announced the price of a new copy? Would be nice if it was similarly priced.
vishaldpatel··on Orbitz shows costlier hotel options to Mac users
Does this means that Linux users get the best deals? Or maybe it's Windows users with cracked copies of Windows.
vishaldpatel··on Most Startups Die Before Launching, Some Die After
We died after :(
vishaldpatel··on Python Packaging: Hate, hate, hate everywhere
Title of the post reminds me of the Player Hater's Ball.
vishaldpatel··on Women and Tech
So, who is the intended audience?
vishaldpatel··on Outsourcing Birthdays and Flirting
Either I'm a terrible story teller, or you guys have some seriously large chips on your shoulders. I'll take responsibility for this one guys, I'm sorry. I just wanted to share about the time when a school full of kids, singing horribly out of sync woke me up laughing on a regular basis.

The rest of it was just context.

vishaldpatel··on I Can Be Just As Capable. Let Me.
Male developers tend to rip keyboards away from other males too though... it takes patience on the part of a human-being to not be in the driver's seat yet still be in control.
vishaldpatel··on Outsourcing Birthdays and Flirting
There's a school right behind our home in India. It's pretty big and it's someone's birthday everyday.

School starts at seven in the morning. After prayers in three different religions and the singing of the national anthem, at least one class wishes someone a happy birthday by screaming out the birthday song.

I woke up with a smile everyday =).

vishaldpatel··on Science May Soon Give Us Pills That Make Us Exercise
Y'know... I live in the suburbs and you'll be surprised how many amenities are walkable, yet everyone still prefers to drive. At the end of the day, people are just lazy as fuck. Unless there's a good carrot (or stick) that'll motivate them enough - looking good doesn't seem to be a good enough carrot, and deteriorating health doesn't seem to be a big enough stick - they won't change.

Perhaps a fat tax coupled with a staying healthy tax return might help.

vishaldpatel··on USPS gets into the SPAM business
This is just like receiving grocery store ads in the mail, is it?
vishaldpatel··on Damn, Girl: New York Has Almost Double The Female Founders
New York also has a little more than double the females.
vishaldpatel··on What happens when you die?
Who cares!? You'll be dead!
vishaldpatel··on Waking up early, 10 tips that worked for me
Something that has worked for me is to have an alarm that I actually like waking up to. Shitty alarms make for the most annoying things in the world when you're trying to sleep. But something nice... we all have our preferences... I like wind chimes, or progressive music - stuff that picks up, rather than starting off with a bang.
vishaldpatel··on Code not physical property
It would be lovely to read an IP lawyer's opinion on this story's implications.

Does this mean that a programmer working at a firm can walk away with code without breaking any laws?

vishaldpatel··on So you want to try switching to Ubuntu?
I dual boot with Ubuntu on my Macbook. For anyone thinking about making the switch, it is really easy.

My primary tools for daily life:

-> Instant messenger.

-> Email client.

-> Web browser.

-> Text editor.

Both MacOS and Ubuntu Linux have excellent working options for each, so I don't miss MacOS when I'm in Linux. Infact, sometimes I miss Linux when I'm in MacOS.

Oh.. and if you're dual-booting, Ubuntu mounts the MacOS partition as read-only, which is great for being able to access stuff in my mac partition.

vishaldpatel··on Walken on Rails
Thats not funny, man! I was really lookin' forward to it!
vishaldpatel··on Be yourself. Abnormal people create abnormal returns.
Actually, most people aren't that interested in the 'latest in fashion' either. If fashion is what turns you on.. then don't let the computer geeks turn you off ;).. unless they turn you on as well.. in that case how you doin'? points and winks
vishaldpatel··on Female Bioware writer harassed on Twitter
Somehow I don't see the logic. She's not a fan of gaming. So she'd like to make games less game-like to make the non-gaming crowd buy games. They're called books, tv shows and movies. And there are plenty of non-gamers consuming them.
vishaldpatel··on The New Interface Is There Is No interface
Wall of text. Definitely No Interface >.<
vishaldpatel··on Ramos alarm clock
I have this habit of walking all the way up to both of my alarm clocks, resetting the alarm to 20 minutes later, and then walking back to bed for a bit more sleep.
vishaldpatel··on What Would The End Of Football Look Like?
The risk isn't why they make so much money. It's the crowds. If tomorrow everyone started watching soccer in America instead of football, then the players would make a lot less money, despite the risk to bodily injury.
vishaldpatel··on Build a house for less than $5000
Did the house need to pass inspections / safety?
vishaldpatel··on Be People Smart or Perish
Gotta love these sensationalist titles. No, you will not perish if you're not people-smart. There are plenty of entrepreneurs that have won by, you know, enterprising in areas where their lack of people skills didn't hold them back. Some of them went on to run social networks..
vishaldpatel··on MusicForProgramming();
Buddhists often chant mantras to stay in meditation. I suspect that a steady beat / rhythm has a lot more to do with concentrating than any specific genre. It gets the rest of our minds jogging along with the thing we're trying to achieve.
vishaldpatel··on Amazon launches as Junglee in India
In case anyone is windering about the name, junglee means "wild" in Hindi.
vishaldpatel··on How Did Israel Become “Start-Up Nation”?
The weather and the women had nothing to do with it. Nothing at all.
vishaldpatel··on Hacking the Used Car Purchase
TL;DR version: Buy and sell used cars on craigslist instead of dealers cuz you'll get a better deal. Don't forget to carfax it and take it to a mechanic for inspection.
