vinayan3··on Ask HN: Do you live a Free Software only life?
Richard Stallman has a good description of what the computing environment which has only free and open software is like.

https://stallman.org/stallman-computing.html

One big issue is that streaming movies or tv shows might be tough. Some of the decoders used are closed source.

vinayan3··on Google Maps is no longer a flat map
There is a really good short youtube video about map projections and to understand the tradeoffs that are made to create them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIID5FDi2JQ
vinayan3··on A $3B Plan to Turn Hoover Dam into a Giant Battery
From Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_Dam#Operation:

> The amount of electricity generated by Hoover Dam has been decreasing along with the falling water level in Lake Mead due to the prolonged drought in the 2010s and high demand for the Colorado River's water. Lake Mead fell to a new record low elevation of 1,071.61 feet (326.63 m) on July 1, 2016 before beginning to rebound slowly.[95] Under its original design, the dam will no longer be able to generate power once the water level falls below 1,050 feet (320 m), which could occur as early as 2017. To lower the minimum power pool elevation from 1,050 to 950 feet (320 to 290 m), five wide-head turbines, designed to work efficiently with less flow, were installed.[96] Due to the low water levels, by 2014 it was providing power only during periods of peak demand.[97]

Which is really surprising.

vinayan3··on Ask HN: Were you happy moving your API from REST to GraphQL?
Yes exception for File uploads. There isn't a spec and not all apollo clients yet support it.

Hopefully, it'll be standardized soon.

For writing React Apps GraphQL is wonderful!

vinayan3··on Ask HN: Were you happy moving your API from REST to GraphQL?
> My biggest complaint has been "lost" exceptions and caching.

This is quite annoying because the server never throws a 500 error so the normal logging doens't kick in.

vinayan3··on Show HN: Ansible Kernel – Run Ansible Tasks and Plays with Jupyter Notebook
To me it looks like a REPL for Ansible. If it does let you build each task in a cell then you could develop the whole playbook interactively and incrementally. It could reduce the turn around time of having to run a long playbook and waiting till the latest step you wrote.
vinayan3··on 14,400-year-old flatbread remains that predate known agriculture
Only one settlement so far was found to have flat bread. So Paleo people's beliefs aren't that shaken.
vinayan3··on Why “children,” not “childs”? (2016)
I have also seen in code in some examples of representing a graph. It looked pretty odd.

vinayan3··on Gusto's new office in SF has a no-shoes policy
I find it more comfortable not to wear shoes at work but, I think they are needed to go to the bathroom.

Anyone from Gusto want to comment if they provide slippers for the bathroom?

vinayan3··on Hunger Is a Gatekeeper of Pain in the Brain
If you have persistent stomach pain not eating can sometimes do the trick if you suffer from digestive inflammation. The inflammation can be triggered by eating the wrong combination and or quantities of certain foods.
vinayan3··on Widescreen laptops are dumb
Yes I love being able to have 3 screen splits on each monitor so that I don't have to move any windows when I need to look up some reference.
vinayan3··on [dead]
I can't login to the console as of 15:19 ET. I need to check why my application isn't working.

edit As of 15:15 ET the page https://status.aws.amazon.com/ isn't working for me.

edit #2 https://status.aws.amazon.com/ is back it says a internet connectivity issue was resolved. AWS Console still isn't back for me.

edit #3 Things seems back. 15:33 ET

vinayan3··on Using Yelp Data to Predict Restaurant Closure
As the author mentioned changes in rent are a huge factor. Did the date of closures coincide with a new lease which can range from 1 - 10 years. Seeing a distribution of the age of the restaurant when closed could show them.

The other huge factor is cost of labor. Maybe looking at the minimum wage could be another feature. The news usually has those articles about how restaurants are struggling and the incremental minimum wage increase will hurt their business. It'd be interesting to see how strong of a factor that is in restaurant closures.

