virtualsue··on Bram Moolenaar has died
Such sad news! Condolences to his family, friends and thousands of admirers worldwide. One way to commemorate his life is to donate to the charityware cause he championed: https://www.iccf-holland.org
virtualsue··on Perl 7 is going to be Perl 5.32, mostly
With any luck Perl 7 with phase out the archaic linenoise features. This is overdue IMO.
virtualsue··on Bridging the gap between Python and Jupyter
Nice. Coincidentally, I saw a talk about Jupyter @ FOSDEM earlier this year, this time with Perl 6 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSZV8IXIsM4). I had no knowledge of it prior to that point, and I really should come up with a good reason to use it.
virtualsue··on What Came First: The Village or the Temple? Or, the Mystery of Göbekli Tepe
Likewise, I had a brief conversation with the fascinating Dr Lewis Dartnell where we discussed the origin of barley farming. Did our ancestors grow it for food, and accidentally discover that you can also make beer with it, or did the beer come first and bread second? I had assumed the former, but now that I think about it...
virtualsue··on Perl 6 Optimism
It was a decision made by Larry Wall alone.Since it’s his language, he’s allowed to do that.
virtualsue··on Revenue from self-driving Teslas only allowed through the Tesla Network
Since they appear to plan on running an uber/lyft style service with self-driving tech, and they believe that their tech is especially likely to give them an advantage in that business, that would be one big reason.
virtualsue··on Revenue from self-driving Teslas only allowed through the Tesla Network
...bearing in mind that Tesla AFAIAA is supposed to be selling more moderately priced cars in the near future
virtualsue··on Revenue from self-driving Teslas only allowed through the Tesla Network
Surely this is to stop Uber, Lyft etc from buying a fleet of the things for their business use, rather than targeting individual drivers specifically (though they're happy to stop that too).
virtualsue··on DotGo2016 – “Acclaimed” Euro Dev Conf Lacks Suff Toilets, Shafts Women to Comp
This is a response from an old friend of mine: http://imgur.com/a/4MSRr

I think it's fair to say that both of us believe that women ought to have their own place to comb their hair, fix their lipstick and gossip about clothes and boys.

virtualsue··on Fire-damaged Brazilian tortoise receives new 3D shell
1/ You don't know what their motives were 2/ You weren't there so your opinion is worthless
virtualsue··on Ask HN: Which open source projects have kind, supportive, talented teams?
The Perl 6 development team is generally good-natured and work to be pleasant to each other and newcomers. http://perl6.org/
virtualsue··on Old Techies Never Die; They Just Can’t Get Hired as an Industry Moves On (2012)
Respect!
virtualsue··on Old Techies Never Die; They Just Can’t Get Hired as an Industry Moves On (2012)
Something journalists like to say. Not true. Hacker News classic nonsense.
virtualsue··on New Perl 6 Homepage
Poor Grim_Reaper. Nothing to do all day but post complaints in a Perl 6 thread. I hope you can find some sort of purpose in life, friend.
virtualsue··on New Perl 6 Homepage
That's pretty much the intention. I have heard Larry Wall say that Camelia was created to appeal to 7 year old girls. I didn't hear him go into any complicated discussions regarding masculinity/femininity or any of that jazz.
virtualsue··on The XY Problem
This is only too true, and I have no doubt that this behaviour has deeply discouraged people looking for a bit of help to get them up the learning curve.
virtualsue··on Perl as a career option
Python and Java are moving targets as well. Adoption of Python 3 in particular has been very slow. Who told you that any language is an 'island of stability'? Use C if you want something approaching that. :-)
virtualsue··on Indian School Girl Creates Washing Machine That Runs Without Electricity
My daughter has a small pedal powered washing machine that she uses in her house in Leicester (UK). I liked the article and the girl's mechanical ingenuity but the idea itself is very old!
virtualsue··on Amazon, the time has come to give you a key
I've started picking up amazon deliveries at local shops (Collect+). This is working out rather well - no need for special lockbox or a supersize ring o' keys.
virtualsue··on Wozniak: “Actually, the movie was largely a lie about me”
I doubt he was jealous so much as annoyed at the way he was portrayed in the Jobs film. I was annoyed at how he was portrayed myself, and I don't have any particular axe to grind.

I also seriously doubt the validity of your statements regarding David Geffen and his clients. That's just pure speculation on your part, unless you have some sort of amazing citation(s) you can dig up to support what you said.

None of us will ever know what Wozniak or Jobs would have achieved if they had never worked together.

virtualsue··on 25Y Male making over $250K+ annually. Still stuck. Help?
Why not tell him to keep at it. He's only a failure if he gives up on his dreams and stops trying.
virtualsue··on Poll: What level of math is programming roughly analogous to?
Hey dad, glad to hear that your 11 year old is interested in and able to do some programming. It's one of my favourite pastimes as well as my career. The poll is not meaningful, however.
virtualsue··on Perl is 26 Today
I run into many Scala fans amongst Java developers. It's the current shiny thing in that technology area. Good old Java (of a similar age to Perl) is usually what they're making their living doing...
virtualsue··on Perl is 26 Today
There is, in fact, all the space in the world.
virtualsue··on Perl is 26 Today
Many happy returns of the day. Good old Perl. I'd be happy to use other languages, but I tend to get plenty of offers to continue using this one. :-)
virtualsue··on I think DuckDuckGo would do better changing that Quack of a name
Google chose a name which can be used like a verb, which I think was a very clever move.
