> the tendency for wages in jobs that have experienced little or no increase in labor productivity to rise in response to rising wages in other jobs that did experience high productivity growth. In turn, these sectors of the economy become more expensive over time, because their input costs increase while productivity does not. Typically, this affects services more than manufactured goods, and in particular health, education, arts and culture.

vijayr02··on Is this the civilization we want? (2017)
Isn't that the difference between God and Simon O'Rourke?

Or is this a Larry Ellison joke?

(The difference between God and LE is that God doesn't think he's LE)

This should perfectly complement Bic for Her ball pens. Check out the reviews on Amazon:

Excerpts:

"My husband has never allowed me to write, as he doesn't want me touching mens pens."

"I bought it for all my female friends and relatives. It enabled them, finally, to write things (although they may not yet know to do so on paper; but you can only expect so much, really)."

vijayr02··on Show HN: Wadzilla. Play DOOM in Zork
No screenshots? ;p

Also - IMNSHO the obvious name for this project is Zoom - but that's been taken by a similar game where you slay your coworkers by talking too much.

The next obvious candidate therefore is Dork :)

vijayr02··on Geometry for Entertainment (1950)
Mitr in Hindi means friend.

Mazanav sounds like "majha naav", which means "my name" in Marathi, the language spoken in Mumbai (which is where the translator seems to live / have lived).

So, in summary - my name is the friend. Hello Mitr!

I spent countless hours playing the DF2 demo that came on one of the computer magazine CDs in India (PC Quest I think). My favourite FPS by a long shot :)

vijayr02··on Killing Sir Walter Scott: A philosophical exploration of weeding (2013)
Ivanhoe is my favourite novel. I regularly re-read it and every time it transports me to another world. If that's the book she got rid of, what a shame! At least I hope disposal meant distribution to other libraries, not being pulped...
vijayr02··on Killing Sir Walter Scott: A philosophical exploration of weeding (2013)
I lazily read the title as Sir Walter Raleigh and went in assuming this was about how he introduced tobacco to England and was then put to death:

vijayr02··on What if modern appliances were built like the KitchenAid stand mixer?

vijayr02··on How French was medieval England?
>"Why, how call you those grunting brutes running about on their four legs?" demanded Wamba.

"Swine, fool, swine," said the herd, "every fool knows that."

"And swine is good Saxon," said the Jester; "but how call you the sow when she is flayed, and drawn, and quartered, and hung up by the heels, like a traitor?"

"Pork," answered the swine-herd.

"I am very glad every fool knows that too," said Wamba, "and pork, I think, is good Norman-French; and so when the brute lives, and is in the charge of a Saxon slave, she goes by her Saxon name; but becomes a Norman, and is called pork, when she is carried to the Castle-hall to feast among the nobles; what dost thou think of this, friend Gurth, ha?"

"It is but too true doctrine, friend Wamba, however it got into thy fool's pate."

"Nay, I can tell you more," said Wamba, in the same tone; "there is old Alderman Ox continues to hold his Saxon epithet, while he is under the charge of serfs and bondsmen such as thou, but becomes Beef, a fiery French gallant, when he arrives before the worshipful jaws that are destined to consume him. Mynheer Calf, too, becomes Monsieur de Veau in the like manner; he is Saxon when he requires tendance, and takes a Norman name when he becomes matter of enjoyment."

"By St Dunstan," answered Gurth, "thou speakest but sad truths; little is left to us but the air we breathe, and that appears to have been reserved with much hesitation, solely for the purpose of enabling us to endure the tasks they lay upon our shoulders. The finest and the fattest is for their board; the loveliest is for their couch; the best and bravest supply their foreign masters with soldiers, and whiten distant lands with their bones, leaving few here who have either will or the power to protect the unfortunate Saxon.

vijayr02··on The false positive rate of AI detectors and its effect on freelance writers