Also factors that could be tough to get but important * Cost of the ingredients like meat, vegetables etc.. * General Economic conditions, are consumers going out to eat?

vinayan3··on Docker is Dead
Serious question. Anyone willing to give a summary of their usage of Docker EE and a review ?
vinayan3··on Nvidia’s New Policy Limits GeForce Data Center Usage
The inverse I think might be true. If the GPUs are much more accessible on the cloud, deployment and placement problems handled, then more developers will be comfortable building around that. Otherwise, it's a massive hassle to have physical machines with specialized hardware.
vinayan3··on Nvidia’s New Policy Limits GeForce Data Center Usage
For the longest time they have encouraged people to use Geforce cards for doing machine learning. Now they are changing the licensing and making it not okay for data centers is not gonna sit well with people. Especially with the carveout for Bitcoin miners. The number of customers who are impacted like the article points out will be mainly universities. This is bad move overall and isn't gonna gain them any good will with the community. Like seriously how many companies are out there are putting out Geforce cards into data centers? The big data centers from cloud computing platforms all use Tesla cards.
vinayan3··on Ask HN: Where can I find high-end stock images for a website?
I highly recommend it. They have some amazing images.
vinayan3··on Implementing strcmp, strlen, and strstr using SSE 4.2 instructions (2008)
According to this one lecture the speed ups vary from 1.47x - 13.8x. http://ispass.org/ispass2011/slides/4_2.pdf

Another set of benchmarks comparing simple strcmp to SSE 4.2: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/simple-fast-string-comparison...

vinayan3··on Rural America Is Building Its Own Internet Because No One Else Will
It would be really fun digging up places to lay fiber. I've wired up 2 offices for new networking equipment when the company moved. It's pretty satisfying seeing the stuff you rigged up light up and actually function. It was pretty fun but I can imagine doing digging with equipment would be even more fun.
vinayan3··on Rural America Is Building Its Own Internet Because No One Else Will
In the UK farmers are laying their own fiber. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-37974267
vinayan3··on Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Beta
Anyone who signed up for the Beta know if there will be Mac Build?
vinayan3··on Ransomware attack puts KQED public media in low-tech mode
Really sad. The hackers behind this should be ashamed of trying to get money out of a group which gets a good chunk of their budget from donations.
vinayan3··on Think Twice Before Ordering Coffee or Tea on a Plane
Taking a flight can contribute to dehydration because the air in the cabin is dry and low humidity. Drinking coffee and tea doesn't help.
vinayan3··on Google Jobs Search
I tried out the example in the post and didn't get any of the contextualized information. Guess it isn't rolled out to everyone yet or do you have to sign up somewhere to see it?
vinayan3··on How to Make $80,000 per Month on the Apple App Store
If apps like these are on the appstore then how effective is Apple's review process? Isn't this why they have the review process in the first place?
vinayan3··on Top 20 Most Sold and Most Read Books of the Week
I got super excited they would have better charting for Cloudwatch. I used Datadog for awhile and the charting system was amazing there. Hopefully, one day they'll improve Cloudwatch.
vinayan3··on Ask HN: What happened to binary sizes?
The machine code can be so big because people put huge strings as constants. As I mentioned cutting down binary size comes from working on the code and understand how the complier translate it into machine codes. The compiler could unravel a loop, inline functions, etc... The compiler is making decisions about binary size vs speed for you. There are ways to tell it not to do that.
vinayan3··on Ask HN: What happened to binary sizes?
APK? Well he's talk about iOS even then on Android you can write native code and compile to armv7 etc... and have optimized binaries for certain CPUs.
vinayan3··on Ask HN: What happened to binary sizes?
It takes a bit of engineering to cut binary sizes down. It depends on how much they care and the cost they incur by having larger binaries. With building mobile apps you get a prebuilt XCode project and it takes a lot of effort to tinker with it to reduce binary size.
vinayan3··on Ask HN: What happened to binary sizes?
Well all of those examples were apps with a single target architecture, win32 or win16.

These days apps have to compile for multiple architectures especially on Android. Those are all packaged up together. Not only that these days you have multiple sizes for image assets for various pixel densities. On top of it all these days people rely on a lot of external libraries which may or may not be on a phone or system. You can't depend on shared linking like when developing for Windows back in the day.

Not to mention, fonts. Apps these days package up fonts and send them along too.
