vidanay··on Microsoft Recall should make you consider Linux
Every major CAD software that I'm aware of has its roots in Unix. I personally used AutoCAD on SGI and Sun hardware with Unix OSes.

Give some market demand, they could switch back and support Linux

vidanay··on Air Force security team can breach an 'impenetrable' SCIF in one minute
You can probably also get it for 40% off at Harbor Freight with a coupon.
vidanay··on The Political Causes of the College Enrollment Crisis
The single biggest boost I can give to my child is that I am on track to be able to fund them through college with zero debt.
vidanay··on The President of Iran has died
What's that saying? "A helicopter is 10,000 parts flying in close formation around an oil leak."
vidanay··on Americans are choking on surging fast-food prices. "I can't justify the expense"
Growing up in the 80's, I got fast food (McD's, Pizza Hut) maybe once every two or three weeks. I got to go to a "nice" restaurant perhaps twice a year.

My parents however, left us with a Tombstone pizza or Swanson's TV dinner three times per week when they went out to dinner.

vidanay··on My undying love for the painfully uncool Amiga
I will always respect Amiga computers. When I went to college in the fall of 1989, I brought my beloved Apple IIc and 9" green screen. The day after moving in to the dorm, I discovered that one of my fellow students on the floor had an Amiga and I was absolutely floored by the color graphics and performance.
vidanay··on Difficulty levels of most European languages for Americans
I have a friend who was born in Germany but grew up in Switzerland. His wife was born and grew up in Lichtenstein. They have been married for 20+ years and they /still/ occasionally can't understand each other when they slip into their childhood dialects.
vidanay··on Ask HN: What movies changed your perception of reality or life?
Dead Poets Society

Knowing that guy like I do, he was likely smuggling Dokken t-shirts and cassettes.
vidanay··on "The Tourists Have Taken Everything" Laments Japanese Resident as Retro Runs Dry
Tangent of the day: A buddy of mine in high school visited the Soviet Union ca. 1987.

Levis (jeans in general) were such a hot commodity on the black market there, that the number of pairs of jeans in his luggage was written on his entry stamp in his passport, and when he exited the country, he had to have the same number of jeans.

vidanay··on The $10k BYD Seagull EV is scaring the U.S. auto industry
> Just because Americans have never purchased small, affordable cars _en masse_ before doesn't mean they won't in the future.

I'm guessing you weren't around in the 80s?

vidanay··on Dali owner file petition to cap liability in Baltimore bridge collapse at $43.7M
The cheapest option (and most profitable to tug operators) is to require that ships over a certain tonnage be tug escorted past the bridge.
vidanay··on Cups vs. grams: why can't American and British cooks agree on food measurements?
Except baking. Baking is more chemistry than cooking.

vidanay··on School absences have ‘exploded’ almost everywhere
How does having more life experiences preclude someone from earning money? I'd go so far as to suggest that a more rounded "real-world" education improves their chances of making money.

We need to stop thinking of "education" as a monolithic school concept that produces worker bees through rote memorization and repetition.

vidanay··on School absences have ‘exploded’ almost everywhere
Hammer, meet nail.

As my child's parent, it is my duty to be aware of their educational performance, needs, and shortcomings. Based on all that info, I have no problem deciding to take them out of school for two days to go trout fishing with grandpa, or to view the eclipse with grandma.

vidanay··on Baltimore disaster may be the largest-ever marine insurance payout
That doesn't mean there will not be massive insurance claims. It just means that the US government will foot the bill for fast replacement and will still pursue as much compensation as possible in the long run.
vidanay··on Everything is rising at a scary rate: Why car, home insurance costs are surging
They buy increasingly complex and expensive vehicles because there is no option in a significant portion of the world for a simple, functional, economic car.
vidanay··on Bad Therapy: why kids aren't growing up
I'm 52 years old and every time I go to the doctor they ask me the "Do you feel safe at home?" "Have you been depressed?" etc, etc questions.
vidanay··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
Maybe? My paycheck direct deposit didn't show up until almost 7am. Normally it hits right at midnight.

vidanay··on 'Zombie Fires' burning at an alarming rate in Canada
I suspect we will have smoke/haze again this year (Illinois).

The respect that American veterans and servicemen receive is insanely shallow, in both public and institutional support.

The lawsuits and settlement budgets were all figured in to their anticipated costs to make this change.
vidanay··on Sudo for Windows
I'm not even sure Win11 is on my company roadmap, much less anything cutting edge like an insiders release. Windows 10 Enterprise compatibility is pretty much required for widespread adoption of Sudo for Windows.

Meiosis or Mitosis?
vidanay··on Why buying tickets to a game has become so unaffordable
Is there a professional sports league anywhere that is not the same?
vidanay··on Remote work morphs into elite status symbol for wealthy, college-educated
And yet so many people practically worship the concept of elite athletes, or elite actors, or elite musicians.
vidanay··on Getting fitter can reduce prostate cancer risk by 35%, study finds
I'm almost certain that scheduled meals rose to prominence with the industrial revolution (aka, "clocking in and out".)
